Steelers: In addition to their 6 Lombardi trophies (1 Viewer)

Steeler

I don't know if this deserves it's own thread or not, but I thought it was interesting that the Steelers have lost in the playoffs to the eventual Superbowl champs 7 times... including once in the SB and 5 more times in the AFCC game. I was also wondering if any other teams had so many "close calls" be using this criteria.

1995 Lost to Dallas (Super Bowl)

1972 Lost to Miami (AFCC game)

1976 Lost to Oakland (AFCC game)

1997 Lost to Denver (AFCC game)

2001 Lost to NE (AFCC game)

2004 Lost to NE (AFCC game)

1983 Lost to Oakland (First Round)

Note: I compiled these numbers myself using a couple web sites, so I might have missed some occassions :goodposting:

I see where you are going here but I defeintely wouldn't consider 1983 a year to brag about. That was the year of Stiff Cloudt and if hadn't been for Bradshaw coming in for a half to save the season we wouldn't have made the playoffs. Also a lot of people consider a team that gets close but doesn't win championship & Super Bowl games to be chokers.

Well, Denver, Minnesota, and Buffalo all have at least 4 following your criteria, I would start there if you are curious enough.Check that, Denver has at least 5, they lost to the Steelers in the 2005?? AFCC

how does this help my fantasy team?..

I agree with both of your points. And I'm not saying this is a good way to measure the success of a franchise, just wanted to share this way to look at playoff resutls to see where the thread might go.

That shows the respect that the Steelers should get as a franchise.

I would look at Dallas, SF, and Denver for the next best bets.....

Dallas has won 5 superbowls and lost 3.

They have lost 6 NFC championship games.....so there number is 14 (edit...check that...i didn't check to see how many of those NFC championship teams won the superbowl). It will be lower because at least 1 of those was to the Eagles in 81 who lost to the raiders.

They should've beat Pitt in one of those superbowls if that clown TE Smith didnt drop that TD pass right in his hands. :lmao:

Dallas should have one more loss if O'Donnell doesn't become color blind

7x for Denver:1977: Denver lost in SB to Dallas1978: Denver lost in playoffs to Pittsburgh1986: Denver lost in SB to Giants1987: Denver lost in SB to Washington1989: Denver lost in SB to SF2000: Denver lost in playoffs to Baltimore2005: Denver lost in playoffs to Pittsburgh

Just looking at Minny here... they seem to have a lot. 4 Super Bowl losses. Lost to Saints last year. Lost to Rams in 1999. 49ers in 1988 and 1989. Redskins in 1987. List goes on, but I stopped caring.

Dallas was never behind in that game, Pitt was lucky to even be within 10 of dallas...

Also a lot of people consider a team that gets close but doesn't win championship & Super Bowl games to be chokers.
I don't see how this label could possibly apply to a franchise that has won 6 Lombardis, no matter how many times they fell short.

I don't think anyone would label the Steelers franchise as chokers but one could certainly argue that a Steelers team in a particular season choked.
