Santonio Holmes Traded to Jets (1 Viewer)

It was very well known that Holmes was not going to be resigned by the Steelers. He wanted too much money and now reports are coming out that he was not liked much in the locker room. Plax was a bone head at time also, but difference between him and Holmes is that Plax was very well liked by his teammates. Holmes has so much talent but has an empty head.
Hasen't it been more widely reported that Ben is not liked by his teammates?
No
Is that why Hines Ward publicly called him Ben last year?
that really doesn't seem so damning.

Hasen't it been more widely reported that Ben is not liked by his teammates?
No
Is that why Hines Ward publicly called him Ben last year?Or how about:

The following quotes are from NFL scouts, coaches and front-office personnel, speaking on the condition of anonymity.

• "(Steelers QB) Ben Roethlisberger is not a well-liked teammate. He's arrogant and lazy. It's not a nice mixture in a steel city known for its toughness."
If you're gonna list the negative things said about Ben regarding how he is as a teammate, I am sure you'll list the positives that have been said, right? Right? I mean, it's only fair, and you won't look like an idiot. Here, I'll start you out:"I wasn't a good leader early on, and I wasn't probably the best teammate I should've been the first couple years," said Roethlisberger. "And Charlie helped me, and I think I became a better teammate and friend to a lot of these guys."

Said Steelers DE Brett Keisel: "He's really taken the leadership role and ran with it.

"He's really come along not only on the field but inside the locker room, too."

Big Ben has become particularly close with the offensive linemen who have been frequently pilloried for surrendering 162 sacks of their quarterback in the last 3 1/2 years.

Named a captain the past two seasons, Roethlisberger has made a point of frequently calling and text messaging his teammates throughout the year, loyalty that's come back to him in spades.

"These allegations are just ... they're tough, they're tough on me. But my teammates, knowing that they support me and have my back, that really just means a lot."

"Ben's a #### tough guy," defensive end Brett Keisel told the Post-Gazette. "He's one of the biggest competitors in this locker room.

Ok, feel free to add more. I know you will. Right?
It's a legitimate topic of discussion regarding that Ben might not be that popular amongst him teammates given the assertion that Holmes was shipped off partially due to be a locker room distraction. Why so defensive.Just like I know you'll list all the negative things said about Ben regarding how he is as a bad teammate, I am sure you'll list the negatives that have been said, right? Right? I mean, it's only fair, and you won't look like an idiot. Here, I'll start you out:

"I wasn't a good leader early on and I wasn't the best teammate I could've been the first couple of years. I was invincible; I was Superman. I was probably a little too confident, a little too cocky at times."

"This game is almost like a playoff game," Ward told NBC's Bob Costas. "It's almost a 'must' win. So, I can see some players or some teammates kind of questioning like, 'Well, it's just a concussion. I've played with concussions before. I would go out there and play.' So, it's almost like a 50-50 toss-up in the locker room. You know, should he play, shouldn't he play. It's really hard to say.

"I've been out there dinged up. The following week, got right back out there. You know, Ben practiced all week. . . . To find out that he's still having some headaches and not playing and it came down to doctor's didn't feel that they was gonna clear him. . . . It's hard to say, unless you're the person. . . . I've lied to a couple of doctors saying 'I'm straight, I feel good,' when I knew I'm really not straight. But I don't think guys really about the future when they're playing currently in the NFL. . . .

"Trust me, the players, they wanna go out there because these games, you don't get back. You're never gonna get this Baltimore-Pittsburgh game back."

Bradshaw said he and Roethlisberger do not have a good relationship. His full remarks:

"When I told him to park the motorcycle, he got pissed. Then he had the accident. Ever since then, he doesn't like me, and I'm learning not to like him. And he wants to break all my records and I say 'go for it.' Break them. I really don't care. I've done my job. My job is over and now you have your shot. But in my opinion, he has got to realize who he is. He is an elite athlete in the National Football League. You've got an image problem right now. The best thing to do is not put yourself in that position again. When you're through playing football, you can do whatever you want to do, but right now, stay clean."

Ok, feel free to add more. I know you will. Right?

No, not terribly. But when a WR like Ward calls publicly calls out their QB, it makes me question what is being said privately.

not sure if this was posted already (long thread)...

from a recent kirwan chat (today?)...

