OK, so how are we supposed to be making the selections? Is this how we would draft if we were the team or how we think the team is going to draft?

With that in mind and assuming we're drafting as we believe the teams should rather than how we think they will.

With the 1st pick in the NFL Draft the Carolina Panthers select:

A.J. Green - WR - Georgia

Can't decide if this is the easiest or most difficult pick in the draft. On one hand this team has a lot of needs to fill, on the other there isn't one player that has totally separated themselves from the rest. It would be nice for a new coaching staff to get a franchise QB but in my opinion both come with too much risk. For that reason I went with Green, who many believe is the best player in the draft at any position.

Looks like this team will be taking the Detroit Lions route to rebuilding, WR first and sorting out the QB position next year.

So we're drafting according to what we THINK they should do or what they actually are going to do.

Because the Panthers are going to take Newton.

With the 2nd pick in the 2011 NFL Draft the Denver Broncos select:

Marcell Dareus - DT - Alabama

Denver will not draft a quarterback in this mock draft. I believe their interest in a new passer is a ruse.

Dareus gets the nod over Fairley. John Elway indicated that the Broncos can't miss with their first pick. Dareus is the surest bet to ensure they don't.

From Mike Mayock, NFL.com:

1. Marcell Dareus, DT, Alabama

He is my favorite player in the country this year, and that hasn't changed. He has tremendous foot speed for a player his size. He can play the nose, the three-technique and showed that he can play the five-technique. From my perspective, I don't think he can possibly get past Denver at No. 2.

Oh well, it's a "mock" and that's not completely out of the question... Though pretty unlikely. Let's go with it, as it'll make things interesting.

The fact is that he's provably the best player in the draft, would improve their team at a position where they're lacking and I don't feel either Qb is worth the #1.Lions took Calvin before they got their Qb so it's not totally unprecedented. I agree that they most likely take Newton in the real draft.

I mostly agree, the mocks where I see Green and Peterson fall because they project teams drafting based mainly on need are unrealistic. However I must contend that IMPACT wise and with the possible introduction of a rookie salary cap, gambling on a guy like Cam Newton is not as much of crapshoot as in years past.

Yeah I'm fine with it. As I said before it'll make things interesting. Like don said, WR is a position of need there.

To be honest it'd be quicker to list the positions Carolina doesn't need.

With the 3rd pick in the 2011 NFL Draft the Buffalo Bills select:

Cam Newton - QB - Auburn

I personally would not like this selection but it's the pick I believe the Bills would make if Newton was available. I think the Bills want to get a franchise QB with this pick and even though Newton has his flaws, he'll be helped along nicely with the Bills. It's almost a perfect match with these two parties. Newton will be able to sit behind Fitzpatrick for at least half a season while he gets used to the NFL. And also, Newton is probabaly the most talented QB Chan Gailey has gotten to work with. Gailey has been succesful and gotten the most out of even average talent (such as Fitz and Thigpen) so I can only imagine what he can do with a talent like Newton. The only thing I worry about is Newtons personality will not mix well with the people from Western New York. But I think after time Newton may mature and could become a very good QB in the NFL.

Who would you pick here?

I will officially jump ship on the Bills if they take Newton. I really want Fairly here, but would settle for Peterson or even Miller or Bowers. This pick HAS to be defense.

Oh, with who's available? Von Miller. Dareus is the clear number 1 on my wishlist for the Bills but with him gone Von moves up. I can honestly see the Bills go with Miller here especially with Gailey coaching him in the Senior Bowl. If not Miller then I would also like to see Peterson. I just don't like Fairley for some reason and I don't think he'll fit well in our defensive scheme. I think he needs to play in a 4-3 D.

I can't argue with buffalo taking a shot at a poetential franchise qb here. If he develops right, newton could be devastating. If he and spiller come up together and develop, you have a sick backfield. More needs to be done with spiller asap, as fred Jackson is getting old real quick.

With pick number 4 in this here mock draft the bengals select... Patty Peterson CB.

I just can't see them taking Gabbert here. I do think they'll address QB later, and if Green were still there he'd have probably been the pick. That leaves Fairly, Bowers and Peterson and in my eye CB is the bigger need. They've got some young talent on the line and if Jonathen Joseph is gone then they need a playmaker in the secondary. Thanks, and lets keep it going.

Either Blaine Gabbert or Von Milller will fall out of the top 5. I don't see either of those scenerios happening in real life.

Not surprised to see Peterson go in the top 5. So many mocks have him dropping to SF, I can't see that happening unless teams truly are enamored with Newton and Gabbert, but hey it happened to Champ Bailey.

No brainer is right-

1.05 - Von Miller, OLB Texas A&M

There's been numerous reports that the Cards wouldn't take Gabbert. And since nobody on the team had more than 6 sacks last year, Miller fits the bill of the 3-4 OLB they've been trying to fix with stopgaps for several seasons now. He already has experience in a 3-4 scheme.

No doubt in my mind the Cardinals would take Miller over Gabbert.

"Yes Mr. Fitzgerald, your limo to the airport is waiting out front..."I understand how a Von miller pick here fills a need with one of the elite players in the draft. But in my mind it's just unlikely that AZ, who is just awful at QB, with the face of their franchise (Fitz) hinting on disillusionment if QB isn't addressed, passes on a chance to draft one of two franchise type QBs in the draft. If they get ahold of kolb or orton this obviously changes. But this is certainly no slam dunk no brainer to draft miller. I would say this is possible but not super likely.McShay and Kiper Jr. both have AZ taking Gabbert in their latest mocks as well.

Can't let a player hold your team hostage.

Nice cliche but in this case: Player = team.
