Sidney Rice to be activated off PUP list... (1 Viewer)

The Minnesota Vikings plan to activate WR Sidney Rice (hip) off of the PUP by the Nov. 9 deadline, reports ESPN's Adam Schefter. Rice, however, is still at least a couple of weeks away from being able to play.
He is probably not going to play until most teams are heading into their final weeks or even some teams may be in the first round of playoffs. Still, he might be worth a flier and is most likely on every WW. Anyone pulling the trigger on him to stash away till end of year?

Considering picking him up, was cut in my league early in the season.

When is he expected back? Yahoo speculates he could be back around WK10 according to their projections. With Moss out of the picture that helps his stock significantly if he can come back healthy and perform at a high level.

Too many undermining questions to be a lottery ticket I will target. If he's into Week 11 before he sees the field, I would want to see production before starting him. It's unlikely he hits the ground running in late 2009 form and then there's the whole Favre thing. How healthy is he? etc etc.

I don't think his 2010 fantasy production "window" is going to open very wide or for very long.

Contrast that with VJax - fresh, healthy, great QB/offense already. That's a lottery ticket I would buy.

Those enough fortunate enough not to need him until Week 14 should get at least 2 weeks to see what you can expect when it matters most. With Moss and Britt as my WR1/2, I have no choice but to hold this lotto ticket.

I think Rice is an attractive option to teams that seem like a 'sure thing' to get to the playoffs. As you state above, he is reasonably expected to play week 11. If you give him 2 weeks to get acclimated, that leaves the fantasy playoffs as an opportune time to get him in your lineup - if he is producing. If you need production out of the wr position immediately, than he isn't a viable option, I would agree.

Off PUP list now.

Vikings’ Rice off PUP list, returns to practice

EDEN PRAIRIE, Minn. (AP)—Minnesota Vikings wide receiver Sidney Rice(notes) has been taken off the physically unable to perform list, allowing his return to practice.

Coach Brad Childress announced Wednesday the decision regarding Rice, who has been recovering from hip surgery in late August. The Vikings have up to three weeks to evaluate his progress before determining whether to put him on the active 53-man roster.

Childress said Rice would run with the scout team in Wednesday’s practice. His return has become even more important to the Vikings following the surprise release of Randy Moss(notes) this week.

Rice had a breakout season in 2009 with 1,312 yards and eight touchdowns on 83 receptions. This is his fourth year in the NFL.

Debating between Rice and Crabtree. Starting to lean toward Rice considering word out of Minnesota is he's looking good in practice today.

Where did you hear "he's looking good in practice today"? Dude just strapped his pads on about 3 hours ago.

How crazy would it be if he played this week? That would make Chilly's decision look a lot less dumb (meaning criminally dumb rather than criminally insane dumb)

Picked him up in 3 leagues, let's see what happens! With Moss gone maybe they rush him back a little quicker.

Sidney Rice (hip) running full speed, cutting

Rice

Sidney Rice (hip) was able to run at full speed and make cuts in his return to Vikings practice Wednesday.

Rice "didn't appear hindered by the injury," according to the Minneapolis Star-Tribune, while Jeremy Fowler of the St. Paul Pioneer Press confirms that what Rice was able to do "looked encouraging," even if he's still "rusty, as expected." Rice isn't likely to play in Week 9, but could return for Week 10. Nov. 3 - 2:30 pm et

Id take the guy who didn't just get completely screwed by his organization. Something tells me VJax will be trying just hard enough to let other teams know he still has it.

I agree. That is what makes him valuable. Throw in Phillip Rivers and a team that is likely going to need a win every week to get to the playoffs, and suddenly you have the perfect storm for VJax to be a lottery ticket for some lucky fantasy owners.

I'm not sure you read Clifford's post the way it was intended.

With today's development, one point in favour of Rice is that you may find out what you can expect from him this year before VJax even sees the field.

If you have the room you would be foolish to not grab Rice.

Where is the downside? He was a top ten wr last year. With Moss gone Rice could put some numbers up and sooner than you may think.
