Saw a "feel good" video about a kid with Downs Syndrome (1 Viewer)

TheIronSheik

SUPER ELITE UPPER TIER
I believe he had Downs Syndrome and was the team manager of his high school basketball team. Did it for all 4 years and used to practice taking 3 point shots all of the time. Last game of the year, during his senior year, the team decides to put the kid in to play. Ends up draining like 5 three pointers. It all sounded really heart warming.

Then I saw the video. The other team didn't even try to cover him. And I guess that makes sense. Who wants to be the guy who rejects the Special Ed kid? Your face would be all over the Internet as the biggest d-bag of the current moment. But what's odd is that his team won by like only 6 points. Give that other team credit for taking a loss. I'm guessing it didn't make or break their season. But that said, what if they had needed to win that game?

If you were on that team, and you needed a win to advance to the playoffs, would you smack that ball out of the kid's hands? I'm not sure I could do it and feel good about myself.

My guess is if it really meant something for playoffs or whatever it wouldn't have happened.

But hey if it's a must win for my team and I am defending him he will not get an uncontested shot. I don't mind letting him sink one at the end but I wouldn't let him change the outcome if it meant something.

I would knock it through his hands into his face and do Brandon Mebane's sack dance.

This kid is going to get to feel good about sports stuff for his whole life. People will let him win at backyard basketball, football, soccer, whatever. This may be my only chance to reject a shot into someone's face. I think I deserve it.

I don`t know why more high schools don`t band together and form a league of special edders. Even if they attend different schools. Give them a chance to compete against each other and to feel like they are part of a team. I don`t like throwing them out there like a token or sideshow and having the other team stop trying.

maybe they could form an Olympics of some sort too.

On a high school team level. So they could represent a school and earn a letter and varsity jacket.

Well, when you say it like that, it sounds really degrading.

Maybe at halftime of the game have the special kids have a free throw contest or a 1 on 1 game??

We do something called Challenger League here via Pop Warner. They play flag football even kids in wheelchairs. It's a very neat program and is definitely full of feel good.

Exactly, let them actually compete against each other without a team having to step aside.

I assume this is the clip: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=THORAQgNqco

Lots of wannabe tough guys here, but the reaction of his teammates says all you need to know that it was a terrific thing. No one is going to remember the score of that meaningless game, but the kid and all the people there will have a long lasting memory.

If it was a nothing game who cares? Let him hit all the 3s he wants, celebrate with him after every one, all good. All for it, count me in. The question was if it was a meaningful game and that is a different story.

Exactly. I don't think anyone was being a tough guy in a serious manner. If it's a meaningless game, which I assume it was, this is the correct call every time.

Like NCC said, the question I asked was if it was not a meaningless game, would you be the guy that rejected his shot or stole the ball from him?

And although I would defend him I would feel bad for him while doing it. But then I hope no coach would do that to a kid. Usually these things get planned a bit before hand between the coaches and everyone is in on it. That wouldn't happen at a game say that meant a playoff berth.

Yeah, I'd like to think any coach worth his salt wouldn't put either team in an uncomfortable situation like that. If a coach did, that wouldn't end well either way.

Most schools, the special ed basketball team is called "Varsity."

Sure, but if you want to get him some game time, and you just happen to be playing three teams that might be vying for the playoffs as your last three games, who knows. Again, I'm not saying it would ever happen. The question was more about IF it did, how would you handle it.

Well again this comes down to planning. The coaches get together before the game and the guy who wants to get the kid in says "you know if it gets out of hand could my guy come in and get a shot?"
