Star Blazers Live Action Movie Trailer (1 Viewer)

Most of us were drawn to Star Blazers as a kid. For me it was my first introduction to story telling on TV that used an arc format. That is something to this day I still love.

Most will have fond memories of Season One (Quest for Iscandar) and Season 2 (Comet Empire).

Not many have good or even any memories of Season 3 (Bolar Wars). I never saw it myself but have read that it was a complete train wreck. They did not use the fabulous voice actors from season 1 and season 2 and instead replaced them with the Speed Racer voice actors.

My big hope is that the new Comet Empire season currently in production will continue to be popular enough to help them remake the Bolar Wars season.

@NewlyRetired and @GregR:

I was just telling my son about this, and we watched the first 5 minutes of the original 1970s version on YouTube last night.  It was great, but he thought the animation was a little cheezy.  I really want to watch the reboot with him!

Do either of you have suggestions for watching the show?  Should we go back and watch the original first, or just skip right to the reboot?  If we do the reboot, do you have suggestions for how/where to get it? (I don't even really know what it's called, it's so unclear).  I don't mind paying big money to just order it from Amazon (look at me!).

Or should we do the live action movie first, and then the series?

Any suggestions welcome (from anyone) welcome.  Help me Obi Wan, you're my only hope!

I loved the original series but even on DVD the quality is gone.  The 70's version was never remastered.

One thing to note, the new series is not in English.  You have to watch with sub titles.

If that is not an issue to either you or son, I would highly recommend jumping straight to the new series and or the live action movie (the live action movie and tv series are not related outside of telling the same story.

Why don't you and your son start with the movie and see how you like it.  It will give him a feel for watching with subtitles and you will learn all the important characters in case you want to start the animated series.

I torrented the movie and tv series but I think both are available on Amazon.  Greg might know more as I think he looked into buying them.

Also, the new animated TV series is on Crunchy Roll (if you have a roku like device you could watch there, the subscription fee is very small).

 @Sweet J

the name of the movie is

Space Battleship Yamato

the name of the first new series is (the second season is in production right now).

Space Battleship Yamato 2199

@Sweet J

The live movie blu ray is about $15, or you can watch it on Amazon Video for even less.  It has English dubbed voices too, so if you think subtitles might be an issue for your son, that would be the safest.  It isn't exactly the same story, but a lot of the trip is the same or similar.

It's also way cheaper than buying the series, which only has subtitles for English, so I'd probably start there if you're purchasing it.

Thanks guys.  My son is 17, and doesn't mind subtitles at all (he's burning through a lot of anime on Netflix at the moment, which is what made me think of this).

I'll look at both the movie and the updated series.

awesome!  Then always do subtitles if you get the chance.

I talked to my daughter and she said she is almost positive you can watch 2199 for free on Crunchy Roll is you don't mind commercials.

Let us know if and what you watch.

Found this on Amazon.   Looks like they are releasing a blu ray / DVD combo of the first season. It is listed as having both English subtitles and dubbing.  The stuff online just has subtitles.

Part 1 drops July 31 for $50.  It's 325 minutes, which at 25 minutes an episode would be 13 episodes, which would be half of the 2199 season.

Haven't seen a release date for Part 2.

Best Buy preorder has it for $47

This is an absolutely phenomenal remake of the 70's version.

Make sure you get season 2 as well (Yamato 2202).

A 3rd season has been green lit and will start releasing next year entitled Yamato 2205.

New set of episodes, based off a previous movie! Sequel to season 2 / 2202.

Space Battleship Yamato 2205: A New Voyage (Uchū Senkan Yamato Ni-ni-zero-go Aratanaru Tabidachi), also known as Star Blazers 2205, is a Japanese military science fiction animated film duology produced by Satelight and Staple Entertainment. It is the sequel to Star Blazers: Space Battleship Yamato 2202 and a remake to the 1979 film Space Battleship Yamato: The New Voyage, originally based on the Space Battleship Yamato television series.

If anyone is struggling to find it, hit me in PMs.

Apparently 2 movies split into episodes 1-4 and episodes 5-8.

I grabbed these episodes a while ago but I have not watched yet. When I first got these, I had assumed this was the remade Bolar Wars season (Starblazers Season 3 from when we were kids), but in reading the description I don't think it is.

The movie titles were apparently Takeoff, and Stasha.

I'm going to have to rewatch season 2. It's not as good as the first season in my mind, and not sure if I even finished it. But I want to go through it for the full context before watching the new ones.

I had the same impression. I think my expectation was too high for the second season because the Comet Empire was sooooo good in Star Blazers. I did not think the remake was as good (where as the season 1 remake was extremely good imo)

Binged half of season 2 last night, wasn't paying close attention once it got into the repetitive dialogue parts from the Gatlanteans.

I have half a mind to do a video editing project and vastly reduce how much it's discussed. Really if they'd translated it differently it would be better. "We're synthesized beings who have removed the weaker emotions" would have worked. Just being so utterly focused on Love specifically just doesn't work in English like it might in Japanese, I don't know. Anyway was thinking one could just cut out most of the times they talk about it, only leave enough to give the basic idea of their motivations.

I just don't know that I want to put the time into it to do it though.
