Sharper Re-signs with Saints (1 Viewer)

Saints re-signed FS Darren Sharper to a one-year contract.

Sharper, 34, tied for the league lead with nine INTs last year while chipping in 71 tackles and 15 pass breakups. Though not much of a run-stopping safety, Sharper's ball skills and aggressiveness in coverage always made New Orleans his best fit under up-tempo coordinator Gregg Williams. 2009 first-round pick Malcolm Jenkins will stay at corner, and battle Randall Gay for nickel back duties. Usama Young will continue to focus on special teams.

Agent: Sharper to remain a Saint

Associated Press Reporting

Darren Sharper is returning to the New Orleans Saints for at least one more year.

He posted the following to his Twitter page: "To the entire WHO-DAT Nation, guess what? I'M BAACKK!"

His agent, Joel Segal, says Sharper has agreed to the deal.

Sharper, an All-Pro safety, helped the Saints win their first Super Bowl last season.

NFL.com says that Sharper has agreed to terms on a one-year contract with the New Orleans Saints, according a league source.

Sharper returns to the Saints after recording 71 tackles and nine interceptions, three of which he returned for touchdowns, in his first season in New Orleans.

The five-time Pro Bowler was an unrestricted free agent and was reportedly pursued by the Jaguars before deciding to return to help the Saints defend their Super Bowl title.

Sharper spent his first eight seasons in Green Bay, folllowed by four years with the Minnesota Vikings.

The Patrick Robinson first round pick was intriguing, especially with Porter, Greer and Jenkins already in place at CB. I guess Malcolm Jenkins will stay at CB then, unless they expect to play a lot of nickel and then use multiple DBs? Still an interesting first pick of Robinson, nonetheless.

34 years old and coming off of microfracture surgery probably means that someone (Jenkins, Vaughn, or Young) will probably at least see some snaps in center field. I wouldn't expect the same production out of Sharper this year, but I am glad that he's back.

... Sharper's only signed for one more season. I'm betting that Jenkins is the Saints' starting FS in 2011.
