Simplisafe Security System (1 Viewer)

So just reading their stuff they are being a little cute with some claims. Almost every alarm these days has cellular connectivity for example. And battery backup. And smashing the control panel doesn't stop any but the very worst systems. Still it looks interesting. I would say motion detectors do need some thought put into them as to placement and what should trigger them. Also this won't connect to any of the new home automation stuff out there or any camera systems as far as I can tell. Still with all that it looks pretty simple to put up and program. And it seems people like what they get from the system based on the reviews I have seen.

Had a door-to-door guy from Vivint yesterday. Very cool system, great looking app. Nice thing about their offer is they will cover most of the equipment if you have good credit. Extra cameras and light switches you have to buy yourself. $69.99/month but they say you will cover most of the difference in electrical savings and homeowners insurance. I was hoping to be able to get rid of the POTS that I have to have with ADT, but I think that with Verizon FiOS and their bundles, I wont save enough to cover a move.

Just need to check numbers to be able to sell it too my budget-tight CPA wife.

Installed a basic system for a friend. Very easy, took like 10 mins. It’s alright. A step down from real systems, but a suitable starter alarm.

I've had Simplisafe since about 2011.  It is very easy to install, generally reliable, and very cost effective.  I do layer it with Blink and Wyze cameras.  The biggest issue I've had over the years is that the cellular modem will occasionally lose connection. On one occasion, relocating the base station solved it and on another occasion, they had to send me a new unit.  It was way out of warranty but they still took care of it. I only use motion sensors with it and they have been solid.  I do wish it were more of an open platform for integration purposes but I have been able to hack together some things with IFTT.  I can't send commands to Simplisafe (arm when both phones leave the house for example) but I can send commands to other devices based on Simplisafe arming/disarming/alarm since it sends notifications through e-mail (arm Blink cameras when Simplisafe is armed, strobe all lights in lower level of house at brightest setting when in alarm).

Overall its been a great value but the platform may be getting a bit long in the tooth and needs better integration.  Still a great value though.

Got a decent sized system for the townhouse my parent's bought as a 2nd home up near us in NJ.

2 motion sensors, 14 entry sensors, some other stuff.

Super easy to install.  I went the extra mile to use screws vs. the double-sided tape just for longevity, and even with that, it didn't take me more than 2 hours.  Set-up was easy.  Been reliable as well.  One false alarm that I think was caused by the position of a motion detector.  The "new" design looks a little sleeker.

I currently have an old-school Honeywell system.  When it dies, I'll switch to Simplisafe too most likely.

The biggest problem in my area is stuff being stolen outside the home. From the back deck and from the cars on the driveway. So basically just kids. I'm not seeing options for outside.

I bet even a fake camera with a red LED on it would cut down on that.  They'll move on to easier targets.

Since this post, I have switched from ADT to Xfinity. I moved everything else from FIOS to Xfinity, so I was able to bundle everything and get a discount. I don't have any cameras, but I have the ability to turn it on and off from my phone and things like that. Been very happy with it and the ~$35/month I pay for it.
