Stephen Anderson - TE - HOU (1 Viewer)

So with Ertz hurt, need a TE for the playoffs. Didn't see a thread on Anderson.

12 targets out of nowhere last week. 5/79/1. Anything to see here?

As an Ertz owner, I'd say yes.

If Fuller is out, he's probably the #2 target. Good matchup this week as well.

I think Anderson's an intriguing prospect, especially for dynasty leagues.  He wasn't a major producer in college as, per his NFL Draft Profile page, "Was able to get open for potential big plays, but quarterback Jared Goff didn't see him. Used as field stretcher for underneath work by other targets."

However, he's a very good athlete when compared to other TEs, though he lacks the bulk of an inline blocker.  It doesn't really surprise me that he found his way to Houston as O'Brien has been looking for a receiving TE for years.  However, Anderson's not nearly the blocker that Fiedorowicz is - Fiedorowicz is a much more complete TE.

Interestingly enough, I kinda wondered what Anderson would look like as a big slot receiver or a joker TE.  He was seen in his draft class as a man lacking a position -- too big and slow to win out wide; too small to be an effective enough blocker.  Does the new wave of move TEs and big slots make him more relevant though?

Well ... Jordan Reed is an interesting comp in my book.  Same height; Reed had a whopping 6 lbs on Anderson as a prospect.

Anderson was a little quicker, and tested very well:
40-Time: 4.65 and 4.63 for Anderson (from his pro day) to Reed's 4.72 at the combine (Reed didn't work out at his pro day or complete a full workout at the combine)
Vertical: 38" at the Combine
Broad: 119" at the Combine
3-Cone: 6.95 at his pro day
Short Shuttle: 4.13 at his pro day

Those times and jumps are what net an 85th percentile burst score and a 94th percentile agility score.

As for his production this past Sunday, bear in mind that Houston was grasping at straws for receiving options.  Fuller was out; Bruce Ellington pulled his hamstring on his first and only reception.  Fiedorowicz had another concussion (which he may be done for the year now).  Andre Ellington was playing some receiver for them, despite being with the team a total of 10 or 12 days or whatever.

I would bet Anderson ran a lot of routes from the slot as Houston just didn't have anyone else.  They were using Hopkins, Braxton Miller, Ellington, Anderson as their receivers.

ALL THAT to say that Anderson has some legit upside.  Some of his catches looked really, really smooth, and I'd bet Houston's been quietly developing him over the past 2 seasons.  He may have had a bigger role this year all along, but he too had injuries to start the year (Concussion in week 1 and a hamstring injury in week 3).  Interesting play this week if Fuller and Ellington and Fiedorowicz are out, and an interesting guy in dynasty regardless.

For any Ertz owner, I'd look at his own team and Trey Burton too.

I didn't realize this, but Miller left the game after the Texans opening possession of the 2nd half due to a concussion.  So they were literally down to Hopkins, Anderson, and Andre Ellington running pass routes.  And some guy named Chris Thompson (rookie WR from Florida).

Didn't know this guy existed until 10 minutes ago when read about him in FBG dynasty article. Was looking for reasonable claim for dynasty playoff run and he seems like a good option as emergency TE2 give Kittle and Shaheen aren't legit 2017 backups.

If anything I'll at least screw the Ertz owner. ?

I’m all in. Then again Kroft is my other choice who they used all game as a full back or blocked in general against the Steelers.

Well Anderson is going to be a plug and play for a lot of owners this week. I have him in on one league. Hell of a thing in the opening round of the playoffs. I think the danger of chasing points is great here. Then again Anderson appears to be a stretch TE, with no competition now in a TE heavy offense (in terms of snaps & use, maybe not targets), injury issues at WR, and a good matchup. It could be all about Hopkins & Anderson.

Doesn't matter if Fuller plays in this analysis as he's basically a deep threat anyway.

Was going Doyle all week and now unsure. TD props have Anderson +145 to score, Doyle +230. I don't see any yardage props anywhere. Legitimately torn. Damn you Gronk!

Every target from last week:

Looks decent. Certainly getting a lot of volume. For dynasty, are we thinking he can supplant CJ next year? I'm all for buying shares of a future Watson target.
Thanks for this. Wow I counted 4 red zone targets and 3 end zone targets. He made a couple really tough grabs and also dropped a couple catchable ones. Savage really didn't have a lot of zip on his throws, allowing the DBs to close and break up a couple throws.

Haven't seen a ton of Fuller but he seems like an outside field stretcher to me. Hopefully his speed helps keep the safeties out of the middle of the field.
