Simeon Rice to the Broncos (1 Viewer)

You can officially upgrade the Denver D into the top 8. After a complete overhaul of the defensive line, it looks like Jim Bates vaunted defense has the pieces to give opposing QB's a reason to lose a little sleep now. The addition of Simeon Rice along with the rookie draftees of 2007, Denver should be able to increase their sack totals over last year.

A good signing, but I wouldn't bump Denver's D up too far unless we see he's regained his old form.

Then again, FBG already has it at 9

Top 5 is not out of the question if like you say, some of the old timers regain form and the youngsters don't hit the wall around week 12.

Free-agent defensive end Simeon Rice, one of the few potential impact players remaining in free agency and a guy who enters 2007 as the second-leading active sacker in the league, signed with the Denver Broncos on Monday evening.

Rice, 33, arrived in Denver on Sunday, dined that evening with team officials, and then chose the Broncos' contract offer over the proposal the St. Louis Rams submitted.

According to ESPN.com's John Clayton, Rice's deal with the Broncos is for one year and $3 million. He accepted the terms once the Broncos decided to guarantee the contract. Along with the $3 million, the Broncos gave him the chance to make another $1 million through performance-based incentives.

The addition of Rice, who was released by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers at the outset of training camp in July, continues the near-wholesale overhaul of the Denver defensive line. Even before adding Rice, the Broncos were projected to have four new defensive line starters. Only two of the defensive linemen who dressed for Denver in the 2006 season opener remain on the active roster.

"He's a big-time pass rusher, he's been in the league for a while, he's got a lot of talent," Broncos coach Mike Shanahan said, according to The Associated Press.

It is not yet known if Rice will play in Denver's season opener at Buffalo on Sunday, but he left little doubt that he wants to suit up.

"I'm anxious to play," Rice said. "It's what I do. I'm not [accustomed] to sitting around."

An 11-year veteran, Rice should provide the Broncos with the upfield pass-rush threat the team has lacked for the last several seasons. Denver had 35 sacks in 2006, slightly below the NFL average of 36.3, and its top sacker was then-rookie Elvis Dumervil, with 8½. The Broncos haven't had a player with double-digit sacks since end Reggie Hayward recorded 10½ in 2004.

Rice has posted eight seasons with 10 or more sacks and only four players in league history have more double-digit sack years than him. He had a string of five straight double-digit sack seasons snapped last year, when a shoulder injury limited him to eight appearances and two sacks, both career lows. Rice is 13th on the all-time sack list and needs eight to move into the top 10 in NFL history.

"He's a teammate who I loved playing with and one of the great pass rushers of all-time. So, we'd be -- anyone would be -- fortunate to get him,'' Broncos defensive back John Lynch said, according to AP.

There have been questions since Rice's release about the status of his left shoulder, which required surgery in the offseason, and most teams with whom he visited administered a physical examination. The Rams even put Rice through a short workout of sorts, which included a weightlifting session.

Rice also visited with the New York Giants and Tennessee Titans after his release.

Before the shoulder injury, Rice never missed a game because of injury in his first 10 NFL seasons. The former University of Illinois star has played in 166 games, 160 as a starter, and has 460 tackles, 35 forced fumbles, eight recoveries, five interceptions and 51 pass deflections.

He was a first-round pick of the Arizona Cardinals in 1996, then signed with the Bucs as an unrestricted free agent in 2001.

Rice's departure from Tampa Bay was a controversial one. Team officials allowed him to report to camp, then announced he had failed his physical exam. Rice insisted the divorce from the Bucs, where he was scheduled to have a base salary of $7.25 million in 2007 and a salary cap charge of more than $10 million, was financially motivated.

The release came, Rice said, after he rejected a proposed salary reduction of $2.5 million.

"Everybody knows it was a money thing," Rice said.

Rice might not start this week at Buffalo, but should move quickly onto the first team, subsequently moving Dumervil back to his pass-rushing specialist role.

