Speed Kills... (1 Viewer)

Based on watching them this year, Wallace and D Jackson are faster than Johnson

Wallace...

At the NFL Scouting Combine, Wallace finished second overall in the 40-yard dash with an official 4.33-second time. This was the second fastest wide receiver time

Plz close thread.....

And Desean Jackson ran a 4.35.I don't really care about 40 times, i want to see these guys race over 100 yards or meters.

I wish they still did the nfls fastest man competition...
america would much rather watch that than the probowl
I know i would. I think they should bring back the old skills competition. With the fastest man, all the quarterback drills, the bench press for the olineman/dlineman...I always found that pretty cool and enjoyable to watch. The pro bowl is just a joke.
Used to watch those every year, too. WAY more enjoyable than the Pro Bowl.Ah, the good ol' days...

In pads with a defensive player trying to cover them as well.Changes the whole equation.

I

i wish there were more contests in the skills competition that feature trickery and gadget plays like the trick shot competition in the NHL because it would be awesome to see things like trick throws trick snaps trick field goals and stuff like that and then people would care a lot more about the NFL and it would probably not go on lockout strike because demand would be so high so technically trickery would save the NFL and our FF seasons next year.

To me, a 40 yard dash means nothing unless they are suited up.

I want to see game speed. Suit up, then run. I don't want to see guys in shorts and tees running with track shoes.

Didn't Desean beat Johnson in a footrace; albeit a televised-and-probably-not-running-like-they-mean-it race? For my money, I don't think there is anyone faster or more dangerous in open field than Desean Jackson. Says the Eagles homer.

I'm not a Philly fan or homer, but I agree with this. In pads, DJax seems faster than others.

Isn't DHB supposed to be right up there with these guys? I mean in speed, not at, you know, catching a ball or anything important like that.

I'd say that the ten fastest guys in the league are probably in no particular orderFordJohnsonHeyward BeyWallace JacksonCharlesSpiller McfaddenTedd Ginn JrMichael Bennett (althought he is older now)I'm not really sure where the defensive guys would fit in, i know Deangelo Hall and Fabian Washington were touted for there speed coming out of the draft. Don't really know many defensive guys.Edit: After looking at the names I listed including the defensive guys, it looks like the Raiders had almost of all of these names at one point or another.

Good list. As a testament to how fast Desean is, look no further than the first play of the first Eagles-Washington game where he blew the doors off of Hall and Landry (who I believe is pretty fast in his own right). Dude made them look silly.

hester? i dont think he's old enough to have lost a step yet

Chris Johnson seems insulted by Mike Wallace claiming he is fastest player in NFL.

Well then Derrick Locke will hurt both of their egos once the combine takes place.
We'll see. It's not like Locke will be the only track guy to participate at the combine. Heck 60 meter ncaa champion jacoby ford couldn't beat that 4.24 that Chris Johnson ran. 100meter champion Trendan Holliday couldn't either.I personally don't like the 40 time as the be all end all when it comes to speed. The 100 meters is still the truest test of speed imo.

So i guess i just answered my own question, Holliday is the fastest player in the league out of pads, i'm not sure about in pads.

In pads it's propably Ford.

I just can't believe anyone was able to figure out WTF he was talking about.

mike wallace on.jim rome sayin he the fastests in the nfl[i retired from race talk dey can have dat until they run 4.24 or under

I don't disagree. This pre-combine talk and the little pride back N forth that players show is about all I find entertaining about 40 times. Locke's been timed at 4.21 and can run a good time in the 100 meter. (He was originally signed to Kentucky to run track not for football.) Well, anyway it'd be nice if some radio host brings up guys like Locke (I'm sure there's plenty of other fast guys) to Wallace and CJ. Even Deion seems to be prideful about the time so his comments might be fun too.

Everyone sleeps on Steeler CB IKE TAYLOR for 2 reasons... he wasnt invited to the combine, and he drops lots of interceptions.

His sprint coach Tim Shaw says that Taylor's the fastest football player he's ever coached.

That wouldn't mean that much if you didn't know that Shaw has also coached Deion Sanders and Titans' running back Chris Johnson. (You can see him say it on video after the jump.)

Holliday was like a world class sprinter and i don't think he broke 4.3the 40 and speed don't kill. but i'd bet the 3cone drill has much higher kill rate.

FWIW, I recall a story that Taylor told SI once upon a time. He said when he was in HS his uncle would have him chase, and attempt to catch, rabbits as part of his training. He never got one, but "came close." :excited: He said it helped him really develop an explosive first step.(Of course, that uncle is also the guy who had him catching bricks to help "strengthen his hands." I think he may have broke somethin' though. You can catch a brick, but can't catch a football? Awesome.)

Jerry Rice used to do this too. Seemed to work out alright for him. :hot:

You're going the opposite way. I'd rather see a 5-10 yard burst while already moving at a slow pace. Or if that's too difficult, then a 15 yard run. These types of distances are far more important than a 40 yard dash, and a 100 yard/meter run is completely worthless. The track and field guys don't run full speed for a 100 meter dash. They have their build up, plateau, etc. It doesn't measure much relavent to football in my opinion. A 15 yard burst? You are running full speed the entire way, and that's what's important to a football player. In these distances, I've never seen anyone faster than Vick in his prime. He looked like he was moving against people in slow motion over small distances, like beating a LB to the edge when he has the angle, etc.

Fastest 40 yard dash times at the combine since 1999...

The Raiders drafted almost half of them.
WOW! If they are electronically timed, that's pretty insane. 4.24 is really insane. The fastest guys in the history of the game have to be Vick in his prime and/or Deon Sanders in his prime. Just from watching games, those guys seemed the fastest in short distances. Not sure what their official times were.

 look at the angle antrel rolle takes at the 1:00 mark. Oh and if you'd like to save your ears... mute the song.
ALSO at the 1:00 minute mark. You see Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie "catching" Chris Johnson from behind. The guy has the 4rth fastest 40-Time in league history; yet not ONE mention in this thread besides the one by me.EDIT:

Considering the fact that the play starts at the 20-Yard line.

Rodgers-Cromartie is playing on the right side of the field.

Chris Johnson's run goes towards the left.

It was an 80-Yard run and Rodgers-Cromartie catches Johnson.

It speaks to Cromartie's speed.

Watch it again.. DRC tries to take the angle and CJ still beats him there which is why he's behind him. Then he let's up at about the 10 when he knows he's going to get 6.

Too bad he completely disappears in some games ..... such as the Fantasy Super Bowl Week 16.... :wall:

point from wiki:

The origin of timing football players for 40 yards comes from the average distance of a punt and the time it takes to reach that distance. Punts average around 40 yards in distance, and the hangtime (time of flight) averages approximately 4.5 seconds. Therefore, if a coach knows that a player runs 40 yards in 4.5 seconds, he will be able to leave the line of scrimmage when a punt is kicked, and reach at the point where the ball comes down just as it arrives.

True, but seriously, point to a WR that doesn't poo the bed from time to time. Besides, when he disappears, Maclin usually has a huge game, so he is still having a big impact drawing coverage.

Yeah, the only episode I ever watched of Shaq VS. featured a relay race. Shaq's celebrity team was competing with another celebrity team captained by Tyson Gay. DJax and CJ ran against each other in the 2nd leg. Djax got the better of him.
