Shaun Phillips - Ceiling? (1 Viewer)

Starting the free agency period in one of my dynasty leagues. Phillips is out there. Sacks are scored 3 points per, relative to 1 point for a tackle, .5 to an assist. He's been improving every year, and the bidding on him has gotten pretty nuts. So I'm wondering - what is this guy's ceiling? Can he continue to develop and be a top 15 type player in this scoring system?

Possible suggestion - maybe a pinned thread for Off-Season IDP Coaches Corner for questions like this? I have a lot of specific questions like this about players, and I'd really like to be able to get the IDP forum's input on them, but I also do not want to be starting threads for my own personal questions. I'm sure there are a lot of questions out there for IDP free agency in dynasty leagues.

Just a thought.

I like Phillips. I don't think his upside is much higher than how he performed this year however. He consistently got sacks. His 11 sacks were spread across 9 games. He missed some time with injury but later recovered. He is 26 years old so in his prime right now and I think it helps him having Merriman playing opposite as teams have to focus on stopping Merriman on the other side.

I could see his tackle numbers improving slightly and maybe another sack or 2 as long as he is healthy the whole season and doesen't have to share with another player in a rotation like he did the 2 years before this one. So a little upside is there. But I wouldn't expect him to improve too much. I think he is allready near his peek.

That being said I still think he is a fine Lber as long as you can live with some inconsistency from the lower tackle numbers when he doesen't make any big plays. I might have to make him a free agent myself in one league but I would prefer not to.

I agree with Biabreakable so I'll just echo his points in my own words.

This season's production is about as good as you can expect from a 3-4 OLB not named Merriman. Both Phillips and Ware are going to threaten double digit sacks every season. But in your standard scoring system, both guys are going to be inconsistent options. Unless you're into risk-reward lineup management and can live with a 2-1-0 now and then while waiting for the 6-1-2 games, let someone else overpay and assume the risk.

I am a die hard SD fan and I went to several games and was very impressed with Phillips. I recommend him very Highly. He is very young and with Merriman on the other side taking all the double teams Phillips should have double digit sacks every season
