I realize most people won't care, but last night was our town Little League All Star game.

To explain the process, each team chooses their own all stars, no matter what position they play. Then they combine the players from all the National League team and all the American League teams. Basically, you get who you get, so one team could have 6 shortstops and the other 6 first basemen. Sadly, one team ended up without anyone who was a catcher. That might be a tip off as to where this thread is going.

The American League team rolled out their ace pitcher, who throws hard, is a little wild, and likes to throw the ball low or in the dirst. At one point, he struck out six batters in a row . . . IN THE SAME INNING. The catcher had great difficulty holding on to third strikes, the ball would get away, and the batter would make it to first safely. In the strangest inning I have ever seen, the pitcher had 9 strikeouts in the inning but allowed 7 runs on no hits. He gave up a walk and only one kid hit a fair ball, which unfortunately got booted.

Doesn't seem like the catcher should have been an All Star.
The catcher could easily have been an all star at third base . . . or pitcher . . . or outfield. The team didn't end up with anyone that had ever played catcher before, so some one had to suit up and try it. Kind of trial by fire having to wear a mask, use a catcher's mitt instead of your own glove, and sit in a crouch with the ball coming in and short hopping you.

Well then that is a big oversight by the people who selected the team. Even having light hitting catchers is fine on all-star teams, my Godson catches in High School and he can hit a ton. But he's a better defensive player than he is a hitter, and I think that has to be a consideration for all-star teams. Catcher and SS, all the other positions can have good bats and so so fielding and be fine.

Maybe I was not clear enough. Each individual team in the league picks their own all stars. Then all those kids go on a league team. They don't check to see who got picked on the other teams. So all the teams in the American League did not pick a catcher as an all star.

Oh. I just overlooked that part because I don't understand why anyone would ever do it that way.
