Should 1st downs be scored and if so, how much? (1 Viewer)

Have toyed with the idea over the years of scoring fantasy points for 1st downs at some (fractional) rate.

Today setting up scoring for a new league I noticed one could score them for any position and they got 1 fp per 5 1sts.

Should 1st downs be scored and if so, how much?

Only if they are gained on a 3rd down.

IMHO, 1st downs are more important than PPR. How many times have you seen a swing pass to an RB on 3rd and 8 go for 6 yards? Yet in PPR leagues, the RB would get a point for that. Give me the same RB on 3rd and 3, rumbling for 5 yards and a 1st - he's earned his points there. In general, for scoring, I like "default" settings (at least on websites that are reputable) - as they are often "the norm" or the more balanced.

In one of my leauges, running PPFD for the first time and went for the big guns. .5 per first down across WR/RB/TE. Couldn't convince the others to let PPR slide, but thats going @ .5 as well.

based on some of the number of catches for first downs/first down catch %'s ive seen, this could lead to some uber-studs at wr and some damn good value plays. very interesting!

Compared to my other main league, the Indy WRs went up quite a bit in relation to other WRs. Collie up to WR28 from 36, Garcon up to WR 36 from 45, Wayne up to WR 3 from WR6. Marshall went up to WR7 from 8 despite losing half a point per R.

I played in a league with bonuses for first downs and it's pretty exciting. I think it was scored at 1 or 2 point. Makes drives more exciting when they aren't near the red zone.

I'd tend to look at it from a standpoint of whether the net effect on the league is a positive or negative one. I don't like RBs being so much more valuable than other positions... so if the rule further increased RB value compared to other positions I wouldn't do it. If it helped other positions compared to RB, I'd probably like it.

I'd stick to that way of looking at it and not worry about a "philosophical" look of whether it's just right that they be included or not. I think you can argue it equally well either way from that standpoint. 1st downs are important to football, but it's also true that just giving out points for the guy who picked up the first down may or may not reflect the true contribution of players towards gaining it. But back on the other side of the argument again, we already do that with TDs.

So I wouldn't say there's any compelling FF philosophical argument that they need to be included or not. I'd just focus on the effect and if that's a good or bad thing for how I want the league to be.
