Should the U.S. boycott the winter Olympics in China? Update: Diplomatic boycott is on. (1 Viewer)

Tom Cotton and Nikki Haley among others have called for totally banning of the Olympics not just the diplomatic banning that Biden is mulling.

 
What is the official reasoning for the boycott? I don't care enough to look it up because I'm sure it's dumb.

So not enough to raise a stink in the global community or stop American businesses from taking Chinese money but enough to make a token gesture of not going to the Winter Olympics. 

I'm being cynical since this has been going on for awhile now and nothing has been done. Maybe something good will come from it but I don't have any faith in that.

Diplomatic boycott seems toothless.  All it does is cost Kamala Harris a trip to the Olympics

It is mostly ceremonial. It will generate a conversation which is all this would do - much like if we didn’t send our athletes who are then punished.

What Biden is considering seems appropriate. 

If he didn’t send the athletes I think the story would be that he is weak, he’s Jimmy Carter etc, from  Fox and the previous guy’s crew.

If he backed it up with actual sanctions and trade embargos, then he could avoid the weak talk. This is just for show.

I'd definitely not want to sign up for that at the moment. But yes this is ceremonial, it is just the Olympics after all.

You can’t  trust Joe to go after his European Tour bathroom issues

No way they want Harris to be a spokesperson for the country 

Jill Biden can’t go because who will run the country?

This “diplomatic boycott” is probably a smokescreen 

 
Yes we should.  We should be doing everything we can to marginalize China and it's rise to global supremacy

I can’t believe most countries even want to host.  So many of them lose a ton of money building stadiums they will never use again.

 
There's also the Peng Shuai situation.

Just tell all the other countires if they want to compete against the best, all our athletes will be shreading at Vail, Deer Valley and Park City. We will have hotel rooms reserved for you.

I think the Democrats should stop worrying about what the GOP and its sycophants say because they are going to say it anyway. Oh no we can't run Bernie they'll call him a socialist. Run Biden and they call him a socialist. 

As for the boycott thing seems like kabuki. We aren't going to do anything real about the issue. We know it and they know it.

 
How is this different from Russia expelling a few of our diplomats us us to them?  Or arresting a suspected spy that later gets returned to China?

I don't see what is accomplished.  Either begin moving all manufacturing back home so as to totally cut ties with them or cede you are too weak to do so.  Clue - we won't be moving manufacturing back any time soon.

How so? This is exactly what they said and then Biden was laughably attacked with that very same charge. Oh and by the way given the overall support for the policies Bernie runs on if he's a socialist he has a lot of company in this country.

For this issue there are prominent Republicans asking for outright ban of the Olympics so this isn’t really a partisan issue per se.

I think this is an adequate response. Let athletes go compete, don’t send a bunch of politicians, dignitaries there.

Completely boycotting the Olympics does nothing, sending Kamala Harris to sit in a suite with Chinese officials does nothing. 

Let the athletes do their thing, don’t send diplomats, politicians. This is the correct choice IMO. 

 
China is heading back towards their old anti-capitolist authoritarian regime.  Feel bad for the Chinese people.  This is the far-left AOC-wing vision of progress where equity trumps equality.
