LAKE BUENA VISTA—Shelton Quarles has joined the Bucs as an NFL advance scout, three months after being released by Tampa Bay. The third-leading tackler in franchise history attended Wednesday’s practice and said he was excited about his new opportunity.

“This is big for me and big for my family,’’ said Quarles, who played 10 years for the Bucs and became the starting middle linebacker in the 2002 championship season. “For me, staying in the Tampa area and being part of the organization was a no-brainer.’’

Quarles said he had opportunities to continue his playing career with other teams but decided to retire.

“The reality is that you want to play forever, but that’s not necessarily going to be the case,’’ he said.

Coach Jon Gruden said Quarles will excel in his new role, scouting upcoming opponents.

“He’s a Buccaneer,’’ Gruden said. “His passion for the game is unparalleled. As a scout, his love of the game will really help us.’’
