Any Given Sunday Baby!!

Simple answer, because real NFL teams have defenses that also determine the outcomes of games. As a fantasy player, you cant control how many points your opponent puts up.

How many times have you seen someone put up a ton of points during the season, but because he "allowed" a ton of points, his record stinks? A lot of times I'm sure.
I beg to differ...slightly. In my IDP league, we subtract Team A's defensive total from Team B's Total output (offense plus IDP total) and vice versa so that your defense can actually impact the game. We actually had a team in 2004 win the championship behind a powerful defense that took away between 60-70 pts a week from his opponents.
That really doesn't change anything. You're just double-counting your IDP scores. Right now your point totals look like: Team A's offense + Team A's defense - Team B's defense vs. Team B's offense + Team B's defense - Team A's defense

Just move the two minus signs over and you get Team A's O + Team A's D + Team A's D vs. Team B's O + Team B's D + Team B's D.

This is not like a real NFL defense, where there's actual control over the opposing team's offensive output.
maybe I misread his post, but I think he is saying Team A offense - Team B Defense vs Team B offense - Team A defense. So no double counting of IDP, and while you aren't controlling an opposing teams offensive output directly, if the IDP scoring is robust enough, building a strong set of IDPs could reduce the offensive scoring quite a bit. I've never seen this scoring, but I am intrigued.
That is an unbelievable idea, I now officially want to play in a league like that.

I don't have time to go into it now, but it's flawed, particularly if you do anything with total points. We did it for one season and immediately removed it.
