Sad News (1 Viewer)

Very sad news. As it is for any death like this of any person, not just an NFL player. Especially so with a young person.

Condolences to his family and friends and team mates.

Please be cool in this thread and show some respect.

From ProFootballTalk.com

A league source tells us that the current talk in team circles is that Broncos cornerback Darrent Williams expired in the lap of receiver Javon Walker after being shot early Monday morning in a limousine.

Williams, we're told, expired instantly. Also in the limousine were linebacker D.J. Williams and receiver Brandon Marshall. Two others who were riding in the vehicle with the Broncos players were shot, but Walker, D.J. Williams, and Marshall were not injured.

Initially, it was feared that Walker also had been shot, but it was determined that the blood on his clothing was from Williams. (We really couldn't think of a more delicate way to report that specific fact, and we continue to feel nauseous about the entire ordeal. We've heard good things about Darrent Williams from members of the media, and our thoughts are with his family.)

We're told that local police have strong leads as to the suspects, and that arrests are expected to come sooner rather than later. Apparently, the bullets were fired by a group of men with whom the Broncos players had squabbled at a New Year's Eve party hosted by one or more members of the Denver Nuggets.

What kind of squabble needs to be settled with gunfire and murder? If you have a problem with someone either talk it over, walk away or duke it out with your fists. There are some really messed up people in this world.

This could get even uglier depending on which "Nuggets player(s)" happened to be hosting the party.

http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2007/foot...ex.html?cnn=yes

"The club identified by police advertised a New Year's Eve event celebrating the birthday of Denver Nuggets basketball player Kenyon Martin. The Nuggets canceled practice Monday."

===

"Players and coaches didn't have to report to work Monday but about 20 of them gathered at team headquarters to console each other, including receiver Javon Walker, who was in the limo when Williams was killed, according to several Denver media organizations.

Walker, who declined to speak with reporters, appeared to have blood spattered across his shirt when he arrived at the Broncos' facilities."

It's messed up, but pro athletes have to start living somewhat sheltered lives. Night clubs are dangerous places in major cities these days.... they attract "undesirables". Rent a small restarant, have a party, have plenty of security at the door. Sad, but it's reality these days. These gun toting thugs are jealous, and resent any "big shots" like pro athletes invading their turf.

Back in the days of Capone, it WAS different. People who hung around criminals could get shot. These guys weren't hanging around with criminals.... it was a freakin New Years eve party. Flash some money, or drive up in a Hummer limo is enough to set these gangs off these days. Sad....

You don't Represent with a good talk.

Still don't have words for this tragedy, I'm surprised it has hit me this hard. I've been around the block a few times and I have seen it happen to people in my time overseas with the Army, I feel just as bad about this one...

Words simply cannot express how much this news sickens me deep down inside. As a loyal Broncos fan I marvel at how a good guy like Darrent dies so senselessly. Every time I saw him on a T.V. he was always smiling ear to ear. This news knocked the air right out of me. I can only pray for his family.

RIP little guy.

Wow, shocking news this morning. I doubt this was a random act of violence. He must've done something to someone to piss someone off. This just goes to show you how we may know everything about a player on the field, but off it - we have no clue.
You're right we have no clue, so don't imply he must have done something to piss someone off.
You're right. For all we know he wasn't the target and he just happened to be at the wrong place at the wrong time. My first reaction to this was a negative notion and I apologize.
Williams was a good kid, we're from the same area and I watch him play in high school (O.D. Wyatt). He never got into trouble even when some of the other kids were. He kept his nose clean and was plannin on return home to build a community center and to talk to kids about gang violence. This is very sad.RIP Will

Very true, but that way of settling arguments has been done since the 80s. When the 90s hit everything changed in regards to arguments and how they ended. No one is ever safe at these parties because anything can set guys off now whether it's stepping on their shoes, spilling a drink, accidental bump, etc.

Remember all those threads that are started because players don't have a driver/Limo and get caught DUI? Well these guys go out and take care of business, making it as safe as possible and now what?

I hate to beat a dead horse but being at a club with gang-bangers at 3am is not "making it safe as possible."

You are beating a dead horse, and I don't think you hate doing it. He was at a birthday party that was thrown at a club for an NBA player. There were athletes there that played basketball and football, and evidentally some thugs were there in attendance as well. Also he was shot on a street in a limo in a good part of downtown, and this happened around 2:30 am.

since when is someone not entitled to hang out where they want to? they have no control over who else is there, and after all... it's new years eve. no one likes leaving a party and bouncing around on the busiest club night of the year (in any city). turning this around as if him being in the company of a bunch of criminals (if indeed, the guilty were at Kenyon's party) was A) a choice, B) his fault, or C) avoidable is pretty naive and ignorant. you can't tell a criminal by the way they dress. chances are pretty good he had no idea who the other guests were at the party before the altercation took place. that's like blaming a rape victim for wearing a short skirt.

Thats some good news.

I hope that the investigators are smarter than the journalists though.

"Police say the manner in which the bullets were sprayed were typical of an intentional act to hurt someone, as they were shot at roughly at head level."

Ya think? Trying to hurt someone....at head level.....sounds like Murder in the 1st degree to me.

Stereotypes make things easy, don't they? Young + black + out late + shot = being with gang-bangersNo thought required.

I hope that this Brian Hicks and the South Aurora Bloods will be wiped from the face of the earth, by an angry mob of Broncos fans...Well not really, but this must be sorted out before more people is hurt

Yeah, opposed to those shots that are fired not at head level which are typical of an act just to scare someone...? Ah, shooting bullets from a gun in the general direction of any person smacks of intent to injure.

