San Diego Padres chase the 2010 NL West Crown (1 Viewer)

13-8, 1st place in the NL West. Chase Headley appears to be turning the corner and becoming the player we thought he was as one of the top prospects in all of minor league baseball. Venable is showing flashes of speed and power, while playing outstanding defense. Blanks is a work in progress, not exactly making everyone comfortable for life after Adrian.

Pitching is OUTSTANDING, even with CY going down. Latos still too raw, but Correia is proving last year was no fluke. Richard is a solid 4th starter, and Garland finally looked like the puzzle piece he was supposed to be yesterday. With Stauffer and LeBlanc looking unhittable in spots, and Simon dominating in the minors, the arms are a big strength.

It's ON :bye:

And you didn't even mention the strength of this team: The Bullpen.Gregerson / Adams / Bell are an incredible trio....And Mujica has been excellent too.

Yep - Russell has been great as well. And there are a couple of relief arms in the minors who have looked good early.I love Heath, but I won't cry when he's spun for a CF prospect or more minor league arms. Gregerson will be a great 8th inning guy and Adams > Bell, IMO.

Someone explain to me how Will Venable has a job in the major leagues.... much less as the LEADOFF HITTER for this team!

He sucks. A lot. I don't think I've ever seen him get a hit.

One of life's little mysteries.

He hit 12 HRs in 293 ABs as a rookie last year. He's struggled early this year, but has 4 HRs and 12 steals, while playing outstanding defense. He's probably the best athlete in the Padres organization - he was All Ivy League baseball and basketball at Princeton.

Great.He's terrible.

Who is this guy doing your radio broadcast (XPRS)? He's awful. I almost had to turn on the WGN feed to listen to this game.

So what's the plan for Latos down the stretch and possibly the playoffs?
He may be pushed back for a day between starts, or even skipped in the rotation once depending on how tight the race is, but otherwise he'll be out there for his starts. He will not be shut down.Playoffs are an interesting call. Mat has clearly been the Padre ace this year, but he's also their youngest starter, so I don't know if Black will start him in Game 1 or give that start to Garland and let Latos pitch games 2 and 5.

Padres playing great ball right now, a 7-3 road trip extending the lead over the gigantes from 2.5 to 5.5. Ludwick and Tejada fitting in well (Miguel much better at SS than anticipated) and Will Venable making gold glove caliber catches on a nightly basis while getting close to a 15 HR, 30 SB season.

Would be a damn shame if we draw the Phils and the Hamels, Halladay, Oswalt trio in round 1.

If you only knew. I got my authentic Padre Home White Jersey changed from Prior to Venable less than 2 weeks ago. He's 2-30 since then, and the Pads haven't won a single game.

Saw today that no team has ever had a 10 game losing streak and made the playoffs in the same season.

I think I read there have been two - one of which was the '51 Giants. The other I don't remember the braves I think.

You are right. I was misremembering what I read. The 82 Braves were the last team to lose 10 in a row and make the playoffs. Nobody had lost 11 in a row and made the playoffs. Good thing SD won!

:goodposting: Garland struggles early so hopefully he can get through the first 2-3 unscathed and the Pads can win the 1st, putting a lot of pressure on SF.

Garland blows. He blasts Bud Black in the paper during the losing streak despite not pitching well in recent starts, and tonight he gives up 6 on 3 long balls in the biggest park in baseball.

 :bag: :)

Had to pop in here - got 920 reasons to want the Padres to go all the way :lmao:

(got 'em at 45-1 in Vega$ on June 30 (!) )

And I like 'em anyhow

NOW the Cubs decide they want to play good baseball. :pickle:

I badly wanted to see this team in the playoffs. It's a great story. The Padres looked like they were playing with a noose around their necks tonight. Gonzo booted the most routine grounder you've ever seen and the pitches to Soriano were too fat.

And how about that Ryan Ludwick?

Going into today he has an OPS of .647 and a WAR of -1.1 as a Padre.

Probably cost them a post season appearance.

Big Z is rolling, so I wasn't surprised he shut down the Pads on Monday. But Dempster has been awful lately. There's no excuse for not beating his ###. Complete choke job.

Gonzo has absolutely disappeared lately - his glove has been as awful as his stick. Maybe he gets red-hot for weekend.

Pads win today and the pressure shifts back to SF. Ludwick is due for a 3 hit day. Lineup should be all righties except for Adrian and Venable.

I know if someone had offered me as a Giants fan 90 wins at the start of spring training, I would have taken it in an instant. Who'd have thought it would take 91 to win the West?

The Padres have some definite positives coming out of the season. Good young starters, a solid bullpen and another year of Gonzalez. They need Headley, Venable or someone to take a leap offensively. There's not a lot of immediate help in the minors and free agent hitters will think twice about Petco.

100% accurate Eephus. The Pads everyday lineup is an absolute mess. There are really only 3 building blocks - Adrian, Venable, and Headley - and Adrian is likely gone either soon or in the near future.Eckstein is finished, I think the Pads would like to resign Tejada if he'll take less money and move to 2B. That leaves a hole at SS and holes in 2 OF spots. Decent chance that they bring Ludwick back for 1 more year, and Blanks should be back and 100%. His growth and bat are essential if the Pads are going to be competitive in '11; he's probably the biggest disappoint in a year of overachievement. No help at all in the high minors. All the talent in at lower levels. Thanks Kevin Towers.Saving grace is the outstanding pitching both in the bullpen and amongst the starters. Latos, Richard, Stauffer, and Luebke is about as good as it gets for 4 guys making barely above the minimum. Bell should be dealt; there are several arms ready to step up their roles. Adams, Gregerson, and Frieri can all close at a fraction of Bell's cost. Oh well - it was a fun run.
