I really thought I would be taking a corner here but think that the value that Maclin presents is simply to good to pass on.
If you are looking at it that way, perhaps Clay Matthews would also be a solid consideration.Cushing would add a nice pass-rushing ability as well which is greatly needed and would fit the new DC's attacking style of defense.I think if Curry, Mauluga, or Cushing fall to us they will be our pick.McMouthpiece had this to say:Buckna said:If I could lay odds, Houston is the most likely team to trade down. They have depth issues after having no 2nd rounders the last two years, there are no safeties worth this high a pick, there are no complete 4-3 DE prospects, there will be a plethera of options at corner at this slot and that is not that pressing a need if they resign or franchise Dunta Robinson. But since there are no trades in this mock, this is the pick I would have made as well. Cushing would have been my first option as I'm not sold on Maybin, but he went one slot ahead to NO. Morlon Greenwood is a likely cut, Will Demps is coming off a broken leg and Adibi is more of a depth option to me. GM Rick Smith recently came back from the Senior Bowl gushing about how impressive the linebackers were at the practices so I think a LB'er makes about as much sense as a DE if the DE prospects left aren't all that promising.coolnerd said:Houston Texans select Aaron Maybin DE Penn StateThis is a pick where all my alternatives had questions, so I went will a productive, character guy which is what generally I think the Texans lean towards. My issue with Maybin is that he has not played a ton of college football and like Oyoke before him could take longer to be a quality pro than I really want to wait. The Texans need a pass rusher across from Mario williams so it fills a need. In terms of pure BPA Macklin or Vontae Davis might be a little better, but assuming the Texans sign or franchise Robinson both of those needs are secondary to finding a potential pass rusher. Honestly, I am not excited about Maybin, but not sure if any player would be a better match of talent and need. The Texans also need to get bigger and better at outside linebacker.Xavier Adibi, who weighed 225, made some big plays when he was healthy. The problem was that he wasn’t healthy enough. In a perfect world, Adibi puts on about five or 10 pounds of muscle and stays healthy, but the Texans won’t know for sure until the season.Because of the uncertainty over Diles and Adibi, Smith and Kubiak need to add an outside linebacker. Keep in mind that it’s not out of the question that they will use their first-round pick on one because it’s a talented position in this draft.
I would boo it as well, but only because I think Maclin would be scary on that team. Maclin is a weapon.BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!pgreenfan said:1.16 San Diego Chargers - Jeremy Maclin, WR - While not the biggest need of the Chargers Maclin gives them a game changer at WR who compliments Vincent Jackson extremely well. This is a pick, should the circumstance present itself, that the Bears would have to make. With Orton going into the last year of his contract, you simply don't know what you have in him and to not protect yourself at this position is haphazard. Sanchez now is your QB of the future and if by chance, Orton blows up, then you have a very desirable asset to either franchise and trade (Orton) or trade (Sanchez).18. The Chicago Bears take: Mark Sanchez QB USC
The Bears need a ton of help. O-line is old, WR depth is non-existant, DE is underacheiving, Secondary could use some healthy bodies. All that being said, they REALLY need a QB. Actually, they REALLY needed a QB for decades. They got snaked on Culpepper, they decided not to take Flacco, they passed on Aaron Rogers and Brady Quinn when they free-falled right passed them in recent years. What makes me think they'll pull the trigger this year? Truth be told, I think they're sick of playing musical QB every year (at least that's my hope). This franchise needs a leader on offense and hopefully he can be that person. He'll also have the luxery of sitting behind Orton and learn the offense next year, something most rookie QB's drafted in the first don't have.
I also considered Britton, Harvin, Mack and English, but I feel that this was a pick I needed to make given the circumstance. When all is said and done though, I don't actually expect Sanchez to be here, but weirder things have happened.
