Salmon (1 Viewer)

I have 65 lbs of salmon in my freezer from fishing in Alaska this summer.

Just wanted you guys to know.
I hate you. I want to do this so badly JUST to get a ton of salmon. As much as we eat, I think the trip might pay for itself in Salmon.
It's really a blast. I went this summer for the 2nd straight year. My buddies and I are making it an annual trip.

If you go it is REALLY important to make sure you get the timing right. You really don't want to miss the good runs. The King runs have been horrible the past two years, but we loaded up on Sockeye this year. Between the three of us, in three days, we caught 55 sockeyes at an average of about 9 lbs each. Some were bigger and some were smaller. We got about 3-4 lbs. of meat off each one.

It is a great trip and if you have a couple guys that would be into it, I can't recommend it enough. And it's not all that expensive considering what you get out of it.
do you strap them to your car hood for the ride home?

We book our trip through some folks who clean and pack the salmon for us. We use one of their guides for one day so he can show us technique and fill us in on the good spots on the river. At the end of each day we take our fish to their place and they clean, filet, and flash freeze them for us. They pack them up in 49 lb "freeze" boxes and we just pick them up on our way to the airport and check them like luggage. They are always still frozen solid when we get home.

Out of curiosity, what is the timing for these types of trips? I'd look into getting some buddies together for it if I know when to go.

The best month is July, but it depends on what you want to fish.

There is a King run at the beginning of July and mid-late July. There is a Sockeye run around the same times, but they are a little different. The best Sockeye run is late July. The Silvers (Coho) run in September, but your chances of catching a King are pretty much nil at that point. But, the King fishing has been so bad the past couple years it hasn't mattered anyway.

So, we have decided to focus on Reds (Sockeye) until the King runs improve. The Reds are a blast to catch, and they are pretty prolific if you time it right. We were there around July 25 this year and it was decent. Our guide suggested, based on the tides, etc., that next summer July 17-21 would be a great time for Reds. So we are booked for that time next year.

It is VERY important though to talk to someone about a good time to go. Don't just plan to go during the summer. There are specific weeks for each type of salmon that is better than the others, and it sucks if you hit a bad time. We did that our first year and learned our lesson.

I have some cedar lying around from a project. I could cut to size and plane down if anyone wants a plank. Just send me your address and paypal me enough to cover shipping and I can send it out.
