I'm looking at Sirius/XM, but this would apply to terrestrial radio stations that are playing music too.  It's nice to hear if they're talking about upcoming shows or anecdotes about the bands or songs, but I find the other off-topic jibber-jabber quite annoying.

Some are good at it but they do it in low doses, others are terrible and can cause one to react negatively as soon as they utter a word.

I like the former group enough that overall I'm good with it.

I barely listen to terrestrial radio anymore, unless it’s around Christmas time, mostly it’s podcasts or my own music playlist instead. I don’t mind the banter, it breaks up the motonony of hearing the same 8 songs on repeat.

I dig the retro stations, esp the ones with the old MTV VJ's where they give some background stories and experiences from back in the day.
overall, I dont mind it in small doses

I'm listening to Lithium and Octane in the car now.  Both DJs told me:

- it's July 5th

- it's the day after independence day

- they bet a lot of people are hungover

- they themselves are hungover

- they have a lot of great music coming up.

I'm sorry, but if that's what you're bringing to the table, you need to be replaced by AI.

You say this as if Sirius/XM has a lot of banter on its channels.  When I first read your thread title, I was going to reply that Sirius/XM is where to go if you don't want a lot of banter.  I listen to Classic Vinyl (channel 26) a lot...  very little banter on that channel and what there is is usually related directly to an upcoming song.  Maybe your mileage varies by channel you listen to?

I thought I would like Sirius XM, but I dropped it at the first available opportunity because of the DJs and ads.  If they just played music, I would probably have subscribed.  The verbal diarrhea is exactly why I ran the other way.

Not a big deal either way.  It can be annoying at times but usually I’ll just flip the channel

I do like when they tell me what’s coming up

also on a lot of long trips I’ll just stream my Amazon music

See my post just above yours.  I agree that's it's channel by channel and why I also mentioned I don't mind a tidbit about the band or song.  That's not the issue, imo.

If I didn't have a lifetime subscription I'd be out too.  I can't even look forward to Stern anymore.

This.

The one thing that is irritating and when they “tease” something that is coming up later. A huge percentage of listeners only listen while in the car. Not many people are hanging around to hear the upcoming story.

Between the ads and the inane banter and the same handful of songs I would rather just pop one of my old cds in while driving. Oddly enough, sports (actual games) on the car radio I have no problem with.

comedy legend Albert Brooks said it best in a bit on rampmasters, "I just read a list of the worst kinds of human beings in the world. First was incurable lepers, next DJs, then curable lepers..."
Lawyers not being on the bottom of his list reveals its flaws.

Octane can be good (a couple of the DJs are actually funny or knowledgeable), but can't stand Madison on Lithium and AltNation. She has a grating voice and is nasty on Twitter. You can also just use their top hits station on the Sirius app.
