Scoring Td to go up 19 in mid-3rd quarter... Go for 2? (1 Viewer)

TD in mid 3rd quarter puts your team up by 19, do you go for 2?

Atlanta decided to go for the single extra point and then found themselves losing by 1 pt after a late rush of pts by Seattle. To make me yell at the TV more... they got a bonus off sides on the first extra point try, so it would have been a even closer 2pt conversion...Why do teams go up by 20 when they could go up by 21? If they miss, they go up by 19. Still 3 Td's are needed for the other team to win and 1 FG the other way to get back a lead. When teams find themselves down by 6 points on a final drive of the game, the winning team will lose if they fail to stop them. If they are up by 7, worst case the other team ties the game and there is OT...

I got an argument with someone in the browns thread midseason when the same scenario happened. Go for two, easy call.

with the expected value of the 2 pt attempt being less than 1, you take the 1 pt attempt (exp value = .97)too many possible scenarios mid-3rd to lower you expected point total.

It was later in the 3rd I think (maybe 3 min left?) and with the way the game had gone I thought they should. Although the more I thought about it later I think taking the XP was the right call. Smith didn't know the D would collapse and Ryan would attempt to choke. If Ryan makes some better throws in the 4th they get the FG earlier and they wouldn't need the late game heroics.

I would have gone for 2, even though most questionable scenarios I say take the point. The reason I would have done it was the time left. By taking the point to put it on 20, you are essentially saying Seattle would have to have 4 scoring possessions for that point to matter. I believe there were about 18 minutes of play left at that point. That was more unlikely than 3 possessions of touchdowns.
