I've found that if you can get a proven stud for a first rounder, you do it.  How many times have you gone back and looked at a rookie draft after the season and been disappointed at how many didn't perform to expectations?  You're rarely disappointed with the proven star.

I agree with this.  I seem to value picks much less than the average dynasty player and it has helped me make some nice deals.  Since most people view draft picks so highly I get perceived added value from my side because i don't have the picks as highly regarded.  Just like you said, picks for the most part are a crap shoot.  Getting  a known performer has much more value to me.

(Pre-apology for long, off-main-topic word-vomit.)

Yeah, I can see both sides of it really. I've definitely had my share of duds and studs from drafts. To me draft picks are so exciting because the sky's the limit and if they're a superstar you're getting years and years of production. Also I just like the idea of having a roster full of players that I hand-picked. But excitement and personal sentiment really doesn't matter: it's all about the production you actually end up with. And I'm still having trouble determining just how much value to place on those picks.

I drafted Kenneth Dixon and Laquon Treadwell with very high picks a few years ago. But then I picked up rookie Chris Godwin after moving a guy to an IR slot immediately after our draft. I drafted DJ Moore with the 2.01; then drafted AJ Brown with the 3.04 (yes, "three".04) the next year, then CeeDee Lamb with the 1.12. So far those are all looking great (Lamb not proven yet). But yeah. All those picks required luck to turn out well. And the Godwin thing is really more of an argument against draft picks. WAS RB's have not treated me well: Matt Jones, Rob Kelley, Samaje Perine. Thank God I couldn't get Guice. Drafted Royce Freeman with the 1.02. Somebody picked Lindsay with the literal last pick of the draft (40-50th). Jamaal Williams. Kerryon Johnson looked okay, but fortunately I got Swift now. Hopeful about Zack Moss.

Basically I guess I totally agree, you're more likely to get production from a solid veteran.
