Smoltz to have shoulder surgery (1 Viewer)

wow - craptastic news.

Had Smoltz on 2 out of 3 fantasy teams.

Class act all the way and a great competitor. Throughout his career I wished the Mets had an SP with half the heart he's shown.

Hope he doesn't retire.

It's been a great career, John. Please retire and focus on your golf game.
Why would you say that? Dude can still pitch. If his surgery goes as planned and his heart is into playing, he could very easily be an effective pitcher for another 2 or 3 seasons. Hell, he's still a front-line starter at 41.

I hope Mad Dog, Smoltz, and Glavine all retire at the same time - that would make for one hell of a HoF ceremony 5 years later.

 Seriously John Smoltz is still a stud and he's in great shape. Very sad news, always a big Smoltz fan.

According to all accounts, he's been throwing through extreme pain. I'm just cynical about a 41 year old coming back from shoulder surgery. I hope I'm wrong. But I'd rather see him retire at the top of his game like you said than to have him come back and be just a mediocre pitcher.Maybe we'll find out more when Dr. Andrews opens him up. From my total non-professional viewpoint, it's a lot harder for pitchers to return from shoulder surgery, especially late in their careers.

:lmao: John Smoltz -- best postseason pitcher evah.If the shoulder is not repairable -- he, along with Maddux and Glavine retire and go into the HOF together. That is awesome. If the shoulder is repairable -- I bet he hits 200 saves. 200/200. Holy moly.Class, class guy all the way. I'd say the Braves were justified in giving up Doyle Alexander for him.

With Soriano back and Smoltz gone my question is what value does that leave Accosta? He still could log the occasional save but that seems to be his only real value right now. That and should Soriano go down again he'd be worth having.
