Social media is destroying this country (1 Viewer)

People are destroying the country - social media is simply amplifying their message.
I agree, but I do have to blame the technology a little more. We've always had differences of opinion, but when we have the ability to have a "national conversation" - every single day, on every single issue - it results in a lot of discourse and negativity. Add in that most people are significantly more snarky/confrontational online, and you have a general negativity that sets in.

Add one more thing to this too: the absolute destruction/irrelevance of facts. The "Fake News" thing is very real, but it's not the NYT/BBC/etc - it's the "Patriots Unite" or "I Love Being Liberal" Facebook groups. We've always had periods of national division, but I don't think it's ever been this bad, because there are no clear lines (like North/South in the Civil War). I don't know what the answer is or how to combat this (and maybe you can't), but I see it very clearly.

Look at it this way - think of how unproductive work meetings are (and the more people you add to the meeting, the more unproductive it is). Now imagine a company having an ongoing meeting with everyone involved, that never ends. That's what social media has become.