Police have issued an APB for Colo. license plate 665 OBS. 9NEWS has learned the 1998 white Chevy Tahoe believed to be involved in the shooting death of Darrent Williams is registered to Brian Hicks. Hicks, a self-professed gang member, is currently in jail on attempted murder charges.

It's beginning to sound like it was a crips member who has already fled to California.IMO all gang bangers can die.

Wishing death on anyone is classless. Come on. Remember that Amish schoolhouse that was attacked and those kids ended up dead? You know what the father of one of the kids did afterwards? He gathered them all together to forgive and pray for the man who did it. I think we can learn a lot from that. Hatred gets you no where.

I've had two family members and a friend killed because of gang member initiation crap.Good for him, but I've had enough.

Either way, this isn't the place to discuss it.

So you would be happy if every self-proclaimed gang member died?

I agree with rascal here, don't think praying is gonna do much good with these kind of people. Religion is the biggest evil of all IMO, but thats a whole other thread. Tag 'em and bag ' em sounds appropiate to me

Let's leave that discussion for a different thread guys, no need to discuss it here.

Sorry if you are offended by my comments, but let's leave this thread dedicated to D-will.

there's some serious ignorance purveying in this thread. as if gang violence isn't at least partially attributed to a lack of alternatives. yea, kill 'em all. good one.

Darrent Williams sounds like he was one of the good guys. What a tragedy.

Bogarts don't care if you make a million dollars or are on welfare. If they feel disrespected at a club, they might just fire on your ride.

It's a new culture these days.

Three alleged gang members have been identified as suspects in the fatal shooting of Denver Broncos player Darrent Williams, and Denver police were searching for them late Thursday, according to a police source.

The names of the gang members and what connection they may have had to Monday's shooting were not revealed.

Denver police spokeswoman Virginia Quiñones said late Thursday she could not verify that suspects have been identified in the case.

Williams, a starting cornerback for the Broncos, was shot to death early New Year's Day after leaving a nightclub party in a stretch limousine with several others. The shots were fired from a white sport utility vehicle that had pulled alongside the limo, witnesses said.

Earlier Thursday, police found an SUV they had been searching for in connection with the case.

A passerby reported that the Chevrolet Tahoe sought by detectives was parked at Himalaya Road near 38th Avenue in Green Valley Ranch, a neighborhood near Denver International Airport.

Painted dark gray

The SUV, with license-plate number 665-OBS, had been painted dark gray, except for its top, which was left white. Police said an effort was made to disguise the Tahoe's rear license plate with paint, but the front plate remained unaltered.

Police are investigating whether the Tahoe was used in the shooting but had not made a final determination, said Denver police spokesman Sonny Jackson. He said officers were checking the car for evidence.

"It's an act of desperation to abandon a vehicle in the middle of nowhere," Jackson said. "It raises questions."

The SUV is registered to Brian Kenneth Hicks, according to police sources. Hicks, 28, is being held in jail on charges that he tried to kill two women outside a nightclub in 2005, although neither woman was injured in the shooting attack, and on a separate charge of intending to distribute 8.8

The SUV police were seeking in connection with the Darrent Williams murder had been inexpertly painted a dark color with the exception of its roof. It was found abandoned early Jan. 4, 2007. (9News)pounds of cocaine.

One of the women Hicks is accused of shooting at in 2005, Kalonniann Clark, was shot to death during a home-invasion robbery on Dec. 6. No arrests have been made.

Hicks was behind bars at the time Clark was killed, as well as when Williams was shot.

Hicks' wife, Kimaya James, was arrested two days before Clark was killed on allegations that she threatened Clark if she testified against Hicks at his attempted-murder trial.

When contacted at her home Thursday, James declined to talk about who might have been driving her husband's Tahoe, saying to do so wouldn't be "doing any good."

"I ask people to pray for us," James said. "We are victims in all of this, too."

Status and influence

Denver prosecutor David Karpel on Wednesday identified Hicks as a member of the "Tre Tre Crip" gang.

The Rev. Leon Kelly, who works with youths in danger of joining gangs and is considered an expert on Denver gang activity, said that the fact that Hicks is accused of intending to distribute 8.8 pounds of cocaine is an indicator that he had gained status and influence within the gang.

"Dealing that much weight in drugs gives you a lot of clout," Kelly said. "That's a lot of flake."

Hicks' SUV was taken to the Denver Sheriff's Department Vehicle Impound Facility on the 5200 block of Columbine Street.

Someone fired numerous bullets into the limo, striking Williams and two other occupants, at Speer Boulevard and West 11th Avenue, minutes after they left the Shelter nightclub at 1037 Broadway early Monday.

Williams died of a gunshot wound to the neck, according to the Denver Coroner's Office. The two other victims, Nicole Reindl and Brandon Flowers, were treated for injuries and released from the hospital.

Williams was celebrating Denver Nuggets forward Kenyon Martin's birthday and New Year's Eve during the Shelter's Safari Party when there was a dispute between two groups of people at the club, according to police and various witnesses.

One person at the party who left before any trouble broke out said she was later told by others who stayed that a group of Williams' friends from Fort Worth, Texas, appeared to flash gang signs at the club and another group took offense.

Police did not confirm that account.

I know I shouldn't expect much from people that think they can solve their problems with guns, but are they really this stupid?

It was good enough of a job to enable them to drive it DIA without getting noticed.

They needed some time and to ditch it quick, and with the killing be such a major news story, they knew everybody would be looking for it.

Probably left the plate on becuase not having a plate would also draw attention to it.

It seems like night clubs and NFL/NBA players do not mix well.