Not a fan of this pick. The Bears are traditionally built off defense & running. I think they could use some OL help. Last time they made the Super Bowl that had a hotshot young 1st round QB - Rex Grossman, who is ironically still on the roster.Having two backup QB's with big contracts isn't a great idea.18. i like this pick a lot. The drop off from Sanchez to a QB to a QB the Bears could get in round 2 is a LOT steeper than the drop off from Eben Britton to a offensive lineman they can get in round 2.18. The Chicago Bears take: Mark Sanchez QB USC

I like Sanchez and think he'll be a very good NFL QB. The OL prospects, outside the 4 that already went earlier, are just as much a crapshoot. Well I got the contract wrong, but I'd still prefer the OL.I like that pick a lot, I have a feeling the Bucs offense is going to look very different than it did when Gruden was there. Getting a big RB is a good 1st step.#19 TAMPA BAY SELECTS - RB CHRIS WELLS, OHIO STATE
The Bucs Offense needs an identity.... and was hoping that Sanchez lasted one more slot.
Wells would help solidify the RB spot crushed by injuries in 08 and take pressure off whatever QB is behind center in this year as well as eat some clock to keep the defense rested.
The D in Tampa fell apart the second part of the season but still finished in the top 5 overall,,,,, but could use help on the D Line still although I dont llike any of the DTs availible.
Who would you have taken? nice addition for the Lyons. Hes a great blockerI have a feeling a lot of Lions fans won't like this pick, but I think it would be a great addition and it ties in with the Stafford pick.
20. Detroit Lions select: Brandon Pettigrew TE Oklahoma State
I don't really think the O-lineman available here are any different than the guys who will be available at the top of round 2. I would have taken Davis at CB if he'd fallen here, but really this pick came down to Pettigrew or Laurinaitis.
Adding Pettigrew should give them a reliable underneath target for Stafford while teams are doubling and tripling Calvin Johnson, plus Pettigrew is a very good blocking TE and that will benefit Kevin Smith and the running game.
I kinda view Pettigrew as a more athletic Heath Miller and that is well worth a mid first round pick in my eyes.
This pick gives the Lions a very promising set of skill position starters with Stafford, Smith, Calvin and now Pettigrew.
I'm sure the Eagles are cursing up a storm now.I have a feeling a lot of Lions fans won't like this pick, but I think it would be a great addition and it ties in with the Stafford pick.

Glut..?? ...maybe in body count but not talent...I felt that Dunn is about done....Graham is ok talent at best who got injured...and sadly Caddy is facing another rehab.Wells is solid value here, although I've never completely warmed up to him...The question I have is this...at RB, the Bucs now have Earnest Graham, Warrick Dunn and Cadillac Williams.#19 TAMPA BAY SELECTS - RB CHRIS WELLS, OHIO STATE

I recognize that Caddy is beyond injury plagued, but from what I've heard/seen, his most recent injury is not close to as severe as his original injury. Graham IMO is a solid and versatile RB that can pretty much do anything you ask of him. Dunn could be a cap casualty, but was productive last year. And given TB has about as much salary cap as a team can have, the need to waive Dunn would seem to be minimal.
I guess my point is that even before the drafting of Wells, there was a significant RB glut here.
At #21 The Philadelphia Eagles Select: Eben Britton OT Arizona
The Eagles couldnt be more pleased with Britton falling into their laps. They have a definite need at the position with serious question marks in Runyan and Thomas. At 6'6" and 310+ lbs he should be able to fill in for either Tackle next season.
The Eagles believe the game is won upfront with the big boys so I highly doubt they would use this pick on a RB like McCoy or Greene. The need is there, the talent is available, its a no brainer.

