SD to use Franchise Tag on V. Jackson? (1 Viewer)

(KFFL) The San Diego Chargers are expected to use the franchise tag on WR Vincent Jackson, reports Kevin Acee, of The San Diego Union-Tribune. No official move has been made, but general manager A.J. Smith has reportedly been leaning towards keeping Jackson another year.
Would this anger Jackson again? - at least this time he's be making a decent wage.

I'm sure VJax wants a long-term deal but for $10+ million he'll be in camp day 1. The money associated with the franchise tag is a completely different cash cow than last offseason.

I hope VJ vows to do everything he can to ruin that locker room if they do it. It would be nice if the NFLPA made the NFL agree that the franchise tag can't be used on the same player 2 years in a row.

Does a franchise tag exist?

Either way, I hope he stays in San Diego, as that would be probably his best case fantasy-wise.

Probably better off that way.. If he can avoid getting badly injured and has a great statistical year... He will have been able to watch the dust settle for everyone else going into the new CBA as free agents.. He and his agent will better know how to proceed..

didnt Sproles get the tag last year and not VJax??SD needs to pony up and pay the man. He is a top WR and they need him. THis BS from both sides is ridiculous.

Opps, your right ;) VJ got hosed last year when he didn't become a free agent because it was the last year of the CBA.

he's not worth it
I'm not sure I agree. If (and I realize it's a big "if") he comes in with the right attitude he will be worth it.
why? They have 2010 to go on and he stunk. 5 games 14 catches is not a franchise tag type player. It's a shade less than a mil a catch if the previously stated 10 mil is the correct rate.If so, sign a different WR (if they want, it's not even like they need him. Rivers did well without him) and use the money on something else. Steve Smith and James Jones look like they will be FAs and I'd bet they can get one of them (if not both for 10) for far less than 10 mil per year and use that other money elsewhere. There's other FA WRs. Someone like them would be inclined to sign a long term deal. Jackson looks like a one year thing and...just move on already. 10 mil would be better spent elsewhere.

Jackson was a RFA last year and was tendered. Sproles did get teh franchise tag for the second stright season (and he has to consider himself very lucky to have done so).

technically Sproles received a RFA tender not a franchise tag the second year.

Jackson isn't going to get $ unless he commits to years. This one year stuff is always ugly. His injury history will negatively affect him some and I've felt like, in the past, he wasn't realistic about that. It's going to bring the total down a bit. This is a monetary system and it's super rare that any player is unique in it. The NFL needs to tattoo that on the forehead of every agent. Has there ever been a supposed star WR before? Ever been one that had a few dings? Had a down year due to contract squabble? The agents feed these huge ego players and with a head full of confidence it wrecks everything. Now we've got a soap opera and the Chargers have every right to be a little bitter and so does he, but geesh making this act II in the play is just plain stupid. One other thing, Jax better be careful this time. Act II could certainly scare off some potential GMs and it's not like 32 teams have enough of both cap space and need for him. He, not AJ, has the most to lose if he starts whining.

He was hurt during 3 of the games. We saw the potential though against SF. The guy can be a game changer with Rivers throwing to him. If they're going to tag him I'm guessing they'll be talking to him about a contract potentially before the season. He may be somewhat bitter toward the organization and want to get out asap but all accounts I've read state he's a good teammate and a guy who gives it his all on the field. They may not be able to sign him but SD could be set up for a big 2011 run toward the SB. They've got most, if not all, of the pieces. I can see why they would want to tag him.The guy is big and explosive. I'll gladly take him in the coming year if he falls in drafts. With Rivers throwing to him, he could have a huge year.

His injury history?

I don't see him as being anymore prone to injury then any other WR..

His criminal history might be an issue, but I doubt his injury history is...

You mind elaborating?

You can't be a good teammate if you're not there. It doesn't matter if he's a nice guy and a charitable soul if he's not there either. He wasn't in 2010.One game showed potential? Skip that! That is the problem here.He is an established veteran, not a rookie. In the NFL teams get what they pay for with most established vets. Mason signs in Baltimore, guess what? they got an over the hill vet but he's sure handed. Boldin wasn't the big play guy that Fitz is. Ask every Cards fan if that's a surprise. The guy has been big and explosive since the day he began in the NFL and I've yet to see a 150 catch 2000 yard season from him like so many here make it like he's capable of. How about Floyd? Is he slow? a midget? Yeah I'd be angry Jax got replaced with that mouth from Dallas too, but Legadu did fairly well at times. Newsflash, the O goes through Gates anyway. Yeah sure the former hoops star seems to say his foot hurts every year when the NBA season starts and that's annoying N all, but the guy is awesome. Some weeks Rivers doesn't even seem like he needs to throw anywhere else. Those weeks, it wouldn't matter if they had Randy Moss in his prime.

Yes totally mind. Here that means you want me to go out and hunt down links and factual evidence. He's on the injury report fairly often, he's always got "a hangnail" every offseason and...no sorry, I'm not doing the leg work.

VJax has gotten better with Rivers. Rivers really hit the scene in 2008 and that was VJax 1st 1,000 year season.....with 7 TD's added in. Then in 2009 VJax had over 1100 yards and 9 tds. He's a big play guy that SD obviously would like to keep around or else they wouldn't be considering the tag on him. And that may tell us what we need to know. If they tag him they're willing to pay $10 million which tells me they do think he's a more important piece than you do.

He was banged up his rookie season... 2005 (he played the last 7 games)From 2006 to 2009 he only missed 1 game (63 games in 4 years)2010 Holdout....No major surgeries or injuries to speak of..Seems pretty stable as far as injury history goes..

Serious Q-So what?Floyd had what 700 in 9 games? That could be 1000 easily.Hang on a sec.OK Rivers 4710 and 30 TDs in 2010In 2009, 4258 and 28 TDs. Doesn't seem like Jax's absence negatively affected him.Floyd 717 and 6 TDs, cmon a K and 7 isn't asking much and you said 1st 1000 with 7TDs added in above.Jackson in 2010 14 for 248Ya know who was similar? Seyi. Dude had 12 more yards and one less TD than Jax. So if it's for Rivers' benefit-don't need it, clearly. So if it's for the 1000+7, don't need it.So if it's (hopefully not) for 240 and 3, don't need it.They're fine without him. You don't pay 10 mil on something extra in the NFL. Rivers is going to get a truckload so is McNeal and their picks will command enough $ and...that was 10% of the cap 5 years or so ago. Two links have Peyton making 11 in 2010. There's no way Jax is worth 10 then.If Jax gets 10, what's Rivers ask for next? 20?

Since there is no CBA, there is no Franchise Tag, and we don't even know if there will be one in the future. :shrug:/Yudkin
the owners want a franchise tag they will get one
I've never understood this line of thinking either. It would be interesting to see what most people think the new CBA will look like because I can't help but chuckle when people think it's going to be the owners giving up concessions to the players.
