This is not the Steelers' all-time team, it's the all-time team and a half. They should've limited it to 22 players plus the two specialists.

so just how bad were the steelers in their first 40 years of existance? I see like 2 players that were not on the great 1970's team or this current cowher era team.

They were pretty bad. Don't you ever watch NFL films? They were dreadful prior to 1969.Best story though, is how during WWII the Steelers were merged with the Eagles to become the "Steagles". Classic!

They do, when it's in contrast with all the Superbowls the Steelers have won. Not too many films about San Diego, though...

They were prety bad, but the other factor is the effect of fan voting. There aren't many people voting over the internet who even know there was a Steeler team before the '70's, let alone name any of those players.

Personally, I'd not put on the list Lloyd, Porter or Hampton. I think all three were overrated, especially Lloyd. I thought Levon Kirkland was much more effective and consistent a LB than Lloyd or Porter.

Not that I would take Bradshaw off or anything crazy like that, but if you look at all of the Steelers records for passing, rushing, and receiving, Kordell Stewart has to be taken into consideration. I didn't really like him being the Steelers QB over the years but suprisingly, he was pretty productive. Give me Ben anyday, but I'd put a special spot on this team for Kordell. I know Mr. Bill Cowher always had a special place in his heart for him.

Yeah, when they did the Eagles' voting (we also turned 75 this year), the picks were heavy on the Reid era and the Buddy Ryan era, because that's what people who would vote on the Internet remember. Vermeil-era players were underrepresented, and pre-Vermeil players were almost nonexistent, except for obvious HOFers like Chuck Bednarik and Tommy McDonald.

You're kidding, right ? Why do you think the Steelers run D has been so go for so many years ? If anything, Hampton is underrated...Lloyd and Porter played with a nastiness that was loved by the fans, they were the heart of the defenses when they played, I have no problem with either of them making the team.

Captain Kirk is a glaring miss, and so is John Jackson....

So they have two centers and one guard? Four OLB's and one MLB?

This isnt really an all time team - its just a list of their great players.

I was watching Savran on Sportsbeat the other day and he was talking to 1 of the guys who lead this idea.He said to make it easier on fans and just to pick the best/most popular players, positions like OL, LB, and DB etc. were considered as a whole and specifics didnt matter, just 5 OL, 3-4LBs, 4 DBs.As for the 33, someone said it earlier that since the team started in 1933 they did that, and chose the 9 guys with the next highest vote amounts. I got no problem with this since theyve had so many great players and teams. As for omissions and questionable picks, I agree with above poster that John Henry Johnson should have been on it, probably over Bleier. I have no problem with Porter, Troy, or Hampton. Porter is very high on the all-time sack list for the Steelers and had been the heart of the defense for 8 years or so, not to mention an instrumental part of the super bowl run. Most of the same can be said of Hampton, though he gets less press. Troy I think is the most questionable since hes only been around for 5 years, but he's a multiple time pro bowler and All-Pro and I think by the time his careers done he isn't questionable for this team, plus hes a fan favoriteI realize you only get 1 QB, but I might of put Roethlisberger on there as one of the other 9. Guy already has a super bowl ring and Im guessing by the time his careers done, he's got a good shot at owning all the passing records for the Steelers. But the team is for everything up to now I guess, so who knows about that

I know Hampton takes up space in the middle as a nose tackle but I rarely see him make big plays (i.e. sacks or tackles for loss yardage, disruptions in the backfield etc). I guess if your job is to stand up, grab the center and a guard so your LB's can dart through the middle of the line then Hampton is your guy. I just rarely see him make any plays thats all.

Nosetackles in a 3-4 rarely make big plays. Trust me, Hampton is a fantastic player. Fans tend to vote for the Pro Bowl by stats, which Hampton never has...yet he makes the Pro Bowl a lot. That says that coaches and players who really know what's going on know how good he is.

Hampton is easily worthy of being on the list. I think he'd have started next to Joe Greene if he played in the 70's

Parker was a big part of a Superbowl winning team and by the end of the season will have reached Rocky Bleiers CAREER rushing totals, as will only be about halfway behind by his recieving numbers, in 4 years rather than the 7 it took Bleier. Also, note that the year Bleier was the main ballcarrier (1976) the Steelers went one and done in the playoffs.

This is the 3-4, that is his job, he is not asked to get up the field to the QB like a 4-3 DT. If the Steelers had a crappy NT the would get run all over, and that is exactly why he is underrated. Dude is a stud, period

:lmao: You're comparing apples to oranges. Just as you point out, Bleier was NOT the primary ball carrier most of his career. He was a fullback, and his role was primarily blocking, with rushing as a secondary role. I'm a huge Parker fan, by the way, and I'm not saying one can't make an argument that Parker perhaps belongs on the all-time team ... but to compare Parker's rushing totals to Bleier's and conclude that Parker belongs on the all-time team as much or more than Bleier on that basis is just silly.

I think Hampton is terrific too, but I do have to say that when he went down in 2004 and journeyman Hoke took his place, they still went 15-1 and shut down the run...maybe Hoke is really good, too?

Journeyman? He's in his 4th year in the league, all with the Steelers.

You're right, I meant that he is a career backup. My bad. The point is, when he's come in for Hampton, there doesn't seem to be too much of a loss there.

Hoke WAS really good that year. I remember the coaches in 2004 complementing him on how big he stepped it up week after week.

Parker has started for 2 years? Blier was on 4 SB teams, starting in the backfield. Blier is a historic figure around WPA, the movie, the injury in the war, Penn St guy, etc. I am not bashing parker, I like him a lot, but over Blier? No.

Porter shocked me, but in the 3-4, I'd take Lloyd and Porter in their prime any day.

Casey Hampton is sooo underrated, yet he is the key piece to the Steeler run defense, which never gives up 100 yards to a RB.

I hope I'm around for the 100 year team, Ben over Terry, Rey Maleuga(USC) over Porter or Lloyd, Holmes over Hines????

Yes, I predict the Steelers draft Rey M. from USC this year coming up. THey need a new MLB, Rey is a bad man, bad man.

The rest of the draft will be dedicated to OL and DL.

Offense sells tickets, defense wins games, OLine wins championships!!!

Carnell lake is one of my al ltime favorite Steelers because he brought 100% every game. It was a lot of fun watching him and Woodson back there!

I must have a bad memory because I dont remember Tunch Ilkin being all that good.

Hampton missed alot of time when Steelers went 15-1 and Hampton was out during the Seahawks game...1st shutout by the Steelers in many years. Just my opinion (minority obviously) but Hampton is overrated.
