I am doing my first dynasty league with IDPs and I am curious when in the draft people like to start targeting defensive players and maybe some specific players people like. We are doing 28 man rosters with a 5 player practice squad. Starting lineup is QB/RB/RB/WR/WR/WR/TE/Flex (TE/WR/RB)/DL/DL/LB/LB/DB/DB. Thanks!

If I can't get Luck or Gronk then pick Watt and put idps on ignore until halfway through. Dl is thin and getting thinner so don't wait too long for number two and three, maybe four too but you don't have much bench space. For lb Jean's tiers would be a good reference point but in the end I want three before getting to the redraft watch list tier. Unless scoring dictates otherwise I try to avoid pass rushing lbs. How many of Jean's redraft watch list i add depends how many I have when I get there, but with this bench I'd guess two, three tops. Unless you have an int heavy scoring system I'd put db on ignore until the end then pick two, shallow bench so I wouldn't bother with a backup. This is the last part of my team I try to develop, if at all. Just plug and play based on usage and matchups.

Wait, then wait longer. Use the resources here at FBG to grab bargains late rather than spending early picks on IDPs.

If you aren't required to draft DBs and you have a waiver period before the season starts, you might just skip them. If not, treat them as kickers.

Agree with waiting since you have more offensive starters required than IDPs, but it does depend a lot on scoring. If you get, say, more than 3 points for sacks/INTs and/or count TDs from your IDPs, you would do very well to grab Watt In an early round (maybe fourth or so, depending on what offensive players are available). If there are no elite QB/RB/WR on the board then, I'd definitely grab Watt. There are plenty of LBs and DBs to go around, since you only start 2 each. Quality DLs, as MAC said above, do tend to be more scarce, so I'd look to those first when you do start selecting DLs, but I'd probably fill out my starting offensive positions, and maybe even a couple of backups, before jumping over to IDPs.

As for bench, I'd probably get one quality backup (keeping an eye on bye weeks) for DL, LB and DB. Fill the rest of your bench with solid offensive backups.
