Didn't see a thread on this so....

A buncha years ago I rode Billy Volek to my championship game with a few 40+ point performances until I sat him for Favre.

I'm calling my shot and say Tolzein is going to have a similar arch for a few games.

Flynn was brought in but imo, it's more of a instructional roll to support Tolzein as well as an emergency plan in case Tolzein gets hurt.

Thoughts?

I have a sneaky suspicion that he is going to have a lot of good games. They have a very soft schedule the next few weeks. That and he has a strong bond with Boykin and Bostick as practice squad players. Both of them have huge potential. I am hoping to have a shot at him on waivers but have a low priority.

Nice schedule... but didn't Volek do quite a bit of running during that stretch as well? Not sure that's in Tolzien's bag'o'tricks.

I can see him putting up good numbers though, as long as he's not an INT machine.

 
Maybe the question is is Tolzien as good as Flynn was when he slung it all over a couple years ago.

Tolzien doesn't have much time in the system is the main thing that concerns me. Volek had been a project with the Titans for 2-1/2 years before he took over.

Still not much discussion about his talent, what he did in college, performances in SF preseasons, etc. Don't know anything about him.

FF-wise I am waaayyyy happier with him in there than Seneca.

Seems like Volek had a lot more experience when he was thrust into the starting role. I think he'd been around for 5-6 years. But Tolzien is just a practice squad guy and he's only been with the team for a few months. Doesn't seem the same to me.

Tolzien was the 49er's 3rd string QB for 2 years before being cut this year and put on the Packers PS. I agree he's inexperienced and was disappointed that past two years during the preseason, which is what got him cut in SF, but he's a smart, accurate QB with a lot of weapons.

I don't expect much but I won't be surprised if he has some big games.

 
I like Tolzien but I'm thinking Fitzpatrick might be this year's Volek.

(Rushing yards bonuses, veteran QB, favorable matchups...)

Won the Johnny Unitas Golden Arm award for the nation's best senior QB.

Here's a quote from the 2011 Shrine game prior to the draft:

Tolzien is an interesting prospect. He lacks the ideal mechanics and physical gifts NFL teams covet, but he's one of the smartest college football players you'll ever find. His decision making is superb and he operated in a pro-style offense with the Badgers. While he might never be a full-time starter in the NFL, he's certainly a guy you'd like to have on your roster.

McShay lists Tolzien as one of his top Day 1 performers:

We know his limitations. He's 6-1½, at best (actually 6-2 even at the combine), and there are some throws he can't make. The height, for example, limits some throws, such as in a red zone drill, when he had a receiver on a quick slant but with the offensive tackle and defensive tackle engaged right in front of him, he couldn't get around them quickly enough to make the throw for the score. It's a throw Matt Ryan, Joe Flacco or Ben Roethlisberger throw easily over the offensive tackle for the touchdown. Despite those limitations, he exceeded expectations. It seemed as though he had been running this offense for years. He had good command, got to the line, knew what he was doing and handled the offense with authority.

The Scouts Inc. crew calls Tolzien "the leader of the West team so far."

Oh right Wisconsin, forgot about that, the starter before that Wilson guy got there. The Badgers chuck it pretty good. And he plays in Green Bay where obviously they knew him, the Pack let him throw it 39 times in less than a game, which is impressive.

Hey maybe there's hope.

My main hope is that Jordy Nelson becomes Drew Bennett.

I've never really watched him play but I was kinda liking the Giants to do a number on him this weekend.... They turned it around the past few weeks and they're starting to rush the passer again.... I was going to start that defense this week but you guys go ahead and convince me why I'm wrong... As stated before I've never really watched him play

 
I would probably start the Giants defense. I wouldn't be surprised by a 350yds 3TD and 3 INT stat line. My league doesn't take pts away for turnovers!

I just need one good one out of him... week 12, at home versus MIN.

Hopefully he doesn't tank it this weekend and lose the job to Flynn.

