Been dabbling in art for a while and now have some extra time on my hands these days with all the working from home/quarantine...so planning to start up a little side hustle.

My mom recently went through a home remodel and she commissioned me to do a piece for her.  Many visitors ask about it and lightly inquiring if I could make something for them in specific sizes and color schemes, etc.

Thinking of creating an Etsy store and wondering if any FBG's (or FBGals) have done something like this?   If yes, please share any advice/learnings that was successful or to avoid.

Really cool work, depending on price I'm sure you'd get a lot of attention.

Appreciate it.  Just edited post with a link to a different piece which portrays a different vibe, size, etc.  

What I'd like to do with the store is show these examples and create a new piece for each request based on the customer's feedback.  So, in essence, each one of a kind and personalized.

I won't be able to pump them out at a rapid pace (nor do I want to be stressed out by it).

Material cost will be about $50-$75 so will need to figure out markup from there.

ETA: also have to think about max size I'm willing to do....have no idea how I'd realistically ship that 2nd piece above due to size.

FBG rapidfireweasel (not sure of spelling or spaces) is an artist, and IIRC, art teacher... might be a good guy to start with.

a lot of the work I've done in recent years involves clients who are collectors or art consultants (ie: wives of financial sector husbands who studied art history in college and are bored)... as well as two of my recent bosses, who will buy and sell art to our clients. This is the higher end of things, and it's about taste-makers (my bosses, or the art-consultants) dictating what's "worthwhile" to collect. obviously a TON of money out there for art. obviously a 1 in a million chance of tapping into that world. and that mostly relies on establishing the brand and having those contacts as much or more than the actual art (which of course is always in the eye of the beholder).

but you're a style-conscious dude, and the art looks good, so it might just be about putting it out there for a bit via Etsy (I'd think this is not a place that will push price-tags ultimately, but might a good place to get the feet wet) while pushing your online presence IG, etc. And ideally you shmooze at some shows to meet the gallerists and clients and wow them with your style- without a background, that's what they'll be buying into at first. doing this will also give you a sense of what's selling and in trend... shouldn't be the bottom line of why you're making this art, and you definitely don't want to be following trends with what you're doing... but right now I'd say those two pieces you've linked look nice, but don't really differentiate from a lot of what's out there.

Thanks for taking the time to write out thoughts, and all great ones!  Really appreciate it.  

I do actually know @rabidfireweasel well... have fantasy history with him, FB friends, etc. I’m not at his level of artist whatsoever and never really plan to be. I’m a DIY’er hobbyist who just likes to play around with mediums and textures...no formal art training of schooling at all.  

So just dipping my toe in now and thought Etsy would be a  good way to spend some of my free time to evolve my :style:, and just take the pride in knowing something I created is hanging on a wall proudly somewhere. If I make a few extra bucks,  than bonus!

First commissioned piece completed!  Ended up being a friend of a friend of a friend who grew up in Milwaukee but moved to California years ago  She requested the Milwaukee skyline be featured...I didn’t want it to be the typical skyline you alway see, so put my spin on it  Now I can put this on my Etsy page and do any major city skyline in a similar style, with custom requested colors, etc   Was a fun one and happy with how it turned out.

Only critique I can think of is the Z instead of S thing in the name drives me nuts... but that's my problem not yours :lol:
