Shawne Merriman - re-signs in buffalo (1 Viewer)

Smells like chicken
The Buffalo Bills have re-signed LB Shawne Merriman to a two-year contract, reports ESPN's Chris Mortensen.

Our view: Somewhat surprising move by the Bills here. Merriman was signed after the Chargers released him but some thought there would be no way that he stayed with the Bills. Buffalo does need to improve their pass rush dramatically and a healthy Merriman would help that.

True. In other news, a young Brett Favre would help the Minnesota Vikings.

I would say I'm cautiously optimistic... but I don't even feel that good about it. I'll try to have an open mind about it, because - as a Bills fan - that's about all we're left with. The magic ingredient to Merriman's success seemed to be roids.... until he shows me otherwise.

He tested positive in June or July of 2006 and stopped taking them (or stopped accidentally ingesting them or whatever) at that point. He had excellent seasons in 2006 and 2007.What killed his career was the injury he suffered against the Titans at the end of 2007. He's never been the same since then.Does anyone know the dollar amount of the extension he just signed? How much is guaranteed? I'd be surprised if it's very much. Buddy Nix was with the Chargers back when Merriman was a stud; I wonder how much that played into it.

I think that's the key, how much is gauranteed and you woudln't think very much of it. Depending how it's structured it could be good for the Bills.Everyone made a huge deal about Donovan McNabb getting signed by Washington (the extention of that huge contract) but the little fine print at the bottom said if they don't want him after this year, they can cut him. It could say Donovan McNabb's getting paid 100 million next year, he's gone from that team.So it really matters to how this thing with Merriman is worded and structured.

That's kind of my thoughts too when I read that kind of language. CBS is the worst at it in their fantasy analysis. They'll give you what's wrong with the player and then their analysis. For example, Calvin Johnson's missed practice all week, he's a game time decision but a healthy Calvin Johnson is a must start in all leagues.REALLY?? What we need to know is IF he's healthy, not that he's a must start when he is healthy.

Ya, a healthy Merriman would help Buffalo and any other team in the NFL. Is he healthy?

Mort is saying $8-9 mil per year with $2.5 of it guaranteed this year.No clue what the real number is, but even a 1 year deal for $2.5m seems excessive, so I can't imagine this will be good for the Bills....