 
Tolzien played well enough to win last week for sure. The defense has let this team down twice in a row. I like Tolzien and hope I can snag him tonight in my 2QB league (not likely). Hopefully Rodgers is back for the fantasy playoffs.

I don't think he did play well enough to win.

Yes, the D sucked.

But the endzone INT...settling for long FGs...and throwing another INT into coverage (sure it was tipped up,but the pass was awful and it was tipped up because he threw into the defense).

The pass to Nelson that was reviewed was a great pass that Jordy should have caught...but still, he did not play well enough to win.

He needs to play better and get the ball into the endzone and not rely on a defense that is pretty beat up too.

 
Someone talk me off the ledge, I really want to start him this week. If you look at the first six weeks of Giants schedule QB's averaged high twenties. The last three weeks they've played subpar QB's, and bad teams.

Aaron Rodgers (collarbone) hinted last Tuesday that he was hoping to return for Week 12, but McCarthy was vague on his progress. "I don't make medical decisions," McCarthy said. "We know (Rodgers) wants to return as soon as he can." Although it wouldn't be stunning were Rodgers to return against the Vikings, it's a long-shot. Rodgers was given a 4-6 week timetable upon going down, and Week 12 would be the third game he's missed. Thanksgiving remains Rodgers' most likely return date, though even that is far from certain. His status should be updated later this week.

I've seen a wide range of interpretations of his play so far. For fantasy purposes, he remains a desperation start.

Tolzien can hit some big plays and seems to have good rapport with Nelson/Boykin. He just doesn't do what's necessary to convert first downs consistently or drive for TDs.

I think the jury is still out on this. Have to remember this is a practice squad player learning how to play 1st string. Would I start him this week, probably not because there are better options on the WW. But he could develop in a very good backup. I trust the judgement of McCarthy and the reasoning why they wanted to keep him. They see something.

Spot on. Only a start in 2 QB leagues. And I'm a homer. He looks good, just not for "fantasy" purposes now. He will be a helluva back up though, going forward in NFL terms.

 
Thinking about dumping Keenum for him. Rodgers owner, so he's just keeping the seat warm.

MIN has given up 23 tot TDs (most in the league), 8 picks all year to QBs.

Every single QB has had a good game against them except for Eli.

rolling with him in 2 leagues where I have Wilson. Love the matchup and hoping for 2 tds...chose him over McCown/Palmer...we'll see what happens...my expectations are relatively low.

He's definitely in the mix this week with Glennon, Palmer, and Alex Smith (good matchup). With people on a bye it seems to make him pretty startable. I'm leaning towards Glennon right now.

 
Starting him (in a must win game to make the fantasy playoffs) over Matt Ryan and Foles (bye week), doubling down on my Saints defense.

I view Tolzien as not a huge ceiling but around a twenty point floor against that awful Vikings secondary at Lambeu Field. If he gets me 20, I'm good. All it will take is a couple of TD's, and 200 yards passing in my scoring system. I'm not feeling Ryan being that safe on a short week.

Getting a little edgy over the weather and matchups in this late bye week.

Any further backers of JRR Tolzien leading a Return Of The WRs?

Starting Nelson here, and I'm guessing some are plugging in Boykin with the hope of a TD, really 2 TDs for Tolzien is what it's really all about.

Temp around 21 but it sounds like clear weather, for what that's worth.

Also any concerns GB just runs Lacy and Starks all day, especially in the RZ?

Thinking of playing him over RG3 this week... little nervous that this Redskins offensive mutiny climaxes with a 49ers smothering on MNF complete with turnovers, injuries, sideline fights, and press conference finger-pointing.

Tolzien was horrific outside of a first-quarter touchdown drive that ended with him dropping a nasty spin move on a defender on his way to the end zone for a six-yard touchdown run. Tolzien was just 7-of-17 for 98 yards, zero touchdowns, and zero interceptions. Flynn replaced him with 8:22 left in the third quarter.
