Probably a POS mass-produced sword, I would assume a "samurai" would be using a good sword that isn't going to break like that.

Swung correctly, as a samurai would, it won't break.

Correct strategy would be to wear down the bear with slash & run techniques, plus slashing & dodge when being charged. Couple good cuts on the paw would slow it down a bit, and then you could go to work at the shoulder muscles and the side. Basically continuing to slash aiming for areas to cripple the bear, to take out it's advantages in height, speed and (potentially) reach. The samurai is naturally quicker and more nimble, and obviously more intelligent. That is enough advantages for a trained warrior to survive against a grizzly. The average guy with no training would likely be dead, may break the sword, etc., but a trained warrior should win this match.

Plus a samurai could chuck rocks at the bear, the bear would not be able to throw rocks back very accurately, if at all.

Grizzly still takes the Samurai with him, at worst. Samurai gets one good lick in before getting buried, better be a good one.
