Schilling with Serious Shoulder injury? (1 Viewer)

This just in..

Schilling could be done for year?

From Rotoworld:

The Boston Herald reports that Curt Schilling may need surgery for what's likely either a rotator cuff or labrum injury.

Schilling is done after this year, so we don't see why he'd undergo surgery. Unless he's reconsidering and wants to extend his career beyond 2008, then he'll have to try to pitch through the problem. According to the Herald, the Red Sox are already exploring the possibility of voiding Schilling's contract. They could decide to make a run at Kyle Lohse or take a flier on Bartolo Colon or Freddy Garcia if they don't think Schilling will make it back.

Wow. Thats a huge hit although they do have the depth with Buchholz & Lester
Yeah I was thinking it just opens the door for Buchholz in the rotation (or at least long relief). I dont see why they would bother with any of the old s***bags named in the article.

Bucholz is probably better than Schilling at this point anyway
I doubt it. Hes a young pitcher and just like Hughes, Chamberlain, & Kennedy he will have his ups and downs. Schilling was pretty solid towards the end of last year. Plus dont forget Buchholz I assume would be on an innings pitch limit.

This could have gone in the Unofficial Red Sox Dynasty march thread. This is big news.

Can some of the Sox fans on this thread come in here and tell us how Schill wasn't part of the plan/not important/no longer any good. I can't wait to hear the spin.

He was 9-8 last year in 24 starts. His K/IP was at .668 a huge drop from his career average of .955It's not great news that one of your penciled in starters for next year is having issues, but it's not like he was in the running for Cy Young the last 3 years. All indications are that this would be his last year. Not sure what else to say about that

Thank you.

I think its no big thing and you know where I stand DC. It was a piece of depth, but its no like he was much more than a 5 and fly these days anyway. A non factor and probably addition by subtraction, because the psychological crutch would be to lean on him in a big game, but he's washed up anyway.

Incidentally, whats their rationale for voiding him? They had him last year and presumbly gave(or should have) given him a physical.

Don't forget the 3-0 playoff record with a 3.00 ERA and 1.17 WHIP.
Exactly. :D The playoffs is where this guy's value becomes apparent. This will definitely hurt the Red Sox title hopes.

Last time I checked you need to GET to the playoff's before this becomes relevant.Like I said, it's not great when you potentially lose one of your starters before the season starts. But, this isn't exactly a death blow to the Sox title hopes. Too bad someone snagged away Matt Clement already :mellow:There are arms still available out there. I still much prefer the Red Sox rotation to the Yankees.

I continuously fail to see what's so great about Jon Lester. Somebody please enlighten me.
While I tend to agree that perhaps Lester's perceived potential is higher than what may be realistic.....I do think Lester could be a quality starter. He's only 23 still and just 2 years removed from cancer. And as recently as '05, he was a dominant minor league pitcher. Sure, minor league dominance doesn't necessarily equate into a quality big leaguer, but when you're overpowering guys at 20-21 years old, that usually bodes well for future success. And he's left handed. I think Lester is Andy Petittesque. Not Johan Santanaesque. But, I'd like to see what he can do.

2 years ago he was the Sox second ranked prospect, more highly regarded than Pedroia, Papelbon, Ellsbury, and Buchholz. Then he got cancer. It's hard to see beyond the post-cancer Lester. But if he approaches his potential, he is indeed a special pitcher.
