Should the 'Skins retire Taylors #? (1 Viewer)

Me and my buddies got into a pretty heated discussion about this... figure it would be a pretty interesting thread to open. I know that hasn't been the case with other players such as darrent williams or Nash... I don't know for some reason I just feel Taylor's # should be retired for the redskins.. any thoughts?

Why does everyone forget Marquise Hill?Athletically Sean was considerably better at his position than these 3 but none have had their jersey's retired after their deaths. I think something like a memorial is more appropriate and retired jerseys are for field accomplishments.

The Redskins SHOULD not have to do anything. Seriously, events like this are very tough to handle and I hate when people critisize those trying their best to handle the very very difficult situation or tell them what they SHOULD be doing.

It would be a nice gesture. They CAN do it if they want. Its up to them. Lets let them decide how they want to honor their falllen teamate and not tell them how we think they should.

There are plenty of ways to honor Taylor without retiring his number.

The problem with football is that you only have so many jersey numbers for each position and you can start getting into a bind when you start retiring too many numbers. I don't know how many numbers the Redskins have retired but it can become an issue at some point.

That is one of the reasons the Steelers have only officially retired one number (#70, Ernie Stautner) although there are some they have not assigned since that player retired (12- Bradshaw, 32- Harris, 58-Lambert, 75-Greene).

Retiring his Jeresy is a bit Much... As sad and terrible as this whole thing is; Sean only played like 3 and a half yrs. Like Saber pointed out, other young players didn't get their #s retired when their lives ended... now if he was at the tail end of his career and he had a monsterous career... then I would say yes. When Thomas (KC) died in that Car crash... was his Jeresy Retired??? I think it was.

No way. Sure, honor him, donate to his family, but c'mon.....retire his number? Why not put him in the Hall of Fame too......

they should unoffically retire it. Just dont let anyone wear 21. I think a whole cermony thing at least this soon wouldnt be right.

In terms of a similar situation, in hockey, Vlad Konstantinov didnt die, but had severe brain damage due to a car accident, no one has worn #16 since 1997.

I suppose you guys are right... sorry assani i think you took it the wrong way... perhaps i worded it wrong... i don't think they SHOULD... i dont think their disrespecting him by not... i was just a huge sean taylor fan... well still am... i met him a couple of times and he was a nice guy too.. my friends used to get mad at me bc we're all huge giants fans and there i am cheering on a player that plays for one of our rivals. oh well... rip 21

Another NO from me. I am really not a big fan of retiring jerseys. The way some teams do this when I am 80 years old players will be wearing jersey # 136.

Definitely not, unless the reasons for retiring a persons number have changed over the years and I was not aware of it.

I believe the skins have only retired Sammy Baugh's number #33. Since then, they only unofficially retire numbers, which I assume is what they will do in this case. There is no unofficial number retirement ceremony.

I would guess that that's what they'll do. I think Jurgensen's number is handled the same way. And I'm fine with that. It's a Redskin team and fan issue, not a league issue.

Well those really have different criteria. Getting into the Hall of Fame is based (mostly) on the body of a player's work over a fairly long career. Taylor didn't play well enough long enough to be considered for that, obviously.Retiring a number is based on what a player meant to the team and their fans.

The only professional sports team I know of that retired a number due to the death of a player with little experience was baseball's Houston Astros who retired Jim Umbricht's number. Umbricht played for the team in the 1962 and 1963 seasons.

Here's what wikipedia says about him:

Code:
James Umbricht (September 17, 1930 in Chicago, Illinois - April 8, 1964 in Houston, Texas) was an American pitcher in Major League Baseball. He was an effective righthanded relief pitcher who appeared in 88 games for the Pittsburgh Pirates (1959-61) and Houston Colt .45s (1962-63) but became known throughout baseball and the Houston area for his battle against cancer.Umbricht underwent surgery to remove a tumor from his leg in March 1963 but was able to return to the Colt .45s to post a 4-3 won/loss record and a solid 2.61 earned run average in 35 games that season. He would play his final game, September 29, 1963, the final day of the regular season. Umbricht succumbed to lymphoma on the eve of the 1964 campaign, at the age of 33. His uniform number (32) was immediately retired by the club (known since 1965 as the Houston Astros) and the Astros' MVP award was named in his honor. Over his career, Umbricht, a graduate of the University of Georgia, won 9 games and lost 5 with an ERA of 3.06.

I say an emphatic no.

Count me as one person who, while sympathetic to and angered about another wasted, early loss of life, is a bit baffled by the "extreme honoring" going on with Taylor. I didn't think the NFL should have IMMEDIATELY mandated that ALL teams wear his #21. Hell, Pats DL Marquise Hill drowns while saving another person from drowning and I don't see the league wearing his number. Damien Nash dies of cardiac arrest after playing a charity basketball game and no one outside of Denver is wearing his number. Pat Tillman died serving his country and no one outside Arizona wears his number.

If I'm being frank, and I realize this isn't the PC or acceptable thing to say, and Skins fans especially could be pissed at me because, I admit, I don't know how much he might have meant to their team and community, but so be it -- I just don't think Taylor, while his murder was tragic, had earned such nationwide post-mortem adulation and honor based on the kind of life he led up to that murder. Yes, he was reportedly turning his life around. Yes, he had by all accounts been a good kid on the right path over the last year or two, and as a father of a baby daughter myself it kills me to think that that little girl will never know her father who (likely) would have been a good dad, role model and provider based on how he had reportedly gotten his head together....still, I've been a little confused and honestly fascinated by how the league and nation has reacted (or overreacted, I think) to his murder, especially in light of the fact that dozens of young, black males die the way he did every single day in inner cities, and you don't see media whores like Jesse Jackson at their funerals.

Good God, people, enough with the Sean Taylor honoring. He was a to-be-great player whose career was tragically cut short by some #-hole with a gun and his buddies. They've honored him enough. Let's move on.

I find it ridiculous that they named their MVP award after a guy who was never an MVP. It's like naming the Lombardi Trophy the Abe Gibron Trophy. That smells like a young franchise trying to manufacture some history and heritage for itself. It's not genuine.

The lowpoint of the Redskins franchise was when Spurrier brought in Shane Matthews to QB, and then allowed him to become the first Redskin since Sonny to wear #9. On the bright side, he was sacked so many times, that he actually appeared to be wearing the #6 more often than 9. But if Sonny or Riggins or Monk or Green don't have their numbers retired, then neither does Taylor.

No! It was a tragic event. That should not have anything to do with retiring a players number.

The Reds retired Fred Hutchinson's number 1 when he died as the manager.
