Signaling other cars that police are near (1 Viewer)

I always flick my lights anytime I see a cop set up to trap folks for speeding.  I had someone save me today near my house and I returned the favor.  It really is one of the tools to damn the man.

I do it all the time.  Keep in mind,  though,  that another cop a bit further down the road could give you a ticket for flashing your brights unnecessarily.

Flashing your lights is an easy way to get pulled over, don't ever let a cop catch you doing that.

I regularly drive a stretch of highway through the desert that is about 100 miles with nothing but tumbleweeds and cops trying to make some cash. It puts a smile on my face when 10-20 vehicles are all flashing their lights trying to help a brother out. Sometimes it worries me though, I start wondering if my car is on fire or I have a coyote (animal, not illegal) stuck to my grill.

I flash my brights quite often too. It's a lost art. It had been probably five years since I'd seen the favor returned until very recently once or twice.

Even most truckers don't get it now and they were always the last bastion. Aren't parents teaching their kids? I can only do my part. Glad to see you guys are too (except the worry wart).

I'm curious: what is the ticket for?

HE SAID YOU COULD GET A TICKET FOR UNNECESSARILY FLASHING YOUR BRIGHTS.

(seriously, my best friend got one, took it court, got laughed at by the judge, and had to pay). I do think there was Supreme Court ruling that said this was freedom of speech, but that may have been for turning lights off and on - shining the hi-beams, even momentarily is considered unsafe, apparently.

Two days ago I was rushing home and a mack truck was following me.  I get up to the car in front because of traffic.  Didn't notice at first, then saw it.  Nc plate Shpxxx. It was an unmarked.  Shp. State highway patrol.  When it opened up I went to the right lane.  The semi decided to pass me.  I held out an open hand the an O, then pointed at the trooper car.  Did that twice and he slowed down.  The guy speeding around us got pulled over.

Always do it myself, and appreciate when others do it for me, though it does seem to be more rare these days.  I'll do it even more often when I think the trap is especially mean - like near the bottom of a hill.

I also do it when there's a deer near the road. I figure that's what my excuse will be if I ever get pulled over for flashing my lights.

Highway=yes, I do this.

My neighborhood=I hope you get the biggest ticket you can-especially the fools that fly through school zones.

Yup. Back when I was a gangbanger, I would flash my beams, and if they flashed back, I would chase them down and bludgeon them with jumper cables.

Don't gangbangers shoot when flashed? Is that still a thing?

I mean the thugs with guns....not the sexual people shooting loads.

I don't do it consistently, but I will sometimes do it to warn for cops, for deer, for an accident up ahead etc.

I never knew that you could get a ticket for flashing your highbeams. That's surprising to me. I would think that alerting people to something out of the ordinary up ahead would be a good thing.

It varies by state and seems like it is becoming legal to do it more so now.

However, i'm sure if a cop pulls you over for this he can make up some other BS excuse to give you a ticket for

Dip####, it works both ways.  If everyone looks out for each other you are just as likely to avoid a ticket as someone you help out.
Why would I get a ticket for obeying the law? I spend way more time wishing these dooshes driving 80 mph and cutting in and out of traffic would get busted than I do wanting to help them avoid doing so.

I think its a state by state thing, some illegal some not. Hindering a police investigation or having your high beams on with oncoming traffic.

I do do it often enough if I pass deer on the side of the road. I just use it as a universal "slow down" signal. If they think it's the cops, that's fine with me as long as they don't take the corner and smash into a deer crossing the road.

That is what I most often do, is flash lights to indicate a dangerous situation ahead.  Could be a deer or an accident or some obsticle in the road.  Would that be illegal too?

"Look out! Object in road ahead!"

Crushed soda can.
:)    I generally pay attention to the cop alerts, I'd say they are valid 50%+ (they dont just sit there forever).  The car on side of road alert is the most annoying, who gives a flying ####

My work commute takes me through a mountain pass that has a number of places for speed traps and a few of my co-workers have been ticketed in recent years, so I'll flash my lights to warn others if I can.  Other cars have done it for me.  From what I found online, it seems like it might be illegal to do here in California on highways/freeways with 2 or more lanes on a side, but that would not apply on the route I typically take to work.

When I was a teenager I used to speed and drive like a moron. Used to flash my lights to warn people about cops. Now I don't speed and I don't bother flashing my lights. I would really prefer if people didn't speed. Would also prefer if people didn't drive around with POS cars with bald tires while texting or playing clash of clans.

That would be everybody looking out for each other. So get off my lawn and slow down.
