SSL1 - Draft thread (1 Viewer)

Have to go to jury duty again tomorrow morning AND go to the office first to get all the guys lined out before I go.

Sent PM to Reaper with my last pick. Enjoyed drafting with you all and look forward to a good run this fall!

18.15 WR Devin Hester - Chicago

Complete shot in the dark here, but the guy is a playmaker and may explode for a couple games, which works for this format.

God my QB sucks, but I just don't see anything worthwhile as a QB3 out there.

PM going out to Twilight for the final pick.

Interesting....5 teams with one kicker.
Not the best move IMO, true some of the K's available are ???? but 11 of us will have advantages over the others in some weeks.
I've gone solo kicker in past SSL's, think when I won it all I only had 1. That said, it's only a solid move if there is more than a flyer type available at a position where you're weak and need to shore things up.For example, my QB position this year... going solo at K was a consideration IF there was a QB worthy of shoring things up, but IMO, the QB's were all backups and mere gambles to start due to injuries or performance (I waited too long for !B2, but thems the breaks). In the end, I decided a flyer QB won't be as valuable as the 2nd K which gives me a 2nd chance at decent K points each week.

In 18 rounds it is tough, and two years ago I won Capt. Hook's QSL with just one K. But it was Vanderjagt on the Colts. I would only consider it if, - they were elite K's with elite O's in dome/good weather teams. i.e. - Vinateri ( and an early Bye, helps too)In 18 rounders I noramlly go 2qb/4rb/6wr/2 each of TE/K/D, but if you try to get a WR7, so you need to short TE or K, and cause I had Gates I chose 2 K

I will almost always draft only one kicker in this format.

If I have done well enough at the other positions, then it should not hurt too much. After all we are just trying to survive, not lead the league in points, although it's nice.

An early bye week is a must though IMO if you are going to do that.

Mare was gonna be my pick, but he got scooped a few picks in front of me.

Ended up with Longwell. I'm not all that excited about the Viking offense, but he is steady, and his week 5 Bye is a plus.

I agree with the others in that you can go with 1 kicker if you need to shore up other areas. I think this is the one position where it hurt the least. I won SSL2 last year with only Reed. I was wondering if there was more of a trend starting to happen with teams only going with 1 kicker...or if this was just an anamoly and teams just felt the need to draft for depth at other positions.

What I find strange is that due to the injury factor, it seems smarter to short DEF than K to me. An entire DEF will never be hurt and miss a game, while a K could get hurt and miss some games or be less effective in some games, like Akers was a couple of years ago. And look at how Vanderjagt crashed and burned. I'd grab BAL or CHI and just ride with them if I was going to short a position.

I used to subscribe to that same theory, the defense couldn't get hurt, so if you could just get by that one bye week..... I checked out the scoring though. The defenses, both good and bad score wildly fluctuates. When you have two of them, you capitalize on the ability to hit more often and especially in this format, miss less. Kickers overall score both less and with less fluctuation, in my opinion, than the defenses. Check out Twilight's league set-up and historical scoring.

Good post. I was thinking that scoring had something to do with it, but I didn't know it was that clear. Thanks.
