He was the Cowboys choice if I had gone S until I decided to take the CB route.
Another potential target for Dallas off the board. Their pick in the 2nd is going to be huge in the real draft as while they have multiple picks in later rounds there are so many needs. I suspect they'll trade up for multiple 2nds by the time we're all said and done.

I like the pick and agree with the need for a DT, but would be tempted to take Nate Davis (I know you don't care for him) or Phil Loadholt. They need to get that RT position straightened out and Loadholt is a beast that would fit right in.

The New York Giants Select – Jamon Meredith, OT, South Carolina
The Giants already have one of the best offensive lines in the NFL but it can be better, not only from a starter perspective but also with regards to overall depth. David Diehl is a solid LT and could start for most teams in the NFL at that position, but he is vulnerable to speed rushers. Ware owned him at DAL last season. Most of the time he does well and he isn’t the only LT a guy like Ware is going to have success against, but improvement can be made.
Even though Diehl is a good LT, he can be a great LG. He can be one of the best in the league at guard. Seubert at LG has been similar to Diehl at LT. A good player who could probably start for most teams in the league, but all that really makes him is above average as a starter. One of Seubert’s strengths is his versatility and he would be a great #6 offensive lineman since he would be a starter quality backup all along the interior of the line, providing a significant improvement to the overall depth.
As a result, this pick will have a ripple effect and ultimately improve 3 positions on the line – LT, LG and primary backup. One of the reasons this offensive line has been so good for the past couple of years is because they have all remained healthy for the most part. Even though getting an improvement to the starters on the left side is great, getting the quality depth is critical. This unit can’t reasonably expect to have such great overall healthy year after year. Quality depth is lacking and this pick at the very least provides that.

The Big 12 was pass happy this year and Ziggy finished with 17 TFL 5 sacks. The Colts have two great outside pass rushers and the addition of Big Albert Hanyesworth make them very soild on the line. Hood should be able to create a some pressure with the one on one matchup.

Ideally down in the 2nd then up from the 3rd for two picks later in the 2nd but we'll see. Since their 3rd is earlier than I was thinking perhaps they stand pat and then deal up for multiple 3rd's. It's so early to truly predict as they haven't filled needs in free agency, brought in a defensive coordinator, and other rumored options.

Was hoping Ziggy would be there for the Steelers. There still are some interesting guys left for the Steelers:

Jarron Gilbert- interesting DT/DE prospect. Our DE's are getting up there in age, so an infusion of youth could certainly help.

I was hoping that Wood was going to be there for the Bills in the 3rd. I know awesomeness gave me a list when I selected for the Bills in the 2nd and Wood was on there. I thought there was a chance he was gonna slide under the radar and fall to the Bills in the 3rd.good pick. Pope just hasnt turned into the go-to WR that they had hoped for. And while Ben Patrick is a solid player, they have had a missing presence at TE for a while now. While this may be a little early, Beckum is 6'4, 235 and has great recieving skills. He can play in the slot or can come in and block. Very versatile.

Really glad that you are only doing a mock pick and not the real deal. Issue with the running game has been more on the offensive line than the backs. Moreno is not going to be that big of an improvement unless the line plays better. Sure think there was some better players out there in need areas on this team.If you are talking about Hawk as underachieving player, you should take a look at the BS scheme he was playing in. Hawk is more of a downhill player and in BS's sheme it was read and react. A healthy Hawk will be a better player in the new scheme. Will give you Harrell if that is the 1st rounder you are talking about.

2.32 Pittsburgh Steelers select Phil Loadholt OT, Oklahoma
Completing the OU double.
This is a pick I really struggled with and I make with a lot of reservations. I have serious questions about Loadholt's character and intelligence. Seems to have a bit of the knucklehead factor with a high bust potential. I know he will struggle with speed of the edge as well. That said, I considered multiple interior lineman and defensive ends but, at the end of the day, two things swung me in Loadholt's direction. The first, he simply has size that cannot be taught. Second Willie Colon.

With NFL coaching Loadholt should develop into an at least average RT, potentially starting from Day 1, and has the upside for far more. Despite his already huge size, he actually has the frame to add 20 more pounds as he looked very lean at the Senior Bowl. Like a few prior teams picks, there is a domino effect for the rest of the line since Loadholt allows Colon to shift inside and compete with Stapleton/Simmons at the RG position essentially upgrading two positions for the price of one.
Both Ziggy Hood and Eric Wood were on my short list at this point, but went immediately prior to this pick. I likely would have gone with Loadholt regardless. As mentioned, multiple interior lineman were considered, but I see them as essentially equal to Colon and basically interchangeable.
Between Robinson and Loadholt, the Parker/Mendenhall combo should have far more daylight to run to in 09.

