San Diego Chargers Blacked Out (1 Viewer)

What are we going to do now? The Chargers, Southern California's only NFL team, were unable to sell out the home opener against Jacksonville on Sunday forcing the NFL to black out the game from the local San Diego television market.

Well, I guess I can get some extra beach time in this weekend. Its tough down here with the Padres fading and the Chargers drama.

Then again. We don't really care. I'd call us fair weather fans, but with the San Diego climate that would be dedication. We are more like, tell me when we are good and I will tell you the next time we are going to be 'The Kaeding Kook'.

Is this step 1 to L.A. or maybe step 2 or 3?

Black Out Reasons

1. We didn't improve. Running back, ok, maybe, but the other issues of defensive line and a safety were not upgraded. Big minus at left tackle too.

2. Norv Turner seems to start the season stuck in SoCal traffic, except for the part where the Starbucks kicks in, you loose your mind, freak out and start yelling at anyone and everyone. Not marvelous Norval.

Check out the rest here http://sportales.com/baseball/san-diego-ch...rs-blacked-out/

I gotta say I have no sympathy for complaining Chargers fans around here regarding the blackout. "why don;t they buy the tickets themselves? Why doesn't CBS buy them? Why doesn't the Tooth Fairy buy them? GO TO THE GAME!!!!! I would if I wasn't working and it wouldn't interfere with the Redskins game. Love it when the schedule works out that way. Can't wait for the Monday Night Denver game.

The NFL needs to ease up on the blackout rules with a recession going on and so many people unemployed and underemployed. Blackouts are not working to put fans in seats. "Let them eat cake" didn't work either.

I'm guessing that having a guy like AJ Smith, who puts personal grudges ahead of what's best for the team, probably doesn't make fans real happy about dishing out money for game tickets. When they see their team lose because they have a receiving fleet full of second and third class receivers, while a top ten guy like Jackson won't get offered anything close to fair market value, it doesn't inspire fans to dip into their wallets and support this guy. (and yes I know he wouldn't have been eligible to play against KC anyway)

Could it have anything to do with them playing Jacksonville? Good or not, they are not the most exciting team to watch.

You might want to go back to the music threads. You are clearly out of your depth here.

How far would you have to drive to catch the game at a bar?
Tijuana would be the closest, assuming the game is on there. (I don't know if it is.) That's about 45 miles from me. The next closest would be El Centro (125 miles) or Santa Barbara (205 miles).

Last time the Chargers were blacked out was 2004 and it did extend into Mexico too. Not that I would go to Tijuana to watch a game anyways. I would rather attend a Raiders game in Oakland. I might get stabbed but at least I won't get my head chopped off.

I agree. What a terrible way to treat fans. Not only that, but it does some pretty heavy damage to the local CBS station who is going to lose out on all that advertising revenue now that people aren't going to be watching.

Can't you still catch the game in San Diego off of Sunday Ticket if you have it?
:jawdrop:
What about outside the SD market? Great so SoCal potheads over-leverage themselves with Interest only mortgages and can't afford nfl tickets anymore. Now, the rest of the country has to suffer and cant see them get beat, even with the ticket. Boo

With this new labor agreement looming, players and owners are going to have to anticipate lower revenues. I go to Bills games, which might be the lowest priced tickets in the NFL, and it will still cost me in excess of $100 to go solo. I cannot comprehend how a person can take his family to a Jets, Giants, Patriots, etc. game.

Maybe next time you can use a wider brush stroke to cover all of California.

:shock:I guess if they were playing the Jets and their high powered offense it would have been a sellout.
LOL...I never said that. Just that it the Jags are not classified as an "exciting team"...I think few outside of Jacksonville would argue with that. With that said, if the Jets came to town, it would be a massive sellout. Tickets are always hard to find in SD when the Jets are there and more importantly, you don't think SD fans will come to see Tomlinson's first game back?

"The rest of the country" can see the game just fine. Blackouts only affect broadcasters whose broadcast area includes anything within 75 miles of the stadium.

Don't see why people are complaining about the NFL. If it's not sold out, tickets should be cheap. Go to the game. If you can't even get 70K people out of the San Diego area to go, the game should be blacked out. Recession or not, there's far more than 70K that could afford it.

