Single Season Passing Record? (1 Viewer)

Its not much of a record anymore with the latest passing rules and the no huddle offensive that bypasses the rules put in place to allow the defenses to reset. I expect it will very be easily be broken by several QBs this year and maybe 10 next year. 6000-6500 yds is a more realistic record. 5000 will just be the standard for good QBs going forward just like 3000 and 4000 used to be. Its not a good measure of a QB anymore - its just an indication of a change in the rules.

I'll take the under on Brady throwing for 7,520 yards.
No doubt its under... but would we be shocked at 5,500 or 6,000?
Would we be shocked if Brady threw for that many yards? Of course, that's crazy. His production will regress to the mean over the season. But Cam Newton has a legit shot at breaking the record. He looks like the real deal.
I have to agree with this... I definitely think Brady, Brees, Rivers, and Newton have a chancethe first three for the obvious reasons...

Cam Newton because simply this.. in the two games of his career he has thrown for over 400 yds against a suspect defense and against one of the best defenses in the league... Now i know, i know, he is a rookie and he will have bad games sure.. but from everything we have seen so far he is in the perfect situation to break this record.. he has no running game, a horrific defense.. a team that is going to play from behind all season long... a pretty good group of play makers on offense, and the ability to take the game over single handedly and make big plays.. he has a huge arm.. and most importantly the coaches already trust him and put the ball in his hands (which i think says leaps and bounds about the kid)

Now Dan Marino broke the record in his second season.. and I imagine he did this with a very similar situation... now I am not saying Cam Newton is the next Marino or any of that nonsense.. i mean he has only played two games and he hasn't led his team to victory on either one... i am simply saying that anything is possible given the right circumstances.. especially given a "freak athlete" like Cam Newton... you never know

lets see what he does in week 3 and than we can talk more about this potential hah

I don't think 5,000 is going to be the standard for good qbs any time soon.... even in the next 10 years. 6500 would be insane.

To make this fair contest, someone needs to tear Brady's achilles and make him play the remaining games wearing a massive boot that limits his mobility to that of geriatric center patient. Then see if he can do what Marino did.
Just curious, how do you assess Marino not being able to surpass his own record with two healthy feet all those years?

Updated Week 3 Passing Yards Pace:

Brady: 7077

Brees: 5648

Newton: 5397

Rivers: 5221

Stafford: 5210

Ben: 5024

Hassle: 4970.

These should continue to drop and work themselves out.

How did Romo's change?
Used his avg/game per nfl.com and multiplied by 16 for this weeks. Not sure why its 4 off. Either way, he's not going to make it.

Hmmm. I'd like to try and answer this, but I'm not sure I know what you are asking. Are you looking for me to comment on why Marino never bested his own mark during the late 80's and early 90's?He led the league in passing 3 of the 4 years following the record setting year, but the bar was so high, it was impossible for him to get to that plateau again. I mean, 9.0 YPA on over 550 attempts? That's unreal. Nobody in that era even came close. Favre's best year was 7.7, Warren Moon topped out at 8.0 in 1990.The only guys in his era who ever got into that range for a season YPA mark were Lynn Dickey, Boomer Esiason, Montana once and Steve Young once, and none of them even came close to 5,000. From about '93 on, Marino was too banged up to ever come close again.

Updated after week 12:

Brees: 5366

Brady: 5275

Rodgers: 5054

Eli: 4884

Rivers: 4670

Looks like all three could do it. If Eli breaks it I may never watch football again.

It will be interesting to see what role, if any, the weather will affect them in the next 5 games. Both Brady and Rodgers next 5 are all outdoors in cold weather climates. 4 out of 5 for Brees are domes and the outdoor game is in Tenn in 2 weeks.

Well, Brady's done fine in the snow before. As a Titans fan, how could I forget the 59-0 stomping the Patriots handed us during a blizzard.Rodgers seems to be throwing more deep balls - at least when I looked a few weeks ago he was killing everyone else in Average Yards Per Completion.Brees obviously has the best chance. My guess is that they all three do it.And I really don't understand the fans who are upset about the development of the passing game. It's what makes American Football unique. Otherwise you could just watch rugby. And yell at the neighborhood kids to get off your lawn.
