Wife, friend and his wife decided to do Paris and French Riviera in a summer or 2. Going to do June to avoid the madness. Thinking Nice but worried it might be too over the top. Anyone ever been to Menton, Toulon or Sainte Maxime?
Was in France over New Years for a wedding. We took a train from Paris to Marseilles, then took the train along the coast from Marseilles to Toulon, where the wedding was. Wow, that is some beautiful country. Mountains on one side and amazing coastline on the other. We were in Toulon for just a couple days, but the people, culture, scenery were all just fantastic.
I'm looking to do a summer beach deal so obviously you didn't see that. Sounds like you really enjoyed everything you did see. Thanks!
While we might hit the beach on our trip, it's not a necessary part of it. If it was like you are planning, I think I'd look to smaller towns too. Nice seems like it'll be a madhouse. Probably worth a day trip.

Nice was deserted in June while I was there. It never got the least bit crowded until August when all the Brits showed up.

Does anyone have a International Driving Permit? Is it at all necessary?
hell no
:lmao:

ok...thx! I saw it mentioned in a few places. I've driven a lot in Europe and UK and never even heard of it before.
Just an FYI, check with your insurance company on that... I have had some experience involving accidents driving in Europe, and that would be the only reason for me to have it. Depending on where you drive, local police sometimes default blame on the international party, and having the IDL could be a requirement for the insurance company to repay any fines.

In smaller towns it could also be a benefit to have a license with multiple languages, but I have never seen the need as most understand English anyway.

I definitely want to avoid the Brits. There are so many places in Southern France that look nice. The whole Provence region looks amazing as well. We don't want to pack too much in and we want a reasonably relaxing trip. However, it's hard to pin down where to go outside of Paris.

Not needed. Picked up my rent a car at the Toulouse airport, exact same process as here in the states.
Agreed, it's definitely not needed. I would still check with insurance company. I had some use of it when involved in a fender bender on the autobahn some years ago. You probably want to get contact numbers and other info from the insurance company anyway, so it's a 5 second question, just to make sure.

Strasbourg. Lived there for a while in my 20s. Awesome place, different than much of France due to German influence.

Not exactly in the south though. Very nice, and the route du vin though Alsace is worthwhile

Yeah Strasburg is as far from Nice as you can get. I was just there. It is awesome, but it's totally different.

Planning a couple of day trips from Aix.

St. Remy and Avignon seems doable for one day.

It seems like Arles, Nimes and a stop at Pont du Gard might be a bit too much on another day? Pont du Gard is a must for me, I love aqueducts. Arles has a lead over Nimes because I love Van Gogh and think it would be cool to just hang out where he hung out for a while. Can we fit in Nimes and still be back in Aix in the early evening?

Also, any opinions of any of the following towns for a lunch stop during our drive from Paris to Lyon and Lyon to Aix. Maybe an hour or so to stroll around:

Orange, Carpentras, Auxerre, Dijon?

We're gonna kind of wing it on those drives but these seem like convenient stops along the way.

Avignon is a lot in itself, the town and the castle. The Pont is awesome.

Catch a bullfight in Arles if you can - it's in a real Roman amphitheatre. Van Gogh's cafe at night is there, you will walk right onto it without realizing it. There is also good paella in those parts. And excellent caves (wine cellars) with excellent wine you can take you in flasks. Had a great time there.

Oranges and Carpentras are medieval, but might remind you a little of Aix, just hillier. The Roman ruins in Orange are cool but maybe outside of town.

The roads are great, sunflowers, vinyards, roadside cafes, beautiful skies, great stuff.

Thx! It's not happening when we're there but I have no interest in seeing a bullfight. To me it should be banned. I'm thinking just a brief stop at St. Remy and spending the rest of the day in Avignon.

Dijon is meh. Spent a couple weeks there. Beaune on the other hand is pretty cool.

ETA: Maybe consider Blois? Gorgeous area.

Thanks but that's way out of the way. This is just for a lunch spot from Paris to Lyon. Beaune looks really nice though.

Beaune is beautiful. So much good wine and cool places to see in the area. The midevil hospital there is interesting. I got way hammered more times than I care to admit when I was in Beaune.

Any more info on these caves? Are they in every city? How do you find them?

Really diggin' what I see from Beaune though. Makes for a quicker stop than Dijon and is on the Route des Grands Crue, which I'm really looking forward to.

Beaune is awesome. Great wine as has been mentioned (my personal favorite Bourgogne (red) is Nuit St. George, a very small town enroute to Dijon, for White I prefer Mersault which is another quaint little town in the surrounding area).