Personally i'd rather have Britton than Pettigrew, but would be happy enough with either of them. For RB i'm not too sure in which direction the Eagles should go. McCoy's style is very similar to that of Westbrook and i think he'd be a great replacement for Westbrook once Westy retires. But since his style is so similar and since Westy still has the skills to start at RB draft McCoy doesn't really help us right now. Greene is a big back who could take over goal line/short yardage carries and would in turn help our team out a lot more for next year than McCoy would. Once Westy is done we would have change our game plan pretty significantly or add a new RB who can make catches out of the backfield. This is who I would have taken too. The corners were tough to pass on for sure. I just think that Harvin impacts two phases of the game and hopefully would cause Chili to not be so conservative with the offense. I think they'd get more mileage out of AP with Harvin on the field.Plus I think there'll be some good corners available in round 2, if necessary.Wow, surprised me Andy. I was hoping Britton would fall and don't see the Vikings taking a WR, at least this early. With only on CB off the table I was thinking it was a windfall for them with DJ Moore or Alphonso Smith still on the board. They need to address that situation with Griffin being OK, no decent nickel option with Gordon being a ??? due to injury and Winfield only signed for one more year.
I'll take care of it. Either make the pick myself or find someone to do it.then we still need 1 more guy for the Panthers then i think.Just two this time around. After the combine we'll do one that goes 3.how many rounds are we going to do? If we're doing 2 (or more) we still need a team for the Panthers.
Neither Moore or Alphonso Smith skillset mesh well with the the Vikings imo. Moore and Smith are both cover guys who aren't great tacklers or great in run support. The Vikings seem to like there CBs to be good tacklers which is evident in both Winfield and Griffin.Wow, surprised me Andy. If you'd wanted to make the draft picks you should have claimed it earlier, I offered and you passed. You don't need to drop your hints to me in the thread. I'm sorry if you don't like who I draft. My pick will be up soon.Meh, scrumtrulescent may call Sean Smith or D.J.Moore here, but my homer pick is James Laurinaitis (now that Andy took Harvin off the board).Plaigarized excerpt that caught my eye....During three years as a starter for the Buckeyes, Laurinaitis collected 376 tackles, nine interceptions and 13 sacks. While the Big Ten has received a great deal of negative attention directed at their ability to compete with the "Big Boy" programs, Lauranaitis can point to nine tackles versus USC, nine tackles versus Texas, 18 tackles versus LSU in the 2007 BCS Championship games and 15 tackles versus Florida in the 2006 BCS championship game as proof that he can produce no matter how bright the lights shine.

We should have screened the drafters. This looks like a pick made by a CHICAGO Hooligan for the Green Bay Packers. I just not in a million years could see this happening with the defensive players on the board. This team had defensive issues and there are so many better choices on that side of the ball with this pick. This just aint gonna happen. If this happened on draft day I gotta believe someone would be fired over night.I've got to say, as a Packer fan, I'm definitely surprised by this. <_<With the 9th pick in the first round, the Green Bay Packers select:
Knowshon Moreno, RB, Georgia
(scattered boos)
Another good spot to trade down from, with Everette Brown, Raji and Jenkins available. If "stuck" drafting at #9 they all look like good additions to GB's new 3-4 defense. When we began this draft I was sure I wanted Jenkins.
But I remember that in the games last year where the Packers were in control, they wanted to and did run more - the times when Grant had 25, 30, or even more carries. Brandon Jackson can make plays on the outside and in the passing game but isn't a great secondary runner. The team's RB scouting (beyond Grant) looks iffy, with Morency, Herron, Wynn etc. not finding homes elsewhere once off GB's roster.
Moreno is fast, strong, has good hands, and is absolutely a 1st round RB. There is (supposedly) low demand for the position in this year's first round, but just means you can find a good one later than usual. I looked at last year's mock linked in the first post and noticed that someone took Chris Johnson in the 2nd round for the Packers - a guy they didn't "need" but who would have certainly improved the offense. Same for Felix Jones in Dallas last season. There are 3-4 defenders available through the 2nd and 3rd rounds: the Packers choose to start with the draft's best RB.