Q - what is up with this santonio holmes trade? i get they wanna offload him cuz of character issues, but could they really not manage anything better than a 5th rounder for a guy who was superbowl mvp 2 years ago and has a lot of football ahead of him even if he does have to serve a suspension?

A - Not sure he has a lot of football ahead of him if he can't handle his life outside of the football environment. He has a suspension coming down, probably today, for four games. And what's going to happen with the next one? To me, the Steelers have had enough, but they also see the draft as a place to fix that problem. I wouldn't be surprised if they're looking Demaryius Thomas in the first round.

Q - Mr Kirwan huge steelers fan since the 70s how much input do you think coach Tomlin had in this. And we couldnt get better than 5th rd pick .i guess they really like Mike Wallace thank you

A - The compensation for Holmes fell apart with Holmes' off-field problems. From what I found out, they shopped this guy everywhere. Too much risk for anything better than a fifth. His off-field history goes all the way back to high school. There were teams that wouldn't draft him when he was coming out.

Ward has admitted that he did not know all the facts about Ben leading up to that game. He did not know it was the coaches and doctors who said Ben would not play and admitted to being in the wrong.Bradshaw played in the 70's and early 80's, he is not a teammate of Ben's and is now a media figure trying to get his name in the news sometimes. Bradshaw has very little to do with anything regarding the Steelers organization.

I will say one thing. Mike Tanenbaum needs to take a class on public speaking because watching him on TV or listening to him on the radio would lead one to conclude he's a hair away from being a buffoon. But obviously given the aggressive (and successful) nature with which he's built this roster, he clearly has some chops at his job. I know other people in other walks of life that don't project verbally as well as they should given their professional aptitude, and Mike T REALLY needs to get more comfortable articulating the rationale behind the moves he makes.

Not a fan of Roger at all. So far he looks like nothing more then a new dean of discipline at a public school.
One choice is to be a pot head. Another choice is to make millions of dollars in the NFL.These guys know the deal going into the league. It's not some mean Commissioner picking on them. The "everybody does it" defense sounds like something a child would say. No, everybody DOESN'T do it.
Never said everybody does it but surprisingly a good amount of people do it. I am just tired of people seeing it on the same level as meth or something. Its ridiculous. People can go out and drink year round but god forbid, you got some pot in your system. Either way his fault for being a jackass.Be interesting to see how this team is going to look. Does this put it at Holmes Edwards Cotch?

I would expect that Holmes could get at least a 3rd round pick if not better and this trade is worse than letting him walk because I would expect the Steelers to get a 3rd round compensatory pick in return in that scenario.
The Steelers got a 5th round compensatory pick when 9x Pro Bowler and 6x All-Pro G Alan Faneca signed with the Jets. There is no guarantee the Steelers would have gotten anything better than a 5th round for Holmes, a player that never has made the Pro Bowl and coming off a season with a 4-game suspension and a troubled past.Given Holmes' behavior and lack of common sense there is no guarantee he won't screw up again and face a year long suspension. Better to get something today while the getting is good. We'll miss him on the field but the ownership and many fans had grown tired of his antics. Hopefully it will finally send a message to his former QB: shape up or ship out.

M. Wallace is the biggest winner of this deal. Cotchery/Holmes/Edwards value all takes a huge hit. Just not enough balls there to go around to get excited about any of them. Really upsetting as a Holmes/Cotchery owner.
as a Wallace owner, I'm stoked!especially with Ward aging, Wallace is about to become a major part of this offense..

Yeah, trading away good players really punishes the players.
These guys are all about themselves. When you are traded for a measely 5th round pick after having career season there is definitely a message being sent. Holmes may be too stupid to pick up on it though...

Anything can happen from here on out, and I doubt Holmes would fall into this category . . . but here are some WR that had a 1,200 yard receiving season and no other 1,000 yard receiving season.

Drew Bennett, Marcus Robinson, Germane Crowell, Jeff Graham, Braylon Edwards, Eddie Brown, Pat Studstill, Ben Hawkins, Peerless Price, Koren Robinson, Webster Slaughter, Michael Jackson, Charlie Brown, Tim McGee, Johnny Morris, Troy Brown (1,199)

Tanny

I don't think he's horrible...... As Jets fans we have seen Herm Edwards babble on and on with little substance and no answers and then Eric Mangini mumble a lot of nothing not to mention Terry Bradway who was a complete Goof..... so, I guess we're used to it. And Rex certainly balances things out..

