Shockey Trade (1 Viewer)

Just read on the Redzone website that Shockey may have been traded to New Orleans for multiple draft picks including their 2nd rounder (40).

Anyone able to shed some light on this?

From Rotoworld:

Pro Football Weekly is hearing that the Saints and Giants may already have a deal in place that would send Jeremy Shockey to New Orleans.

PFW isn't the greatest source, but ESPN's Chris Mortensen says he's heard similar rumors. Pro Football Weekly says the deal would send "multiple picks" to New York, including the Saints' second-rounder (No. 40 overall). An NFL source tells Profootballtalk.com that Shockey hasn't heard a trade is done. Apr. 25 - 6:10 pm et

Scheffter mentioned something about a deal in the works on NFL Access tonite but nothing was definite yet.

And speaking of PFW:

SHOCKEY NOT AWARE OF TRADE

Posted by Mike Florio on April 25, 2008, 6:40 p.m.

In response to reports that a trade possibly is in place that would send tight end Jeremy Shockey from the Giants to the Saints, a league source tells us that Shockey has not been notified of the potential transaction.

It doesn’t mean that a trade won’t happen, or that a trade isn’t already in place.

And if the goal of the Giants is to keep the deal under wraps until the Saints are on the clock at No. 40, there’s no reason for either team to let Shockey in on the news. It’s well known that Shockey wants out of New York, and he reportedly has told friends that he’d welcome a trade to the Saints.

Just to reiterate, Schefter was just on Total Access and said he got a text message at noon EST saying a trade for Shockey to the Saints was a "done deal" BUT he's had on further confirmation from anyone on the matter.

FYI... officials from the Saints denied on WWL radio that a deal is done. Saints may want to see who is there at 40.

Are the Giants stupid?I'm not sure Shockey is even worth a 2nd, much less a 2nd + something else.
Not sure about that. Shockey is an uber talented two-way tight end with multiple Pro Bowls under his belt. I'm not arguing a 2nd is unrealistic, just that it's hardly unreasonable for the Giants to think he's worth more. Particularly if they're really willing to keep him in the alternative. That's the one aspect of all these trade rumors that people need to consider. If a team legitimately feels they can't keep the player in question on the roster and have a positive outcome, they HAVE to lower their asking price b/c there really isn't a viable alternative to moving him. But, if they feel keeping him is feasible for all parties, I would be more stringent in my asking price.

Shockey, when healthy, is still one of the top TEs in the league, and on a new team with a fresh start he could be top 5 again.Fixed my post since I figured out what you meant about the Giants.

Put it this way - is there a TE in the draft of Shockey's caliber? His contract will be pretty reasonable and the Saints wouldn't be on the hook for the bonus money.

Imagine the damage Colston can do with an actual NFL-caliber TE getting attention from defenses down the seam...

:scared: I like what it does for the Saints. Colston and Bush are really the only two legit receiving options they have. Still, they have one of the top passing offenses in the NFL. Sean Payton = GOOD. He knows what he's doing. And, he knows what he's doing going after Shockey.

Giants | Trade talks for Shockey stall

Fri, 25 Apr 2008 22:42:22 -0700

ESPN's John Clayton reports trade talks between the New Orleans Saints and New York Giants about Giants TE Jeremy Shockey have stalled because of the Giants' demand for more than a second-round draft pick. The Saints have been debating offering a second-round pick, but some in the organization would prefer including no more than a third-round pick, according to sources. The Giants have conducted a physical on Shockey, which could be offered to New Orleans if he is unable to make it to the Saints in time to have one.

how is shockey with run blocking or pass protection?
He's an excellent blocker. He's not as good as Jason Witten, mainly because Shockey can let his emotions take him out of a play on occasion, but the majority of snaps Shockey is far above average at the point of attack.

Maybe I'm crazy.....but if Shockey passes his physical, he's definately worth a 2nd round pick, are you kidding me. I'd bet there's very LITTLE chance that the Saints draft someone in the 2nd round and they become better than Jeremy Shockey. His value as a player has gone down not only because he got hurt, but basically the Giants won a SB without him, making people think he wasn't really needed. I don't buy that at all. The Giants played great and if he was in the game, he would have too, only making things a little easier.I'm all for getting Shockey out of the NFC East.

In terms of ability he's definitely worth a #2. Problem is he's injury-prone and has a big mouth.I'm all for giving up a #2 for him, but a #2 plus anything other than a typical 6th-7th round throw-in seems excessive.

Talks of trading for Lito Sheppard a smole screen to give the saints leverage?

I think the better trade would be getting Shockey for the Saints eventhough they need a CB in a bad way.

I think the Giants would be making a huge mistake trading Shockey.
Reese had a great draft last year(IMO) and I hope it's not arrogance that he can draft a comparable player/contributor in round 2. He was Ernie's protege for a good while so he should have enough experience to not fall into that.

In New Orleans, Shockey could become the #1 fantasy tight end next year. Not that NY is bad for his numbers. Just that NO is begging to give us a stud TE and Shockey is still one of tops in talent.

I tend to disagree here. I can argue that Shockey is one of the best TEs, but not that he will be the #1 fantasy TE. He is easily a top 5 complete TE, as he is a wonderful blocker, but there is no way I see him catching 90 balls for 1000+.

No, but he could catch 15 TDs

From Times-Pic live chat today. transcript should be available later. comment from writer jimmy smith, regarding possible FA acquisitions...

The Shockey deal, from what I'm told, is not dead. Sean Payton, apparently, is transfixed with Jeremy Shockey and it wouldn't be surprising at all if the deal is consummated in the near future, possibly before the minicamp at the end of June. Payton loves the player and believes, apparently, that he'd be a big upgrade at the position. The tight end position is important to the Saints offense as something other than another blocker, and Shockey could go a long way in improving the pass-catching aspect of that spot.
make of it what you will.
