Fernando Rodney (RHP, DET)

With the recent ineffectiveness of Todd Jones and the injury to Joel Zumaya, the Tigers have turned to Rodney as their closer. This is a surprise move, considering all the shoulder problems he has had this spring and into the 2008 season. Factor in a 5.17 ERA and this looks like a head scratcher. From a health perspective, however, Rodney appears to have put his shoulder issues behind him. The Tigers have not used him in back-to-back situations at the major league level yet, so we do not know how his shoulder will hold up to that. Regarding his arm strength, in his latest outing (on Sunday) he was clocked at 97 MPH early in the outing. By the 42nd pitch, he had lost 3-5 MPH off his fastball. This may indicate he still needs to build up his arm strength. He has pitched much better in July, and his overall WHIP is down to 1.34. This tells us his command and control are getting better and the ERA should follow suit shortly.

Michael Young (SS, TEX)

Young suffered a fractured ring finger on his right hand on Monday. The current speculation says he will sit for up to a week to let the swelling go down and the pain to ease. Young had a similar injury to a finger on his left hand earlier in the season. He avoided the DL then and the Rangers believe Young will do so with this injury. While that may be positive news for Young owners, he hit well below .200 for 2-3 weeks after suffering the first finger injury.

Adam LaRoche (1B, PIT)

The Pirates placed LaRoche on the disabled list on Tuesday with a right intercostal strain. The location is toward the back of his ribcage, and that is the reason it was first reported that he had a back injury. The injury could not have come at a worse time. He was hitting .390 in July with three homers in the last three games. This can be a tricky injury to recover from because of the location and nature of the injury. There is less than the normal blood flow to that area, and that can help slow down the recovery. Second, because it is an injury in the torso region, it is difficult not to feel pain every time you move and sometimes breathe. No word yet on how long the Bucs think he will be out. The injury can react similar to an oblique strain, suggesting he could miss up to a month.

John Maine (RHP, NYN)

The Mets removed Maine from his latest outing in the fifth inning due to stiffness in his pitching shoulder. Maine was seen arguing with the coaching staff in the dugout, presumably because felt he did not need to be removed from the game. The pitching coach did not like his arm angle and release point as the game moved on, and they think that is why the stiffness surfaced. Reports on Tuesday indicate he has a mild strain of his rotator cuff. The Mets have not indicated if he will miss his next start. Odds are he will and a trip to the DL is not out of the question.

Joel Zumaya (RHP, DET)

Zumaya was checked out by the medical staff on Monday. The stiffness he felt in his triceps muscle (the muscle in the back of the upper arm) has already disappeared. He is available to work on Tuesday. If this malady does not surface again in the next week or so then it looks like Zumaya and the Tigers avoided a possible serious ailment. If it does return, it points to something going on with his pitch arm.

Joe Crede (3B, CWS)

For the second day in a row, Crede was able to take batting practice without any signs or restrictions involving his lower back. He is on the DL for inflammation in his lower back. The fact he is back in the batting cage so quickly without pain is a very good sign. If it continues, we could see him back August 6-9.

Hank Blalock (3B, TEX)

Blalock, who has under gone surgery for carpal tunnel syndrome and missed time with a torn left hamstring. Now he has inflammation in his right shoulder and is headed back to the disabled list. Blalock indicated he has felt the discomfort in his right shoulder for about a week. No word yet if this shoulder ailment is related to the surgery he underwent a couple of years ago to remove the first rib below his throwing shoulder due to thoracic outlet syndrome,. The odds are it is not.

Nomar Garciaparra (IF, LAD)

Garciaparra suffered a mild sprain of the medial collateral ligament in his left knee. He is listed as day-to-day even though he may head to the DL shortly. The MRI done on the knee ruled out any noticeable structural damage according to Garciaparra. Considering his long track record of not bouncing back quickly from injuries the odds are this one will be drawn out too. He has already missed 76 games due to a torn calf muscle and a broken hand.

Brian McCann (C, ATL)

The Braves do not believe McCann’s his post-concussion symptoms will clear up for a few days but they are not at the point of placing him on the disabled list at this time. Because he plays a valuable position at catcher, the Braves will lean toward a quick hook and placing him on the DL if they see signs he is not going to bounce back quickly.

Pedro Feliz (3B, PHI)

The Phillies placed Feliz on the disabled list due to inflammation in his lower back. He has been out since July 24 with the back ailment. Feliz does not have a long history of back problems so there is not a history to compare his current struggles with it..

Scott Podsednik (OF, COL)

Podsednik has a fractured left pinky finger that makes it more difficult to grip a bat. So the Rockies placed him on the disabled list on Tuesday. He should miss 3-4 weeks. __________________