That Hard Knocks show is going to be a roller coaster ride with Rex's walking a line with his mouth.

The message seems to be, "Act like a fool and we'll send you to a contender and hurt the team by getting little in return."

I totally understand where the Steelers are coming from.. Teams get whatever they can for players due to a number of reasons... The Jets got much less than they should have for Johnathan Vilma why? 1) he was injured 2) He didn't fit in their 3/4 defense..... It happens, you reach a point where the player isn't going to be with the team long term anyway so, you get what you can now and MOVE ON allowing the next player to develop.

It's useless with this guy, he just paints the picture the way he wants to paint it. He only sees things his way.

GREEN hype is already reaching epic proportions !!!

And this is before training camp, Hark Knocks, or fat Rex opens his mouth.

The eventual and impending disappointment is going to be fantastic.

Again, I'd like to add:

Where are all of those people that came out of the woodwork asking/saying that the Steelers should get rid of this guy because of his character issues because good character players have always been a trait the Steelers strived for?

They get rid of him, and then they either mock the trade or say nothing. I'm not surprised.

Or claim that the Steelers would not release / trade an integral member of the team, insinuating that SH wasn't an important part of the Steelers O. Because we all know that Santonio Holmes = Cedric Wilson. :lmao:

The message will come next year when Holmes gets about 50% of what hes worth... baring anymore character issues. He would of gotten a bigger contact in Pit than NY; NY owns him NOTHING and thats the point. Now if they traded him Dal or Wash then Holmes would of gotten a huge extension Monday morning... but NY is cheap.

:banned: LINK to the Hype!!!!

Jets fans here are pretty tame overall... There's maybe 5 or six jets fans, if that, all reasonably grounded discussing this while everyone else goes batty....

Overall - Holmes is what at best ranked barely in the top 20 of WR's... He's a rental project and a risk but, an upgrade for this season at WR for NY.... That's all.

I think it's a good risk.... Not a monumental move though overall.

I'm not overly excited but, I'm glad NY made the deal and not New England or any other AFC east team.

I am glad he did not get dealt to New England. I am sure the media would proclaim Bill Belichick a friggin genius again. This board would of went nuts. If they can have multi-page threads when NE trades for Greg Lewis then imagine the hype if they got Holmes.

You mean not your way through Back and Gold colored glasses?Your "my way of the highway" way of looking at things attitude definitely pushed me to polarize my posts so let's reset.

All my initial point intimated was that Ben seems to not be the most loved guy in the locker room either. This can't help.

This leads to the obvious question that if, as many Steeler fans assert, Holmes was traded partially due to being a divisive presence in the locker room, where does that leave the Steelers with Ben?

No, you bring up the game Ben was hurt and what Ward had to say about it, but didn't go on to explain or bring to light what was said after that, which is what Steelfan said. So while I might be looking at it through black and gold glasses, you are looking at it through hate filled black and gold glasses. Just pointing out the hypocrisy on your part.

Right?
Ward has admitted that he did not know all the facts about Ben leading up to that game. He did not know it was the coaches and doctors who said Ben would not play and admitted to being in the wrong.Bradshaw played in the 70's and early 80's, he is not a teammate of Ben's and is now a media figure trying to get his name in the news sometimes. Bradshaw has very little to do with anything regarding the Steelers organization.
It's useless with this guy, he just paints the picture the way he wants to paint it. He only sees things his way.

Nope. You entirely misread me.

If you have to know, most of my wife's family is from right outside Pittsburgh so I've spend some time there over the years and pull for the Steelers as my adopted AFC team. Just because I'm critical of some players on the team and some moves the team makes doesn't mean I hate them. Perhaps in your mind you need to blindly and unquestionly love them or you hate them. There is no middle ground and no room for criticism.

5th for Holmes2 2nds for MarshallYep, we didn't get hozed at all
Marshall has 3 consecutive sEasons of 100+ receptions. He is worth more but probably has more baggage unless there is more about holmes that we don't know. Having said that, steelers still should have gotten more and probably could have had they been more patient.

Tannenbaum added that the Jets were willing to gamble on Holmes because the club feels it has a strong support system in place

haha....the trick is getting to the support system without getting arrested on the way.
