Other than Cardenas, ever hear of the other two? No big losses. But I would've rather dealt Cardenas for at least Burnett, but he makes waaaaaaaay too much money for this organization. As a Phillies fan...we got fleecedAnd Billy's house cleaning continues

But Blanton doesn't nearly have the baggage of Burnett (continually injured and inconsistent) or Bedard (with his recent injury, surly attitude and lack of guts).Spencer is obviously no loss. Cardenas will never play 2B for the Phillies. If he continues to hit well enough, they'd find a spot for him, but he is in single-A.Other than Cardenas, ever hear of the other two? No big losses. I am a little nervous now about how good Outman will probably be, based on the fact that Beane took him, but he is certainly not considered a can't-miss prospect.
Overall, this is a good move based on the current landscape and will be an upgrade over Eaton. I'm pleased that Gillick at least tries to do things, after the 8-year Wade regime.
Come on, he's only allowed 23 ER in his last 27 IP.Isnt his ERA going to a zillion in that park?
Plus he's only making around 4million a year. Seth Everett was discussing the Phils and their interest in Burnett, they wanted him but they couldn't agree to financial terms with Toronto. We wanted the Jays to pick up alot of his salary. So when in doubt, go cheap. Yes Burnett has been inconsistant but has 10x the talent that Blanton has, he would've instantly become our num 2, now we have another project on our hands. Oh joy.Plus Blanton is still under Phillies control for 2 more years, right? The downside is that he may eat himself out of the league http://static.flickr.com/59/175995690_826f012e2c_o.jpgBut Blanton doesn't nearly have the baggage of Burnett (continually injured and inconsistent) or Bedard (with his recent injury, surly attitude and lack of guts).Spencer is obviously no loss. Outman was a pretty high ranking lefty prospect. 23 yr old left that has had more Ks than IP throughout his minor league career. We already know that Blanton can at least be a fourth or fifth starter, and he can do it this year when we desperately need one.Outman was a pretty high ranking lefty prospect. 23 yr old left that has had more Ks than IP throughout his minor league career. Rotowold take:
Left-hander Josh Outman was picked up by the A's in the Joe Blanton trade.
Outman, 23, was moved to the pen after opening the season with a 3.16 ERA and a 32/15 K/BB ratio in 25 2/3 innings for Double-A Reading. He had since amassed a 3.22 ERA in 44 2/3 innings. The A's figure to move him back to the rotation and could call him up in August or September. Walks are always going to be a problem for him, but he has enough stuff to make it as a fourth or fifth starter anyway.
He doesn't seem to be much of a 4th/5th this year...We already know that Blanton can at least be a fourth or fifth starter, and he can do it this year when we desperately need one.Outman was a pretty high ranking lefty prospect. 23 yr old left that has had more Ks than IP throughout his minor league career. Here's my problem, I'm thinkin we need at least a number 3, if not a number 2, which we agree Blanton is not. I'm pretty sure BB didn't have to say a word, except for the names he wanted in return.Billy Beane shows us once again that he may just be the greatest GM in the game. Arguably the best 2B in the minors right now + a high K lefty hurler for at best a mediocre #3 starter? I wonder what he said to Gillick to get him to bite, probably used a "Cardenas will never sniff the major league club given what's in front of him" and "that guy walks a batter every other inning" and "you really need another pitcher for a playoff push" sort of angle, to that I say well done! Blanton may help them just a little bit in getting to the playoffs but I would be very surprised if he helps them at all once October rolls around. He's just not that good.
He's great. He trades away his ML proven talent for boatloads of raw talent, develops the raw talents and trades it away. In the meantime the A's continue to tread water year after year in a mediocre division. Bravo Billy! If I were still an A's fan I'd be tired of this cycle. I hope he plans on ringing up a few in a row.Why is he the best GM again?I'm pretty sure BB didn't have to say a word, except for the names he wanted in return.Billy Beane shows us once again that he may just be the greatest GM in the game. An average #5 starter for 2 of your top 5 prospects. Swell. Did Gillick think he was bidding on Harden?
Just read he will be the guy to be called up and added him to my deep mixed league, leaving him alone in my 7 keeper though as I doubt he'd be a keeper option come season's end in that shallow of a keeper. Is anyone else picking up Gio Gonzalez, the most likely replacement for Blanton in the A's rotation?
Before this season the A's had won between 87 and 103 games in every season since 1999 (four division titles if memory serves), not long after Beane had arrived and on a very small payroll. With that sort of success I think saying the A's "tread water year after year" couldn't be less true. He's great. Gillick was able to get this team from perpetually "almost there" into the playoffs. From what I've read Cardenas is regarded as the Phillies' #2 prospect and Outman the #4, so I'm going to disagree with you.None of these players are even ranked in the Top 10 of the Phillies prospects.

This is the same GM who, at the time he dealt Abreau, said we were a couple years away from winning anything. We almost made the playoffs that year after he said that then made the playoffs the following year. But my true problem is with the country club ownership group, if they were more concerned about winning than the team budget we could've had AJ instead of Blanton for this kind of package.Gillick was able to get this team from perpetually "almost there" into the playoffs. Playing to contend three years from now might play well in the sticks but in real baseball cities it's a joke. Like I said before, Haren, Harden,Blanton and Duchenererererer would have been a pretty darn good rotation. He could have contended with them for the next couple of years.