For me would definitely not just be a day trip

I'm not even talking day trip. It's just a lunch stop for the drive between Paris and Lyon. Walk around for an hour or so before hitting the road again.

You might have to ask around for the caves, typically not hard to find in the town you're in.

Here's one in Beaune, seems fairly large actually. You ought to see the front on Google maps, doesn't look like much up front but IMO that's good. The wine guys in these places are pretty experienced, they know some things, the knowledge goes back, they will let you try things. I can't say I'm an oenophile so what do I know about quality but I know what I like, and the good ones seemed to be in the old part of town and not particularly touristy. This seems to fit, but like I said ask the locals.

regarding an IDP, it is not necessary to rent a car in a foreign country, but if you can't produce it when stopped, you will be subject to ticket. it is 15- and good for 1 year from issuance. bring 2 passport photos to AAA. we were stopped randomly in italy at a checkpoint and the carabinieri asked for my patente (license). the translation allows them to understand I am legal to operate the vehicle via the Geneva convention I believe.

loved avignon, beaune, arles, le beaux.....

great appreciation for alsace.

i am not sure how much time i would devote to lyon, BUT.... it is considered the food captial of france. that compels me to at least explore it a little.

Flying out tomorrow. Weather looks good throughout.

Hopefully our plane doesn't get hit by a solar flare...or ISIS.

I'm assuming it's worth the extra bucks to get lounge chairs at one of the beach clubs in Nice. Looked through the restaurants on tripadvisor and looks like it would be tough to find a bad spot. Looking forward to some late night Socca. Au Revoir! Keep the threads to a minimum while I'm gone...tia.

Thx!

We haven't been away from home this long (10 days) in quite a while. I'm a little uneasy for some weird reason. I don't think that's ever happened before a trip before. That's usually my wife. lol

Maybe all the 9/11 stuff the past few days.

NY to Paris isn't on anyone's radar, right?

Great trip!

From Paris, stopped for lunch at Auxerre and after driving through Chablis (most grapes already picked) and Burgundy we stopped for a bite to eat in Beaune before getting in to Lyon around 10pm. Really liked Lyon, so many great looking places to eat, we didn't have a bad meal. Great walking city.

Stopped for lunch in Carpentras before getting to Aix en Provence. Wife booked an incredible room in a beautiful hotel. Check out the room's patio. Aix was much bigger than expected, we did a day trip to Arles and that was more what I thought Aix would be. Great food but I would have preferred staying in Arles. Unfortunately, didn't get to Avignon and also Pont du Gard. Really wanted to see that but decided not to rush things and spend the day in Aix. Got to see Cezanne's studio and the Chagall museum. Chagall really must have been on serious drugs.

Lunch in Saint Tropez, different than expected, and a drive through Cannes to get to Nice. Lots of traffic. Decided not to do a day trip back to Cannes. Not impressed with Nice, should have done as others suggested and made it a day trip. Did have a great view from the hotel though! Good food was a little hard to find, so many touristy places. Day trip to Monaco, with a stop for breakfast in St. Jean Cap Ferrat (should have stayed there...beautiful!) and drive through Villefrance. Incredible area. Stopped on the way back up to hilltop town of Eza. Amazing views and cute little town.

Overall, lots of fun but not as scenic and impressive as driving through Tuscany and some of the smaller cities in Italy. Even Sanremo and some of the other Italian Rivera towns looked nicer. It was a bit ambitious and kinda rushed. Didn't get to soak things in as much as I would have liked. Definitely could have cut down our stay in Nice as some suggested. The Promenade saves the city, imo. Keeps the crowds away a bit.

I did pretty good with the language and almost all the people we met were friendly with not much of the dreaded French arrogance.

Thanks for the help in this thread. I should have asked more questions before finalizing plans but the opinions were appreciated.

Great updates. Love it. I still haven't decided where to go in Southern France, but my French is coming a long well. J'ai peut-être plus de vin s'il vous plaît ?

lol...your French is more advanced than what I was looking to do. I would just point at the glasses and say "deux, s'il vous plait" I wasn't looking to have conversations, just be cordial and be able to read a menu and order food or drinks. I found that many people actually wanted to speak English if they knew how. We did run into plenty in the smaller towns that spoke no English though.

I'll be glad to help when your plans start coming together.

*tip: when you ask for 2, use your thumb and index finger. They start counting with the thumb.

Yeah the thumb deal is pretty common in Europe. I'm actually trying to learn French, been at it for about 3 months. I spend about 30 minutes everyday. Duolingo is an amazing app. I also found some French girl on Hello Talk app that is trying to learn English. I work in a high school so I talk with the French teacher regularly.

All you really need to know is j'aime une baguette avec du buerre et du vin rouge.
