Detroit Tries to trade up

Target: Patrick Peterson. Too costly. Eh, I can understand that. Still warming up to Fairley, and the article's author

makes sense that if we had been able to swing it, we would have had no chance at the others we drafted.

I am guessing it would have cost the #1 next year. Just too much. Everyone needs cornerbacks, everyone. They are valuable, for sure. But a great pass rush makes corners look a lot better.

Look at what the Falcons paid for Julio, that is about what the Lions would have paid. Way way way too much.

Eh, not exactly. The Falcons were moving up from... #27 to #6? The Lions would be going from #13 to #5 to get Peterson. A hefty price, definitely, but not as much as Atlanta paid...

They have to throw a bone to the fans to explain why they refused to improve the CBs.

Fairley helps but the CB guys they have wore down or got worse.

Free agency has yet to occur. Can't judge what they did in the draft until we see who they end up with in FA. Either way, this isn't the Steelers we are talking about, it's the Lions. They need talent everywhere, and they got a lot of it in this draft.

According to Tom Kowalski, the Lions offered Arizona their 1st, 2nd & 4th rounders to move up. The Cardinals are obviously happy having Peterson, but I have to wonder if they second-guessed their decision once they saw Fairley was available at #13.

Meanwhile, Detroit entered the 2011 NFL draft with just six picks - one in each round. When the Cardinals balked at the team's offer of this year's first-, second- and fourth-round picks, there wasn't much room to move.

 that's the thing. The Falcons and Saints were in positions to move up, fill a need and have a good chance at a Super Bowl. The Lions aren't likely to get there this year, although a WC birth or even the division is within their grasp if things fall right.

If the Lions manage to win the division they are most certainly a SB contender, its not they are playing in the West.

what part of my statement are you disagreeing with?

This is a team that went O-fer sixteen and drafted back-to-back-to-back WRs in the first round (or was it four in a row?). I don't think they need to explain anything at this point. All jesting aside, it was a great move for them to stick, and I also think it was a great move for AZ to stick too. AZ plays in a much weaker division, so eventhough they may not be as close on paper as a team like the Eagles or Giants, they are in a position to add a talent like Peterson and have it make a bigger impact than other "like" teams in different divisions. The Lions need all the picks they can get as they need to add more depth to contend in their division. Sure, AZ "probably" won't go to another SB, but we all saw last year with Seattle, if you can just make the playoffs, good things can happen.

You also need to consider the fact that a pass rush like that can hide a below par secondary.
Fairley does help. The Lions traded both their 3rd and 4th rounder to move up to take Leshoure. IMO there were other big or power backs available later to team with Best. Powell, Green, Bradford come to mind. If they are looking tomake Leshoure the primary back then it makes a little more sense I suppose. Like last year there will be Wrs running by their CBs as they flail their arms in hopeless surrender. Hopefully free agency will help address this need.

Agreed. Its going to be fun to watch the Lions next season.

On one hand I agree about there being good backs available later, but you have to look at that trade-up assuming they were going to burn their 3rd rounder just TAKING one of those other backs. So, actually they sacrificed their 4th round pick in order to upgrade from one of those 2nd/3rd tier guys at RB and get LeShoure instead. Well worth it (potentially) when you think of it that way.

They used 2 draft picks from this draft to get Chris Houston and Alphonso Smith- there #1 and #3 corners last year. They did address CB with this draft.
