I know everyone is excited to post their pick, but lets not throw five up in five minutes and not talk about the picks. I don't know what the "proper" length of time is.

With the 1st pick of the 2009 NFL Draft the Detroit Lions select:
1.01-QB Matthew Stafford-Georgia
Detroit is obviously rebuilding, and they have been weak at QB for as long as I've been alive(really going back to Layne) they saw what a difference Matt Ryan and Joe Flacco made and will hope Stafford can make a similar impact in what is a wide open division.
Many Lions fans will be hoping for an O-lineman here, but I believe a QB makes more sense. This is an extremely deep draft for O-lineman and Detroit has 2 other picks in the top-33. There should be a quality O-line prospect available at one of those picks, they likely won't be a quality QB prospect available at those picks, hell, Stafford might be the only really good prospect at QB this year.
Watching Stafford in college, he kind of reminds me of Carson Palmer, and with Calvin Johnson and Kevin Smith in place, the Lions will be pretty set at the skill positions for some time with this pick.
I considered Crabtree(who I think is the best player in this draft) but I believe Detroit is very aware of what the reaction would be if they took another top-10 WR.
ETA: I don't think there is a defensive player worthy of this pick. I believe the Lions may be a player for Matt Cassel, but since there are no trades allowed, Stafford is the choice.

Kind of surprising but it makes sense to me. I live in Michigan and all the Lions fans I know want the best OT possible.

Solid pick for the Lions and at this point the most likely. As far the offensive linemen, do you think the Lions would consider trading up to get one of the top 4 tackles using the #20 and #33? So take Stafford #1 and trade #20 and #33 to move up into the #7-#10 range to add one of the tackles as well?

I would be very surprised with a trade up. Detroit's entire team needs replacing beyond Calvin, Kevin Smith, and maybe Ernie Sims. They need picks. I wouldn't put it past them to trade down from 20 in order to get more picks. There is good OL to be had between 20 and 33.

If I'm the Lions, I don't give up picks to trade up. They need all the draft choices they can get and they need to make them count.The good news for the Lions is that they are almost guaranteed to make their team better with their first selection. Even a bust would be better than most guys on their roster.There's nothing wrong with taking Stafford here. To win anything of meaning in the NFL you have to have a good QB and Stafford is this year's top QB. I think it's more likely that they take one of Monroe/Smith/Oher. I could also see Curry being the first linebacker taken 1st overall since Arrington in 2000.
I think it would depend on who fell and how far they fell, but I can't really see Detroit trading 2 high picks to move up a few spots, they have so many holes that quantity is probably as big a factor as quality. Also, I think its likely that the teams picking 7-10 will all be looking at Offensive Tackles.Ideally I'd like to have taken an OT at #1 and trade the #20 pick for Cassel, but this works too.
ETA: Detroit can't come out of this offseason without a QB upgrade.

I agree with all responding that the Lions have too many holes to be trading away prime picks. But the drop off after the first 4 tackles seem to be significant and offensive line seems ot be one of their more pressing needs. What about the reverse? The Lions take Eugene Monroe at the #1 and then Stafford somehow is still on the board at the #7-#10 range?
Other options include trading a pick for Cassel and the Lions are rumored to be close to signing Shack Harris as Assistant GM, he does have a history with Byron Leftwich who is a free agent.

putting a rookie QB in that mess Detroit has could be career suicide for Stafford.
If Im a Lions fan I would want them to use their top 3 picks this year on the core of the team (OL/Defense) that needs improving .... then take a later flier on QB with potential ( Bomar / Freeman??) and still grab a FA QB.

travdogg makes a good argument for the Stafford pick. OT can be argued here but he's right, the successes of young QB's and their impact in 2008 make this an even stronger case for a QB given the revolving door at QB for the Lions in 2008.

I would guess Crabtree, Curry and Eugene Monroe are the options here, with an edge to Monroe. But I really wanted input from someone that follows the Rams closely.

The OTs will probably last longer than they should in our draft as we make more "exciting" picks at the top.
But maybe that's not totally unrealistic, because everyone just watched teams start some below average o-linemen in the Super Bowl. All the pre-draft talk suggests that demand for offensive playmakers aside from Crabtree is down in relation to pass rushers and linemen but that may not hold true.

I could see Curry as a bit of a darkhorse here. Who knows how Spags is going to run things in St. Louis.Personally I'd take Crabtree if I were the Rams, especially since I'm of the belief that they will dump Holt, but at the same time their o-line has been a weakness pretty much since Martz left, though that's probably unrelated.Wadsworth said:

The problem there is that there are not that many great defensive players either. Orakpo and Curry are the only real impact defensive players I see at the top. Even guys like Jenkins and Maualuga have questions around them. If Orakpo impresses at the combine, he's going to make himself a lot of money. I'm not sure he can go #1 overall, but he could go #3 to the Chiefs.

Good pick. I think arguments can be made for any of the top linemen. Smith, though, could play the right side (replacing the perennially underachieving Alex Barron) until Pace decides to retire. Or he could step right in for Pace if he retires this offseason. I think this is the right choice.Blackjacks

In my opinion this should be the easiest pick in the draft. The Rams need oline help and here's Smith falling into their lap. For anyone who questions how good this kid is you could have watched any Alabama game this year and then watched the Sugar bowl when Smith wasn't on the field. It was like a complete different team. Smith will be available to play the right side until Pace is done and gives the Rams the ability to move Barron to play guard. I believe Spags is going to want to be a physical team and that he will emphasize running the ball.
The popular pick lately has been to crab Crabtree. While I think he might be a very good player I see 2 reasons that isn't going to happen.
1) I personally think the Rams like Macklin more than Crabtree
2) When you've picked #2 2 years in a row you obviously need ore power on your line.