With the 3.01 pick in the draft the Detroit Lions select DE Paul Kruger, Utah
The Lions finally address their line...on defense. I think Kruger is quite the steal in round 3, I wouldn't be shocked to see him go late in round 1. He is a solid pass rusher who has a lot of untapped potential. I could see him becoming the player Kalimba Edwards never could. Kruger also has the frame to add another 10-15 pounds(up to 270-280) although some teams may see him going the other way and dropping some weight to play in a 3-4 at OLB.
All in all, I think this is another steal for Detroit and while the O-line continues to go unaddressed, the Lions have now added 4 very talented building blocks at other need positions.

Thanks, I gave the list a twice over and still missed him. Seemed fishy that he'd have fallen that far.

Williams is an underrated WR to me, I prefer him to Nicks(lack of speed) and Iglesias(not as much upside) I don't think Williams is going to be a superstar, but I think he will have a solid career as a second fiddle type. He actually reminds me a bit of Darrell Jackson in that he seems like a jack of all trades type WR, but isn't a true playmaker, though Penn ST.(Morelli) may have held him back, which of course wouldn't matter in Detroit. Also can help in return game.
That's another weapon for Stafford, and with that, the skill postions are pretty much set barring injury for several years. Looks the rebuilding of the O-line and defense will have to come in free agency or in 2010. Though, I believe Schwartz' presence alone should make the defense much better, though likely still below average. That's ok though, nobody is suggesting the Lions are going to be a one year fix.

I like Beckwith here; good pick.I am surprised however by the freefall of opinion here re: James Laurenitis who prior to the senior bowl was talked about as the No.2 LB in the draft behind the Samoan/Hawaiian? at USC. Now people think he will be significantly out-performed by Cushing, Sintim and Beckwith. Poor guy may have spent a lot of draft position money at the senior bowl; perhaps combine or workout times will improve his stock in a couple months....

Some good thoughts here. We're in agreement on the MLB, NT/DE status. Also agree on the need for young OL to groom.We're in significant disagreement about the secondary. I think the team is strong at corner and in big need of a quality safety. Hamlin is the only legit starter on the roster. He is firmly entrenched at free safety. Roy Williams is likely to be a salary cap casualty. His coverage problems are legendary. Keith Davis is a good special teamer. But he was backing up Roy for a reason. Watkins has had his 3 years in the system and he's shown he's not the answer. His contract is up and I question whether he returns. Anthony Henry is not a starter at FS ahead of Hamlin. Hamlin is not a quality SS. He doesnt possess the tackling ability to do it regularly. Henry is an average CB. He is a good nickle/dime safety. He does NOT start ahead of Hamlin though. Moving him to free and Hamlin to strong is not the answer. That backfield covers well, but doesnt cut it in run support. Thats fine for 3rd and long, but not 2nd and 3.At CB, there is Newman, Scandrick, Jenkins, and Henry. Four very solid guys. Not to mention Ball who played well in limited time last year. Yes, Newman and Henry are both over 30. But Jenkins and Scandrick are more than adequate as future starters. CB is not a need in the short term.There is a very real chance that a rookie could start at SS. Really, the only position on the roster where a rookie might start. Had I been picking at 51, I likely would have gone with Johnson from Alabama or Chung from Oregon State. Had Brace from BC been on the board, I might have gone for him as well. They do need some DL with Tank and Canty likely moving on. But at 51, safety would have been my call.Perhaps at 3.5 it can be addressed.

If I remember correctly, Atomic Punk had the masses doa consensus pick in Round 2 since he missed his 1st round pick and didn't follow the draft. I'm assuming same situation here...

Let's assume that Larry Johnson is out of KC. If so, they don't have anyone to carry the load. Davis had an up and down career at Clemson, but a lot of that was due to splitting carries as well as playing behind a terrible line. I think he's great value here.
Let's assume that Larry Johnson is out of KC. If so, they don't have anyone to carry the load. Davis had an up and down career at Clemson, but a lot of that was due to splitting carries as well as playing behind a terrible line. I think he's great value here.
