Sheff Cut (1 Viewer)

NY/NJMFDIVER

This is a tragedy in the making, but I guess someone will let him swing for the minimum, but so far every rumored team on mlb trade rumors has shown no interest in Sheffield. He's really got a Gaylord Perry thing going on as a hitter, think fast, what team do you identify him with? Its not even like he can do the Eddie Murray retirement run, because he's a man without a country.

I do think he's a fit with the Mets though, they could use a righty prescence off the bench.

Buster reports the Phils are looking into it. Um, no thanks. :trainwreck:
I was shocked to read this as well. Um, he can't play the field anymore and this is the NL
The Phils could use a right handed bat but I don't understand the logic behind their apparent interest either.
Maybe the Phils want a right handed over the hill DH to go with their already rostered left handed over the hill DH?Who needs defense!

They kept Stairs and dumped Jenkins (and his salary)

It sure will make for an strange situation if the Royals or some team sign him and he hits 500. How does the team handle that? Is it celebrated? Does 500 mean what it used to mean? Apparently not if Detroit, who'll be looking for gate help this year, cut the guy.

500 for Sheffield (or for that matter 300 for Randy Johnson) is just a number because these guys have been carpetbaggers for much of their career and have no history with their current teams. I wouldn't buy a ticket especially to see RJ pitch this year but on the other hand, it would be cool to be there when it happens. For Sheffield, chances are pretty decent that he hits #500 in a city that he sulked his way out of some time ago.

It means something to the player and it means something (alot less than it used to) for MLB history but I doubt it would make any dent on the gate for most players (a few excluded).

I don't see how it can have any gate impact. If he hits it the first few days, there is not time to promote it and no fan connection to the player. If it takes long enought to promote it and get the fan base involved in the player- its taken to long to get there and it will be anti-climatic.Maybe if he was at 495 or something they could pull some PR out of it, but at 499 it will be tough.

I dont understand the Phillies interest. Only team I can see signing him is the Angels.
The Phils want a RH bat for the bench. However, I doubt Shef's ego will allow him to be almost strictly a PH. The Angels have too many OF/DH types. I doubt they'll make a move unless they can get rid of Matthews -- unlikely with that contract.

...especially as a pinch hitter

Sheffield to the Mets. It's probably a win-win. Sheff's on a contender in a role where he can be a PH and occasional OF. The Mets OF defense is solid enough to withstand a downgrade once or twice a week. The Mets could use another RH bat.

Can he pitch at all?

The Tigers will have to pay $13.6 million of his $14 million contract this year while the Mets get him for the major league minimum of $400,000. The Mets got him for the right price. I heard Cinn would of signed him if the Mets didn't.