I agree because I think Dre' Blye is a huge upgrade over the CB2 last season. If I were a DEN fan I'd have some concern over them stopping the run though. The additions of Blye and Rice are both legit difference makers but not sure if they'll help much vs the run and those S's are just getting too old to stop the long runs. I was very surprised they showed no interest in Trotter as a possible two down LB or reserve. After losing Al Wilson/Warrick Holdman and having to lineup against Tomlinson/Johnson twice each, JAX, Addai, Parker and MIN this year I can't help but wonder if they get pounded on the ground this year.

Simeon Rice is one of the worst run-stopping DEs in the entire NFL. I'd rather see Dumerville with the 1st team and Rice as a passrushing specialist, personally. Also, while I think Rice is one of the biggest one-trick-ponies in the league, signing him for just $3 million- ESPECIALLY if he's close to 100%- is an absolute steal.

Rice will help out the Broncos much more than he would have the Rams. Good signing for the Broncos.

Agreed, and I'll bet it's less than Rice could have made if he was just willing to take a pay cut to remain in TB.Are you at all concerned about the run stopping ability of the broncos this year, SSOG? Their first string defense wasn't exactly a juggernaut in the pre-season and while I think they should be much improved vs the pass it seems based on their schedule their run D will be tested.

He's a better run stopper then people give him credit for. Part of the problem people have is that he is so aggressive rushing the passer, well that fits perfectly with Bates scheme where the DE is suppose to get upfield.

It was a paycut. In Tampa, Rice would have made $4.75 million (after the paycut), and still had additional years left on the contract (although he was likely to be cut). In Denver, Rice is making $3 million, with incentives that could bump it up to $4 million if all goes well. Rice was also reportedly demanding a multi-year contract while a free agent, which obviously didn't happen. Basically, Rice dramatically overestimated his market value. The one concession he was able to get from Denver was that they agreed to have him on their roster on opening day, which guarantees his salary for this season.I'm starting to get a little concerned about the run stopping, although I'm trying to be reasonable about it, since it IS still just the preseason. Still, the offense should be able to stake them to some leads, and Shanahan is the biggest front-runner in the NFL (no other coach in the league can touch his first-quarter scoring differential), so hopefully the Broncos will be able to take a lot of runs out of their opponents' playbooks. Also, a lot of their run defense problems seem to result in the defense spending too much time thinking and not enough time reacting. I am optimistic that as Williams gets more comfortable with his new position and the defense gets more familiar with their responsibilities, Denver's run defense will improve. I have a lot of faith in Bates, who has really been a miracle worker so far in his NFL career.

I'm optimistic as well but I believe that it will be later rather than sooner. I think DJ will figure out the mike backer spot, but I think he'll need some time to adjust. The few times I saw him in preseason he was constantly overpursuing. The O-Line scares me more than anything else with Hamilton being out till who knows when.

Agreed. I said all offseason that they were one of the deepest units in the league, but they've needed every bit of that depth and then some. Again, it's still too early for me to predict their demise, as Dennison has earned the benefit of the doubt at this point, but I sure hope they get something going in a hurry.

I don't know if I see him playing as a 3 down player. I could see him being more as a situational player. Plus the experience he can pass on to our younger guys and rookies is worth the money right there.

I think Dumervil looks like a better all-around player than I originally gave him credit for and I was looking forward to seeing whether he'd hold up over 40-50 snaps a game. I still like Tim Crowder an awful lot -- not the prototypical right end, but he was looking like one of those rare well-rounded rookie ends that are ready immediately before the ankle injury.

Rice may not contribute that much. He wasn't himself before the shoulder issue early in 2006.

Okay, am I crazy or did NFL radio report him being signed by the Rams last week?
I think he failed his physical in STL.
Nope, they were still trying to sign him as far as I know.
Right...I don't know where I got that from...for some reason, it stuck in my head that he'd failed his physical... :bag:
I remember two other teams checked him out (one was Tennessee, and I'm not sure who the other was) and tried to sign him, but then walked away from the table and cited Rice's health as the reason why. I'm not too concerned, because they obviously thought he was healthy enough to try to sign him in the first place- I think they only raised the health issue when it was clear they weren't going to get him for what they originally thought they might, just to have an excuse to walk away from negotiations without upsetting their fans.
