Sitting at the airport bar... flight delayed... what shall we talk about (1 Viewer)

Been concerned: What American, peaceful transitions of power from one president or congressman to another can you think that came into question because of the lack of peace involved with them?

John Quincy Adam's is another.

Almost all of the expulsions from Congress happened because of the Civil War.

Seriously asking you guys. I'm okay with Am. history, but not great...
We've been blessed with peaceful transitions of power in this country.  The stability through change we have accomplished is unmatched in human empires.

But,  we still had our Civil War.  Governments of men have the failings of men.

This is what I was typing while you posted:

Okay, Lincoln was tumultuous.  As was Hayes (Google is your friend).

The main ones seem to have a theme of Civil War about them, so that's to be expected.

Hmm...not too many, huh? Pretty much peaceful transitions...

Two theoretical questions:

1) A sitting President runs for re-election and refuses to accept the vote that he lost (for whatever reason or reasons). What happens? At some point would the ... Secret Service have to physically remove him from the White House?

2) Could a sitting President postpone a national election (lets say because of alleged voter fraud) if Congress did not stand up to him? Could he be challenged in the courts? Who would have standing? And if so, how could the S.Ct. force elections?

I deeply suspected we'd been actually blessed with these transitions and surprised we don't hear more examples in our schooling. I remember the election of 1800 being a huge test that sort of set precedent, but overall...

Good job, America.

You’re going to have to put in a little more effort to kill this boredom...

“yes and” and all that
If I am right in my faith, the future is written.

If I am wrong, it could be or it could not be.

The wise person doesn't focus on fate. Fate is a crutch and an excuse. Do your best every day. Change your routine. Change your family. Change the country. Change the world.  The effort matters so much more than many understand or appreciate.

Yes. It's a testament to the founding documents that we've pulled it off so long

We can talk about the role that faith or reason plays in everyday life, something I don't quite have a good grasp of yet.

1 could almost never happen in our current structure. Even now when we all hate each other. It would take a full blown coup d'etat. At the point the Secret Service is just another armed group.

2 no.  Because of the one thing we seem to forget all the time in the structure of our system....the people have power. Only one person would have to file a complaint in federal court and the Article III courts would do their job.

Because of how we have disbursed power in this country both of your potential dystopian questions aren't very likely barring a complete breakdown of society.

ok, #### it ...

how much are they whacking you per drink?

and why in the effity eff eff is the Muppet movie so adored up 'round here?

John Tyler may be another.  Unclear how power transitioned when a President died.  William Henry Harrison's cabinet tried asserting power with the VP just an acting President, but Tyler took the oath and said that he was President now, and carried the day.

Just for the record... not my alias.

I've been detailing in the books thread my run through biographies of Presidents in consecutive order (almost to the end).  Maybe I should have just started a separate thread on it.

Long lost brother? I did that like 20 years ago.

On offdee 7 just walked in with pink hair and a boyfriend who looks like he is trying out all the anabolics for future reference.

Gotta love Jersey.

What are your thoughts on "east coast bias" and how it relates to Yankees in Canton?
I think more Yankees should be in Cooperstown. But I had no idea they put them in Canton too.

Babe Ruth was basically a left tackle though....so it makes sense.

Yeah if they are putting Yankees in Canton then that is huge bias.