No need to rip this pick. I think Sintim is the best fit if you are looking for a LB to fit the Pats scheme. I thought you would go with a CB but I like the Sintim pick too.1.23 The Patriots select, Clint Sintim, OLB, VirginiaThe Patriots were way down in the sack categories and the interception categories in 2008. A lot of that had to do with injuries to their LB's. A lot of that had to do with their LB's being old. Sintim is a fantastic pass rusher and blitzer with 20 sacks accumulated in his Junior and Senior years. He's played all 4 years in Al Groh's 3/4 defense, which obviously, Bill Belichick understands very well. Sintim could play OLB from day one in Bill's system if needed, but he also adds the flexibility of playing on the inside if needed. Belichick could either move Sintim inside and Adalius out, or vice versa. Either way it impacts New England's rush defense, and it's defense as a whole. With a stronger pass rush we will see more sacks from NE and more int's.I considered Laurinaitis here but don't feel he makes much of an impact. He makes a lot of tackles and is a good leader on defense but I don't think it's Belichick's style to take a player in the 1st round that won't make much impact. I was hoping by some miracle Chris Wells would fall but when that didn't happen, I struggled to find an impact player that was so ready made for the Patriots. I think Sintim's not only the best fit here, I also believe he can have the most impact.Rip away!
As Andy stated, there are CB's to be had in the 2nd if necessary. NE did draft 2 CB's last year also so they have some young talent, if they can stay healthy. I figured I'd get ripped because everyone would think Laurinaitis is the pick. Laurinaitis makes meNo need to rip this pick. I think Sintim is the best fit if you are looking for a LB to fit the Pats scheme. I thought you would go with a CB but I like the Sintim pick too.
Personally, I'm not entirely sure why everyone has Sintim lower than Cushing. Is it because one week at the Senior Bowl when he pumped an extra shot of roids? No rip coming from me. Stintim is a smart, productive and versatile player. If you had to list three qualities that the Pats under BB look for in prospects, smart, productive and versatile would be a pretty good choice. Laurinatis wouldn't be a bad choice either, but I'd also prefer Stintim for the Pats as he can fill more roles.1.23 The Patriots select, Clint Sintim, OLB, Virginia

With a stronger pass rush we will see more sacks from NE and more int's.
I considered Laurinaitis here but don't feel he makes much of an impact. I think Sintim's not only the best fit here, I also believe he can have the most impact.
Rip away!
You didn't offend me, but maybe you should have taken the draft. If you really want it, you can take the NE draft picks in the 2nd. Just let me know.I think Sintim is a much better choice than Laurinaitis. Laurinaitis will be nothing special in the NFL in my opinion.Wow. Sorry if I offended you.If you'd wanted to make the draft picks you should have claimed it earlier, I offered and you passed.
Oh, I've got something for you to screen.
I sounds like you wanted a linebacker and Laurinatis was the best left. Did you consider any other players or positions? On the heels of scrumtrulescent dumping all over him...
The Atlanta Falcons select: James Laurinaitis OLB; Ohio State
For the Falcons, one of their off-season priorities will be to revamp their LB corps, a process that began last year with the drafting of Curtis Lofton. Keith Brooking has probably played his last down as a Falcon, and it appears the Falcons are content to allow Michael Boley to leave via FA after a disappointing contract year. While this is not set in stone, I suspect neither player will don a Falcons uniform in ’09.
As such, LB becomes a significant priority this off-season and the choice here is between Laurinaitis and Clay Matthews. Matthews is intriguing because of his versatility and potential to play either the strong side or the weak side. But the Falcons choose to move Laurinaitis to the weak side (after playing the middle during college) because of his all-around ability, not to mention substantial track record and 3-down outlook. Lofton was a 2-down MLB and the Falcons have the option of moving Laurinaitis to MLB on 3rd downs now. While his stock has slipped a bit in the past year, he grades out as a player who should be at the very least very solid, and he should provide an immediate and capable replacement to the departed Brooking.
