The wife and I are going on a trip to St. Augustine on the 29th. We will be staying for 3 days. Anything fun to do there? Or any suggestions on things to do. Thanks for any responses.

Lived there for 4 years and was down again back in May. It's an awesome place. Will jump in here tomorrow to chat. Hotdogcollars lived there for 20 I think.

Good list. ghost tours were lame but was kind of fun since I was buzzed up. I remember eating at some place that was in an old boat or ship and you could feed the birsds that flew up to the window. I was also drunk at that time. Some of the bars had a NOLA vibe to them I remember. Also remember a big water wheel and a bar that didnt have electricity in the old timey area.

You have a hotel yet? Stayed at the Casa Monica - beautiful hotel.

Ended up hanging out with the road crew of a band playing locally which led to us hanging with the band themselves. At the close of the bar wife and I were invited to hang on the bands bus which was a blast.

So, if you see B-Real of Cypress Hill, say hello for me.

Lol. Will do. We are staying at a Bed and Breakfast on the beach.

Thanks. It's funny you say avoid the ghost tours, we just booked one last night. It was cheap though, only like 16 bucks.

They aren't horrible. They give a good history of the place.

What is wrong with the Sunset Grille? Went there a couple weeks ago, only because it was next door to the hotel we were staying at. Good food, friendly staff, kinda cheesy, but I think that is what they are shooting for.

The alligator farm is pretty neat too, and now they have ziplines set up throughout the park, day or night. However you will probably need reservations ahead of time. Well worth it.

IIRC, the town goes to sleep VERY early. Only a few options to drink etc after 11 and I believe only one goes until closing time - I'll need to ask my wife for the name - was a divy place but cool. Had some live music too.

Most beautiful area is Matanzas Inlet a few miles south of town. Gorgeous beach area and very private where the intercoastal connects to the ocean. My favorite spot in all of NE Florida

I wouldn't say avoid those. They aren't terrible. Just touristy type stuff.

Yeah, a lot of places close up early, but not all and if there is business many will stay open. Stogies, St. George Tavern and Tradewinds should all be open until last call seven nights a week. Like I said, Stogies is where you want to go. Great beer/wine/cigars, great atmosphere, great music. Have yet to meet anybody who didn't love it. Tradewinds is a tourist joint mostly, where there is a confederate flag on the wall and the banter of the house band guy runs along those lines. He's an old redneck who is a racist ########. But it's a place people seem to like to hit when visiting. St. George Tavern is strictly locals and the place gets very loud and messy drunk. If you're there over the holiday break, I wouldn't worry about places closing up early. There should be a lot of people out and about.

I'm not as familiar with the beach scene, which tends to lean way too dudebrah for my tastes.

Just walking around town at night this time of year is great, as they're in the middle of Nights of Lights. In fact, if you're staying at the beach I'd have the cab drop you off on the island side of the bridge and walk over. It's pretty cool.

My favorite beach in the area is down at Crescent Beach, near the Matanzas Inlet.

Casa Monica-only the best for fbgs

I for one, like Sunset Grille, then a walk on the beach.

Another good restaurant in town is Columbia. We have been there for lunch a couple of times but it sounds like the dinner wait is long.

My avoid list centers around Ripley's - total tourist trap.

If you're into golf history, World Golf Center is not far away. WGC has the hall of fame and Caddyshack restaurant but not a lot else there.

If you were staying an extra day or two, the Gator Bowl is on the 2nd.

If you're into Craft beer, there is A1A ale house but also several breweries up I-95 in Jacksonville. Not sure how many of the brewery tap rooms are open Mon-Wed though. Looks like Aardwolf is open Wed but not sure you want to be driving 45 mins back on NYE,

Second the Alligator Farm recommendations and, of course, the Fort.

There used to be more little fun things to do but a lot of "The Oldest ___" things have been grouped together.

Hatties is a #### show at night. That's where a lot of the young (read: underage) beach crowd hang out. Think vomit in the bathrooms and airheads walking around with test tubes full of liquid sugar. The others are just average food, imo, not the kind of experience a FBG on vacation should be subjected to. A1A's beer is terrible, imo. I never once finished one of their beers. I kept trying but continued to be disappointed. Stogies and Rendezvous have the best beer selection downtown, but you don't want to go to Rendezvous. Stogies will have 100+ bottled beers, 10 on tap (including Guinness with nitrogen oxide mix, as it should be), probably 20-30 wines, and a walk-in humidor. Outdoor seating with heat lamps across the street from the Fort. Also a very cool upstairs that resembles an old clubhouse. I'm not kidding, this is one of the best bars in the country. It and it's crowd when I first visited played a large part in persuading me to move there. YOu might end up there on a ghost tour, depending on which you are doing. There are people who seriously believe the house is haunted and it's been profiled on a couple ghost tv shows. I know a regular there would refused to sit at one end of the bar because she said there were children playing on the floor there. Heh.

If you want fried shrimp, O'Steens is as good as any you are likely to ever have. That's just across the bridge on the island. Walkable to town via the bridge.

And yeah, Cap's is cool. Way over-priced for average food, imo, but the patio and view are top notch. I used to watch football there on Sundays. Great for sitting outside on the water watching games while pounding beer and oysters.

St. Augustine isn't just the coolest spot in Florida, but one of the best bang for you buck destinations there is. And Frontier flies directly into town now, removing the 45-60 minute drive and the need for a rental car if you don't feel like dealing with one.

lived there for ~10 years...only felt like 20, Flap. Actually that's not fair, i did like it, just a little slow and far from family for me. A lot of great ideas and reviews in here already, so here's my :2cents:

Food - Overall a really great little foodie town

  • Top Pick = Cannot go wrong with Casa Maya no matter your budget
  • High End = Collage...by a lot
  • Happy Hour = Pizzalleys actually has a really fun happy hour...go see Larry at the bar (if he's still there) and tell him the dog collar guy sent you
  • Vegetarian = Present Moment Cafe - hipster central but a fun crowd and good food. Jacksons garage acroiss the street was fun too
  • Completely Unique = Kings Bistro - No idea what he has turned this place into now as he had big plans before i left in 2012. But the food was good..the chef used to cook in the white house
  • Wings = Hurricane Grill - regional chain but good wings and great beach vibe
  • Dessert = The Hyppo - Popsicles!
  • Touristy = Columbia, i guess you have to go there if it's your first visit. Then you can check it off and likely never go back
  • Views = Caps, as others have said food is ok and overpriced but love sitting out on the deck
  • Avoid = Bistro DeLeon used to be excellent but has gone down hill a LOT based on my recent visits
Stuff To Do

  • Castillo de San Marcos - lil bit of history and a quick tour
  • Lighthouse -again, a quick trip and a nice view of the area
  • World Golf Village & Hall of Fame - If golf is your thing
  • A1A Alehouse bar if they have some live music playing
  • Golf - St Johns CC OR St Johns County Course - The county course was where i lived, not luxurious but good group of people working there, tell Wes the dog collar guy says hi
  • Ponte Vedra, Jax Beach, Neptune Beach, Atlantic Beach - About 45 min drive north, but worth spending a day/night up there if you have a D/D
  • Never really did the ghost tour, ripleys or other pure tourist stuff
That's pretty much it...the town is basically good for golf, the beach, food, and a happy hour or early night hangout

gtfo, had no idea but love hearing that. And yes it makes it SO much easier than driving in from JAX or Orlando
