I think Anderson's an intriguing prospect, especially for dynasty leagues. He wasn't a major producer in college as,
per his NFL Draft Profile page, "Was able to get open for potential big plays, but quarterback Jared Goff didn't see him.
Used as field stretcher for underneath work by other targets."
However,
he's a very good athlete when compared to other TEs, though he lacks the bulk of an inline blocker. It doesn't really surprise me that he found his way to Houston as O'Brien has been looking for a receiving TE for years. However, Anderson's not nearly the blocker that Fiedorowicz is - Fiedorowicz is a much more complete TE.
Interestingly enough, I kinda wondered what Anderson would look like as a big slot receiver or a joker TE. He was seen in his draft class as a man lacking a position -- too big and slow to win out wide; too small to be an effective enough blocker. Does the new wave of move TEs and big slots make him more relevant though?
Well ... Jordan Reed is an interesting comp in my book. Same height;
Reed had a whopping 6 lbs on Anderson as a prospect.
Anderson was a little quicker, and tested very well:
40-Time: 4.65 and 4.63 for Anderson (
from his pro day) to Reed's 4.72 at the combine (Reed didn't work out at his pro day or complete a full workout at the combine)
Vertical: 38" at the Combine
Broad: 119" at the Combine
3-Cone: 6.95 at his pro day
Short Shuttle: 4.13 at his pro day
Those times and jumps are what net an 85th percentile burst score and a 94th percentile agility score.
As for his production this past Sunday, bear in mind that Houston was grasping at straws for receiving options. Fuller was out; Bruce Ellington pulled his hamstring on his first and only reception. Fiedorowicz had another concussion (which he may be done for the year now). Andre Ellington was playing some receiver for them, despite being with the team a total of 10 or 12 days or whatever.
I would bet Anderson ran a lot of routes from the slot as Houston just didn't have anyone else. They were using Hopkins, Braxton Miller, Ellington, Anderson as their receivers.
ALL THAT to say that Anderson has some legit upside. Some of his catches looked really, really smooth, and I'd bet Houston's been quietly developing him over the past 2 seasons. He may have had a bigger role this year all along, but he too had injuries to start the year (Concussion in week 1 and a hamstring injury in week 3). Interesting play this week if Fuller and Ellington and Fiedorowicz are out, and an interesting guy in dynasty regardless.
