Should Alex Smith had conceded the safety? (1 Viewer)

If you want to blame anyone, besides the center that is, you could blame Gore. The two Saints that were nearest to Smith ran right past him. If he would have thrown a lil block, Smith may have been able to recover the ball and make somewhat of a play out of it.

BUT, Smith did the right thing.

Lets take into consideration that Alex Smith has some decent speed for a QB.

Imagine if the center snapped the ball over P.Mannings head, there is no way Manning would be able to catch up to that ball, so that means the defense would have most likely scooped that ball up and score.

Alex Smith's speed saved them from the other team getting the touchdown.. he made the right play. Haters gonna hate.

So I have seen the replay of Alex Smith swatting the ball out of the back of the end zone on the snap over his head several times and have come to the conclusion that he should have saved the play. The ball bounced right up to him and the protection had held up very well. Nobody was within 7 feet of him and the ball. Alex could have easily picked up the ball and either took two steps and thrown the ball away or just thrown it away and taken the penalty.

Did Alex make the correct play? Probably, but it's just another example of what in my eyes is Alex just not having that IT quality for a the quarterback position. He doesn't have the will to make the play and turn a bad situation into something. That's the difference between him and Romo. Romo doesn't have more skill or ability, he just has that ability and desire to improvise. Joe Montana was in the stands. That guy didn't have the skill Alex has but he would put his career on the line to make one simple play every chance the opportunity presents itself.

Am I off here?
Yes

You're wayyyyyy off on this.
Montana simply didn't have the skill Smith has. Montana was a walk on at ND and was taken in the third round. He had an average arm. That's not a slight on Joe. Alex Smith has the toolbox. The difference was that Montana was amongst the smartest and accurate QB's ever. He was perfect for the offense he was in.
this has got to be fishing...or your an idiot. Either way, your wrong. Joe Montana is one of the 5 most accurate QBs in NFL history. He is top 5 in QB leadership skills. I'd put him top 5 in pocket awareness too. Who cares where he was drafted? By that assumption Brady doesn't have the skills, but Russell and Leaf did. Heck, Jordan should have quit basketball when he didn't make his high school team.

And no, Smith should not have tried to save that play. Proving even more your an idiot.
I gave Montana accuracy. In case you didn't get my point I'll spell it out for you. Montana wasn't a physicaly skilled QB. I thought it was pretty obvious considering I was praising Montana's mental game saying that's what made him special. Smith has all the physical tools. Tools that Joe did not have. So in short, you called me an idiot and then backed it by practically quoting everything I said about Joe. Keep it classy San Diego. LOL.

Speaking as a 49er fan, watching the game last night about 5 of us jumped up from our seats on the botched snap and in unison said "Hit it out of the back of the end zone Alex" and when he did all in unison again said "Good job Alex".I think if Brady or Manning had done this that this would have ever even been brought up, it was the smart play, the only smart play. Weird topic and seems out of place on a football board where people are supposed to know their stuff.
Come on man. You are masking an isult at me. Well, at least you didn't do your normal thing and overtly insult people. You think I don't know what the proper play to do is? I even said that they teach us to hit it out since pop warner. The whole point of the thread was that under THAT CIRCUMSTANCE I was debating if he could have saved the play. The circumstances seemed to allow time to work through it. Lots of time and a perfect bounce.

This is incorrect
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Joe_Montana#Early_lifeWhy would anyone make up something that is so easily disproved?

Kind of hurting in the cred department today, ROFLCOPTERS.

Although I guess you could argue its consistent with the remainder of the post.
Ouch. Has anyone just wished they never opened up their laptop. I wish I could blame it on alcohol but it was 10 am when I posted this thread :lmao:

Actually Smith did commit a penalty on the play:

Penalty on SF-A.Smith, Illegal Bat, declined.

It was 100% the right play, the NO Def was within a few feet of Smith when he hit the ball.

If he had manged to pick it up, he absolutely would have been sacked, maybe injured, and maybe fumbled.

This play showed good snap decision making, not the opposite.

Joe Walsh always said it was Montana's footwork that stood out for him. That being said, the Wiki on Phil Simms says the 49ers were targeting Simms but the Giants took him before they could.