Easy there Icon, Chargers are not going to lose to Cracksonville. SoCal potheads are the ones that can still afford the mortgages here with their collectives collecting. Get it straight. We over-leveraged ourselves 'cause we don't like to shovel snow. Oh yeah, and the California girls!

with the price you have to pay ST & the $$$ the NFL gets from Direct TV thats is ridiculous

Wow are SD fans pathetic. You have a winning team and you can't sell out the game. Lions have been losers forever and we only started black outs the last couple years at Ford Field.

Not too bright. Angels and dodgers have great attendance. SD fans are just bad and the commute from la and Orange county can be brutal.

Lotsa :lmao: in this thread...

San Diego has never support its sports teams. I lived there for 8 years and tickets to every game are usually available up to game time. The Clippers in the NBA left years ago. The Chargers will be in another city within 5 years. Spanos family isn't going to spend the money if they don't have too. If you go to the bars they are packed. I guess today they will have to watch other NFL teams play. Dont' get me wrong there are alot of other things to do in San Diego but support your team. The Chargers fans will come out when they make the playoffs it happens every year.

Yep, how many millions of families are stuck with upside-down mortgages and/or have at least one of two bread-winners unemployed or under-employed? Yet they are "bad fans" because they won't pony-up hundreds of dollars for approximately 3-4 hours of entertainment?! Lots of single/divorced men without kids (or who are behind in their child support payments) trolling around this thread I see. Maybe I've overly sensitive to this issue because my Vikings have seemingly been threatening to move without a new stadium since pretty-much the old Met Stadium. Excuse me...a publicly-financed new stadium.

If it were up to me, public money for professional sports wouldn't be an option. Loans maybe...but no free handouts. How come it's meddling and overstepping the government's bounds (if you're a Republican/Conservative) to bail out Big Auto in Detroit or have public health care options, but when the team you're wearing a jersey of this morning says they need a few hundred million for __________ or they'll move to North Haverbrook from The Simpsons, the same folks scream and holler about their government stepping up and getting things done? The hypocrisy is astounding!

I grew up a Packer fan so Black outs and empty seats aren't a concern and haven't been and won't be since the waiting list is 70K strong for tix.

But, I moved to S.D. in the 90's. I couldn't believe you could go to an NFL game day of and buy a ticket. WOW!! The NFL has to change the black out rule at least for this year. Revisit it again next year if you have to. The tickets have to be bought by someone. Hell in Minnesota they bought tickets last year to sell games out and get on TV. That was with Queen Diva on there team. Well it is Minn. Maybe the worst fans in sports.

Wow, I never knew that. Extremely lame. A lot of local bars have got to be pissed about that.

:goodposting: Wifey and I and our 6 month old are heading over to the Q in an hour. Home opener, 74 degrees, the team has won the division 5 of the last 6 years, Pro Bowl QB, new Rolls Royce at RB, why not attend the best party in SoCal today?LET ME SEE YOUR LIGHTNING BOLTS!

There's a lot of disdain in general by San Diego citizens toward the Spanos family. They have zero involvement with the community and are strong arming the city into a stadium that the city can't afford. EDIT: I had TERRIBLE math to support my argument. So ignore what I had to say =)

A new stadium, unfortunately, will just be that many more seats that need to sell out before a black out is lifted.

The Patriots / Jets game on in its place will be interesting enough. I just wonder what game we'll get when the Cardinals come to town in two weeks and we're blacked out again.

At least as of a couple years ago, the Jags sold tickets in the nosebleeds for $20 a pop. :(

The NFL is ripe for the fall.

It's going to be great when they comeback from the work stoppage and half the games are blacked out. These draconian black outs don't get people to the games, they just deprive the poor and middle class people who can't afford to go anyway. The NFL takes it's fans for granted, just ask MLB how that worked out for them.

Maybe the biggest difference is that there are other things to do in San Diego on a fall/winter Sunday afternoon.

There are other things to do in every NFL city... that is a pathetic excuse.I think it's rather pathetic that the Chargers don't have enough local fans to sell out 8 regular season home games. The population of San Diego county is over 3M. If I lived there I'd go to every game. That said, the blackout policy is awful given the current economic climate.
